Made in America Act
Legislation aimed at encouraging consumers to buy American-made products and creating incentives for manufacturers to increase domestic production has been introduced in the US.
The Made in America Act proposes a voluntary labeling program that would allow consumers to easily identify the extent to which products are American-made.
Called America Star, the initiative would require the Secretary of Commerce to set the standards that a product needs to meet in order to carry the label.
It would also need input from the Federal Trade Commission to ensure consistency, especially the extent to which products are made in the US.
"Americans know the phrase 'Made in America' carries a meaning of quality and craftsmanship - this bill helps consumers easily identify when they're buying American," said Congressman Mike Fitzpatrick, who introduced the bill in the House last week.
"By connecting American consumers to American manufacturers like never before, we can bring more good paying manufacturing jobs back to the US."
He points out that companies with US manufacturing facilities have already started to tag their products as American-made - and that this legislation standardizes the identification process.

Turkey's Minimum Wage
          Up by 4.4%
Turkey has increased its minimum wage by 4.4%, effective in July, with the hourly rate rising to EUR2.10 (US$2.7).
"Despite its relatively high labor costs, Turkey remains the European Union's (EU) second biggest supplier of textiles and third for garments," Jean-François Limantour, president of the Cercle Euro-méditerranéen des Dirigeants Textile-Habillement (CEDITH) and a market analyst, said.
"Its competitiveness in the sector is down to a number of factors - the size of firms, local production capability, vertical integration, competent management, creativity, dynamic commercial services and a very favorable customs procedures with the EU," he added.
However, he underlined that Turkey had lost its place as the second biggest clothing supplier to the EU (behind China), last year, having been overtaken by Bangladesh.

Consumer Confidence Reaches Three-Year High
             in UK
UK consumer confidence has reached its highest point since April 2010, an early sign that the economic recovery is gaining steam.
The GfK Consumer Confidence Index increased to -16, from -21 in June. The survey found that measures for personal financial situation improved for both the last 12 months and the coming year, as did the general economic situation.
The major purchase index was the only measure to decrease this month.
"There is now no doubt that consumer confidence has recovered strongly from the unparalleled trough of the last five years," said GfK managing director of social research Nick Moon.
"At -16, the overall Index is now at its highest point since April 2010. In the last three months the Index has risen by 11 points, one of the best single quarter improvements since the Index started climbing up from its all-time low of -39 in July 2008 after the credit crunch."
He added that it was also significant that since December last year, there has been only one month where the Index fell, and that was just a one point drop.
"With a series like the Index it is the longer-term changes that mean far more than one single month's figures, and the current trend is definitely upwards," noted Moon.
"This can be seen clearly from the 12-month moving average which started the year at -29, rose to -28 by February, to -27 by May, -26 in June and it is now at -25. Given that the 12-month moving average was either -29 or -30 for the whole of 2012 this is a very dramatic change." he added.

Première Vision buys Eurovet Fashion Shows
Trade show organizer Première Vision SA is expanding its portfolio by buying five of the fashion fairs that are currently staged by Eurovet.
The two companies say the move will allow them to strengthen and develop the full potential of the shows involved, including international expansion, as well as benefiting from synergies with Première Vision's portfolio.
Trade fairs involved in the deal are the manufacturing shows Fatex, Zoom by Fatex, and Made in France by Fatex, as well as Tissu Premier and Collections which are dedicated to fabrics.
The move means Première Vision increases its portfolio of fashion industry trade shows from 24 to 32 operations per year in six countries.
Events include its existing businesses in yarns and fibers (Expofil), fabrics (Première Vision), textile designs (Indigo) and accessories (Modamont).
With Zoom by Fatex, Première Vision also enhances the shows that make up Première Vision Pluriel, the major international event dedicated to fabrics and services for the fashion industry - showcasing nearly 2,000 exhibitors to 60,000 trade visitors from 100 countries in February and September at the Parc d'Expositions de Paris-Nord Villepinte.
The shows that are being purchased will continue to be run by their current teams, and brought into PV Manufacturing, under the management of the Première Vision board of directors.

Hanesbrands Acquires
      Maidenform
Hanesbrands is to acquire rival intimate apparel maker Maidenform Brands for US$575m, as it looks to drive growth and create increased scale to serve retailers.
"This business is a natural fit into our core business and meets all of our acquisition criteria," said Hanesbrands chairman and CEO Richard Noll.
The agreement, which is subject to Maidenform shareholder approval, regulatory approval and other customary closing conditions, is expected to close in the fourth quarter of 2013. The transaction has been approved by the boards of both companies.
Maidenform, which sells intimate apparel bras, shapewear and panties under brands including Flexees, Lilyette, Self Expressions and Sweet Nothings, as well as Donna Karan and DKNY under license, sources all of its products from third-party manufacturers.
The group said 57% of its revenue last year was generated by bra sales and 35% by shapewear sales. Approximately 90% of sales were in the US.
The basic apparel maker's brands include Playtex, Bali and Just My Size, as well as Hanes, Barely There, Wonderbra, Champion and L'eggs, and Donna Karan and DKNY under license. It has company-owned global manufacturing supplemented by third-party manufacturing.
Hanesbrands said it expects to leverage its low-cost supply chain to maximise the value of Maidenform to retailers and consumers.
The all-cash transaction is expected to be accretive to earnings per share in the first 12 months after closing and is projected to deliver full benefits within three years of more than $500m in incremental annual sales.
After the transaction closes, HanesBrands' pro forma projected annual revenue would be more than $5bn.
