The Dream Guy Behind
the "New " Dreamgirl
Everyone is talking about Christopher Scharff…young , energetic, ambitious, smart, and determined to take his newly acquired company to great heights. For the record Christopher purchased 100% of ‘Lovin’ Enterprises dba Dreamgirl from industry veteran Pat Fischer in May 2003. Pat, a terrific lady and good friend of mine, founded the company in 1978.
Since announcing the acquisition Christopher has aggressively been expanding domestic and international distribution while he tours around the country meeting his customers and getting feedback on their expectations of new designs, price and general customer service. A pretty sharp move for this soft spoken young man. Taking his designers (one is
new and just out of Otis Design School) to meet the customers and to the Lingerie Show in Lyon, France is a savvy move in attaining his ultimate goals. And, in another positive move, Pat Fischer is staying on as President to work side by side with Christopher to add her sage advise.
(Below Right: Customer service and Quality control is tops)
A little about Christopher- who is a senior level international executive with a solid track record of business success. Early in his career after receiving both his undergraduate and Master’s in Business from U.C.Berkeley he was admitted to the Business Honor Society and Beta Gamma Signa. A recipient of the Earl F. Cheit Outstanding Teaching Award, he was named outstanding graduate student instructor by the Academic Senate. His B.A. was in Economics with Phi Beta Kappa honors. He’s fluent in French, English and German. Very impressive!
(Below: Sample makers working on next years styles)
His career has spanned from several positions at Lanz, Inc. a US Sleepwear and dress manufacturer, to a position at St. John’s Knits as V.P. International. Christopher managed all international sales, marketing and operational functions and tripled St. John international sales in three years working throughout the European community, NAFTA, the Middle East, Asia, and Japan and licensed
the St. John brand name to
top international licensees.
He credits much of his learning experience to Bob Gray the co-founder of St. John and considers him one of his most important mentors.
Christopher has spent time with the Movado Group, manufacturers of fine Swiss watches, jewelry and accessories as well as V.P. for BCBG Max Azria International Group, a leading manufacturer and retailer of woman’s contemporary designer apparel and accessories. There he managed all distributors, wholesale sales, strategic planning, and operations. The company has sales of approximately $250 million a year.
With many more credits to his name
(too many to list here) Christopher is up to the challenge of our "Intimate" industry and looks forward to meeting his new colleagues as well as customers. He’s a real team player and everyone who has met him finds this young man charming, interesting, and eager to expand his company.
(Left: New Embroidered Bikini)
I enjoyed a lovely lunch with him this summer and was surprised at the schedule he manages to keep
(he had just taken a plane in from Kansas City that morning).
He has a lovely wife Andrea, a landscape designer, and a two year old son Henry.
In his spare time he is an avid traveler, runner, skier, sailor, and ocean swimmer. WOW! I’m out of breath.

For the Militant Feminist: A Bra Gun Holster
Keep your hands off, fellas! This brassiere is loaded! Paxton Quigley, a Beverly Hills expert in female self-defense, offers a bra designed to hold a .38-caliber revolver and pepper spray. It's the very latest in tough-girl chic, designed "for the comfort and ease" it provides gun-toting gals. Quigley says the chest is actually a good place to conceal a weapon. She describes her underwear as "equal parts Victoria's Secret and Guns & Ammo magazine." (Suggested Celebrity Endorsement: Angelina

