American Apparel Ads
             Banned
American Apparel has been banned from running a series of ads that the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) for "gratuitous nudity".
The ASA described the ads as "exploitative" and were "likely to cause serious or widespread offence". It covered a series of eight ads featured on American Apparel's website and one in lifestyle magazine Crack.
The ads featured young women exposing their buttocks and breasts.

"We concluded that the gratuitous nudity [in five ads] in combination with the sexualized nature of the poses, and the sexually provocative pose [in two ads] meant the ads were exploitative and inappropriately sexualized young women," the ASA said.
The retailer likened the images to pictures shared among friends on social networks. The retailer said it believed it was "important to judge what was and was not offensive by reference to the current times and the views of the majority of decent and reasonable people, not a small and puritanically-minded minority".
It emphasized that the images in its "advertising were less, and certainly no more, sexual in nature than a large proportion of the images of other companies".
The company recently said that full-year losses narrowed to US $39.3m from $86.3m in the prior year.

EU & Vietnam in Trade
              Talks
The EU and Vietnam have moved closer towards talks on a free trade agreement after the scope of the negotiations was agreed at a meeting between the two countries last week.
EU Trade Commissioner Karel De Gucht, and Vietnamese Minister for Industry and Trade, Vu Huy Hoang, have set out the framework for the discussion, which will help the EU forge stronger trade and business links with one of South East Asia's fast-growing economies.
"The EU is committed to increasing its engagement with dynamic Asian emerging markets to boost trade and growth," said Commissioner De Gucht.
Areas to be covered include the elimination of import tariffs, trade in services, non-tariff barriers to trade, and the trade aspects of rules relating to intellectual property and competition.
The Commission must now consult with Member States before the EU and Vietnam launch the negotiations.
Vietnam would be the third partner of the EU in the ASEAN region, after Singapore and Malaysia, with whom it has started negotiations on a free trade agreement.
In 2011, EU-Vietnam trade in goods was worth over EUR18bn, with almost EUR13bn in exports from Vietnam to the EU.
Vietnam's key export items include footwear, textiles and clothing.

India Releases 1.9m Bales
    of Cotton for Export
The Indian government is allowing the shipment of another 1.9m bales of cotton after reviewing applications that had already been registered before it introduced a ban on raw cotton exports last month.
Up to April 12, the registration certificates of around 1m bales had been revalidated for export, with another 0.9m bales due to be cleared by April 17, at the latest.
India, the world's second largest producer of cotton, accounting for around 22% of global output, introduced a surprise ban on raw cotton exports on 5 March.
This was followed by a partial U-turn a week later to allow the shipment of pending orders. Initial priority was given to cotton that had been pending for export into Bangladesh, Myanmar, Pakistan, Nepal and Bhutan. The next priority was given to cotton that had been handed over to customs.
The government said exports of the 1.9m bales "would give a fresh impetus to cotton prices and would benefit both farmers and exporters."
However, no plans have so far been made to release new export registration certificates to allow further cotton exports.
Unconfirmed reports say ministers have decided not to allow fresh exports in the 2011-12 marketing year, which ends in September, to ensure adequate domestic supplies. But this could depend on the latest production figures, which are due to be reviewed next week.

     Labor Rights Activist
           Murdered
Labor rights organizations are calling for a full investigation after an activist and former apparel worker was found tortured and killed outside Dhaka.
Aminul Islam, who worked for labor rights organization The Bangladeshi Center for Worker Solidarity (BCWS), had been arrested on at least two occasions in the past two years on suspicion of fomenting worker unrest in Bangladesh’s textile and apparel manufacturing sector.
Labor rights groups in Bangladesh and the US, including the International Labor Rights Forum and the Worker Rights Consortium, are calling for those responsible to be brought to justice, claiming that Islam’s torture and death were linked to his labor rights work.
Islam vanished last week when he went to meet a worker who had called asking for help, and his “brutally tortured” body was found dumped by a roadside outside Dhaka on Thursday.
Police initially buried his body, but it was exhumed and reburied in his home village after family members recognized it from newspaper photographs.
Labor rights groups in the US said the BCWS had been harassed by the Bangladeshi government and apparel factory owners for the past two years, including the arrest of Islam and two of his colleagues, and the revoking of the organization's license to operate.
They quoted Levi Strauss & Co as calling BCWS “a globally respected labor rights organization that has played a vital role in documenting and working to remedy labor violations in the apparel industry in Bangladesh”.

      EU Launches SPRING
The European Union (EU) has launched a new program in Pakistan to support the development of a sustainable cotton supply chain from the farm to final product - including links with leading retailers and brands.
The four-year scheme - which is called SPRING (sustainable cotton production in Pakistan ginning SMEs) is being funded under the regional Switch Asia initiative, and will be implemented by WWF-Pakistan.
With cotton ginning SMEs in Pakistan one of its main areas of focus, the project hopes to show ginners the importance of sustainable cotton production, develop links to farmers and producers of better cotton, and encourage the uptake of more efficient and sustainable practices.
There are also plans to develop links with leading EU cotton retailers and brands through the support of key stakeholders such as the Pakistan Cotton Ginners Association (PCGA), Small & Medium Enterprises Development Authority (SMEDA), Pakistan Cotton Standards Association (PCSI), National Textile University (NTU) and Cleaner Production Institute (CPI).
"I am glad to see Pakistan benefiting from the European Union Switch Asia regional initiative," said Pierre Mayaudon, EU acting ambassador to Pakistan.
"Given the importance of cotton in the agriculture and industry of Pakistan, not to mention its overall cultural impact, [there is] no doubt that this new program has the potential to positively influence the livelihood of Pakistani farmers and families."
The project is "vital in improving the environmental and process efficiency of the ginning sector," added Aman Ullah Qureshi, chairman of the Pakistan Ginners Association.
