Bras looking for a better fit
They're lacy and seductive, fancy or plain, colorful, clingy, stretchy, small, large and made from almost every fabric imaginable. The problem is, many of them just don't fit right.
Bras, a wardrobe essential for nearly every woman in the modern world, are big business. And they've come a long way since the 1960s, when the sultry, bosomy actress Jane Russell touted Playtex's revolutionary "Cross-Your-Heart" technology.
But the majority of women are still strutting around wearing ill-fitting cups, bands that ride up, and straps and underwires that dig in, says bra maker Bali, the brand that introduced "Wonderbra," and is a unit of food and consumer goods maker Sara Lee.
Seven in 10 women in the United States, in fact, are wearing the wrong size bra, according to Bali.
In an effort to correct the situation and boost the bottom line at Sara Lee's Winston-Salem, North Carolina-based intimate apparel unit, Bali in August began sending a team of some 200 bra fitters across the country, armed with tape measures and gentle advice, to help women find the right size and style for them.
"Most of them come in with issues," says fit expert Teresa Wise, of the women who have attended fittings she staffs at department stores in the South for the campaign, "Bali Fits 100,000 Women."
"They're so appreciative to finally get into a bra that feels right," she said. "One lady was so excited that she was in the right size bra, she actually came up to me with this big hug."
Bali has already held more than 100 of its fitting events at retailers ranging from Carson Pirie Scott in Chicago to Burdine's in Florida. Its goal -- within one year -- is to get 100,000 women into the right size bra.
The bra maker claims that a good-fitting bra is critical to a woman's comfort. The average "B" cup woman, for instance, is carrying 5 to 7 pounds in her breasts, while the average "D" cup is toting around 15 to 23 pounds.
BRA TECHNOLOGY SHAPES UP
Chicago-based Sara Lee, which also makes bras under names like Playtex, Hanes Her Way and Just My Size in the United States, and Dim and Unno in Europe, is providing a lot of support for innovation to make bras more comfortable, and to add value that can improve its profit margins.
With nearly one-third of the U.S. market, the company is the largest U.S. bra maker, competing against rivals such as Victoria's Secret and department store brands like Maidenform, Warner and Olga.
"There's nothing more difficult, actually, than making a bra and having a bra fit," says Jennifer Armstrong, who heads marketing for Bali. Getting a new bra from concept to store shelves can often take more than two years, she says.
The conventional bra, made with traditional cut-and-sew method using seams, has more than 20 individual pieces. That's one reason why the hottest technology is for the latest seamless bras, created out of a single, tubular piece of fabric on a circular knitting machine.

    Colombia's InexModa Tradeshow
Following breakfast with Medellin's Mayor Luis Pérez Gutiérrez, Claudia Abuchaibe presented her finely finished and colorful cocktail fashion show.
Others, including Everfit, Pepa Pombo and Bettina Spitz opted instead for 'model performances' inside the InexModa tradeshow.

Everfit produced an over-the-top Broadway-style dance to promote their comfort fabric. Pombo, who designs fabrics specifically for each design, needed no more than a model and booth to capture her audience.
The show began with Beatriz Camacho, who described her collection as "portraying a time when women were more feminine." Flesh-tone silk chiffon separates and dresses of asymmetrical layers and textural scissor cuts, appeared as light as feathers.
Models carried boa clutches and wore jewelry by Venezuelan Lilia Lopez. Said Lopez, "I think my jewelry picks the lady it wants to go with." Neiman Marcus sells her one-of-a-kind designs, and Lopez confided that she has plans to open a store in Miami.
The 'Night Dream' gala followed, signaling the end of ColombiaModa 2002. "It was a beautiful conclusion to the week," said Alicia Mejia, director, ColombiaModa/InexModa.

                           Pay your past bill.
A customer sent an order to a distributor for a large amount of goods totaling a great deal of money.
The distributor noticed that the previous bill hadn't been paid.
The collections manager left a voice-mail for them saying, "We can't ship your new order until you pay for the last one."
The next day the collections manager received a collect phone call, "Please cancel the order. We can't wait that long."

With a total output of 28 million tons, spun yarns satisfy  more than half the needs of the global textile and clothing  industry. Furthermore, the market is growing. Between 2000  and 2010 the demand for spun yarns worldwide is forecast to  rise by almost 25%.

              Artist uncovers Kate Moss
LONDON: This is supermodel Kate Moss in a new pose – pregnant and naked.  Moss is one of the most photographed women in the world but this is the first time her image has been committed to canvas.
Artist Lucian Freud painted Moss, 28, reclining naked, pregnant and voluptuously curved in Naked Portrait 2002.
A notoriously slow worker, Freud was forced to paint to the deadline of Moss's impending delivery. So he tackled her belly first, to fix its form.
Freud has also painted the Queen, but not like this.
Moss follows in the footsteps of Jerry Hall, whom Freud painted naked and pregnant reclining with her youngest son Gabriel.

Judge Rules In Favor Of Topless Beauty
Rebekah Revels, who was dethroned for alleged topless photos.
"When we asked her, she didn't indicate it was against her will at all," Alan Clouse Pageant executive director (CBS)
A North Carolina judge said Wednesday that Rebekah Revels (Photo Right) should be allowed keep her title as Miss North Carolina.
Revels, 24, resigned in July after Miss America officials received an e-mail from her ex-boyfriend, Tosh Welch, saying there were compromising photos of her.   The judge says topless photos of Revels - if they exist - are not a violation of her contract with pageant officials.
Last week, the judge issued a temporary restraining order returning the crown to Revels. His action Wednesday turned that temporary order into a preliminary injunction.

    "Ask Andy"
Andy Weinstock has been in the fabric and textile business all his life, but professionally since 1969.
"I love what I do, selling fabrics around the globe. I've met lots of interesting, creative, dynamic folks; some have become dear friends. I love to help new businesses find the things they need to become successful. It works for everyone."
You can ask Andy questions about Fabrics at
               Andy@mcpetesez.com

Hi Andy,Long Time No See. How are you doing? I was wondering if you knew a resource for bra straps. I need to buy them in relatively small quantities. Do you know anyone who has these? Best Regards Mark
Dear MarK: for small quantities of most any thing sewable, try your local fabric retailer.  They will have a good supply and prices that may meet your needs. Good Luck, Andy

I have been told the best place to get close out fabrics (holograms, etc for dancewear) is LA. Is this true? Jeannine.
Dear Jeannine: closeout fabrics are usually available every place that fabric is sold.  The upcoming fabric show in New York City will have fabric companies from around the world.  You can get information about attending at www.fabricshow.com
.  Ask some of your regular fabric resources if they have some closeouts.  They may not be in the colors or quantities you need, but at least you will establish yourself with these resources.  Good Luck, Andy

                 Want a day off work?
So you want a day off. Let's take a look at what you are asking for. There are 365 days per year available for work. There are 52 weeks per year in which you already have 2 days off per week, leaving 261 days available for work. Since you spend 16 hours each day away fron work, you have used up 170 days, leaving only 91 days available. You spend 30 minutes each day on coffee break which counts for 23 days each year, leaving only 68 days available. With a 1 hour lunch each day, you used up another 46 days, leaving only 22 days available for work. You normally spend 2 days per year on sick leave. This leaves you only 20 days per year available for work. We are off 5 holidays per year, so your available working time is down to 15 days. We generously give 14 days vacation per year which leaves only 1 day available for work and I'll be darned if you are going to take that day off!