Bookstore Bans Vice
While most adversaries of VICE, the down-and-dirty youth culture magazine,
regard it as nothing more than a toilet read,
best left in the bathroom or not picked up
at all, one deeply offended man has
chosen to wage an all out war against the publication.
Danny Gainsburg, co-owner of indie
bookstore "Politics and Prose" in Washington D.C., has not only banned the newly released "VICE Guide to Sex and Drugs and Rock
and Roll" from his store, but has launched
a crusade against Warner Books, the
publishers of the off-color coffee table read that's out this month.
Who's Who?
Donna Karan was born 1949, in Queens, New York. She grew up in Long Island with her step-father who was a tailor and her mother who was a model. Being trained at Parson's School of Design, she entered the
business herself, designing for Anne Klein. Eventually she became head of the Anne Klein design-team and remained in this position until 1984.
In 1985, she left Anne Klein and founded her own company. At first she became known for her line of elastic bodies. Then word spread about her Essentials line, offering seven easy pieces every woman should have in her closet. The Essentials line became a success and the seven pieces were broadened to about 200 pieces today.
The introduction of her DKNY collection in 1988 marks the beginning of a period of amazing growth of the company. Thought of as a bridge collection, DKNY has developed to be the pillar of the Donna Karan business. DKNY is a modern, moderately-priced young collection, drawing from the spirit of big city life.
Donna Karan is known to support the needs of modern women with her clothing. When designing her clothes, Donna Karan claims not have the top model in mind, but women like herself. The saying goes, that before the production of a piece of clothes is approved by Karan, it has to look good on her. It seems, that with Donna Karan clothing, function comes before styling.
Until recently, Donna Karan's husband Stephan Weiss shared responsibilities with his wife at the top of the company. First and foremost, the trained sculpturor Weiss was in charge of Donna Karan cosmetics. But by the end of 1995, Weiss resigned from his duties in order to concentrate more on his art. In mid-1997 Donna Karan herself followed her husband's resignation, backing off from the position as CEO of the company. Donna Karan remains in the company as
chairwoman and designer in charge. John Idol, who used to be with the Polo Ralph Lauren Corporation is now Chief Executive Officer of the company.
Donna Karan Settles Sweatshop Suit
Fashion house Donna Karan International was on Tuesday reported to have agreed to pay more than $500,000 to settle a three-year-old lawsuit brought by garment workers in several Manhattan plants.
Citing a person familiar with the matter, The New York Post said the firm and at least one of the factories it was using - Jen Chu Fashion Corp - was accused of failing to pay minimum wages and withholding more than $1m in overtime pay.
"The case has been resolved to the mutual satisfaction of all parties," a Donna Karan spokeswoman told the paper without disclosing further details of the settlement.
"Ask Andy"
Andy Weinstock has been in the fabric and textile business all his life, but professionally since 1969.
"I love what I do, selling fabrics around the globe. I've met lots of interesting, creative, dynamic
folks; some have become dear friends. I love to help new businesses find the things they need to become successful. It works for everyone."

Hi Andy, I'm a web and home custom corset business. I can't find purple, green, or
lavender cotton backed satin. I buy other colors in small lots (10-15 yards) from Philmar Fabrics in NYC and they are wonderful.
Do you have any sources for me?
Also I'd love to find small minimum brocades in the same colors.
Thanks if you can help, and do visit my active 400-page custom corset

Dear Ann: visit www.fabrics.net

fabric sourcing areas on the web. Good Luck, Andy
Hello Andy! I am a costume maker that is switching from retailing costumes directly to producing mass units to wholesale.
I am in a bind for finding stretch fabrics. Obviously,I need wholesale fabric but I am having difficulty finding companies who will sell to me in the amounts I need(because I am just starting, I typically buy in the 10-50 yard cut per fabric). I have gone through all the fabric a wholesaler out of L.A. offers. Can you direct me to any new suppliers? Also, are there any warehouses I can go to directly to buy unusual spandex and/or stretch meshes?
Thanks for your help! Casi
Dear Casi: visit our sourcing area here at Fabrics.Net. Visit

An
eight-year-old boy went into a grocery store and picked out a large box of laundry detergent. The grocer walked over and asked the boy if he had a lot of laundry to do. "Oh, no laundry," the boy said, "I'm going to wash my dog." "But you shouldn't use this to wash your dog," said the grocer. "It's very powerful and if you wash your dog in this, he'll get sick. In fact, it might even kill him." But the boy was not to be stopped and carried the detergent to the counter and paid for it. A week later, the boy was back in the store to buy some candy. The grocer asked the boy how his dog was doing. "Oh, he died," the boy said. The grocer said he was sorry, but added, "I tried to tell you not to use that detergent on your dog." "Well, the boy replied, "I don't think it was the detergent that killed him." "Oh? What was it then?" "I think it was the spin cycle!"
