Why You Need Me (Part 1): Not Just a Pretty Face
When faced with a tight budget, many designers may be tempted to cut some corners on their catalogue and advertising shoots by having a friend model their lines, rather than hiring a model. Do not make this mistake! There are many reasons why this is not the best idea; here are the top three.

1. Models know how to model different types of garments.
That may seem simple, but it is true! An experienced, professional model knows how to pose to show off your garment. If you explain your vision to her, she should know what to do with her body and face to make that happen. It truly isn't as simple as it might seem. Take these images for example.

Both images are cute and flirty, but do they show off the garment? No! In the first picture, part of the lace detail on the neckline is completely blocked. In the second picture, the chemise is all wrinkled up, which is not flattering! Unless it is a glamour image (where the focus is supposed to be on the model, not the garment), the most important thing in the photo is the lingerie, and if that doesn't look good, the whole shoot was a waste of time and money. Another challenge in the lingerie industry in particular is the panty shot - you want to show the panty in a tasteful way, and without getting into detail, this can be tricky! Imagine spending the time having someone photograph your collection and having the end result consist of images you can't use. Wouldn't it be better to just pay a professional in the first place?

2. Models can use their faces and bodies to create variety.
Anyone who's watched an episode of America's Next Top Model has heard Tyra, Nigel, or one of the Jays use the terms "commercial" and "high fashion/editorial." What does that mean for your designs? A model knows! A good, professional model can use her face or body to make the same garment look either commercial or editorial. In case you're not sure of the difference, here's a little tutorial. A commercial shoot is exactly what it sounds like - it is to generate commerce. In this industry, it is done with the intention to sell garments. This is an example of a commercial shot:

The emphasis in this image is clearly on the garment, and the goal is to make you want to buy it.

An editorial/high fashion image sells an idea or lifestyle rather than a specific product. It is more about mood, than trying to get you to buy something. It is often characterized by dramatic settings, facial expressions, or poses. Here is an example of the same garment, but modeled in more of an editorial style.

The focus in the image is not the garment, but moreso the feeling the image as a whole evokes. Of course, makeup and hair play a role, but we'll get to that in the next Lipgloss & Lace. ;o)
A professional model should be able to produce high quality editorial images or high quality commercial images - all you have to do is fill her in on your vision!

3. Because she's a professional!
Much like you'd not likely hire a Math teacher to do your accounting, someone with REALLY nice teeth to fix your cavities, or an extremely healthy person to be your doctor, it doesn't make sense to ask your pretty neighbor to model your lingerie. The phase "you get what you pay for" is cliché, yes, but that's because it has been said over and over again... And guess why? Because it's the truth! If you want your catalogues and advertising images to look professional, then you must hire a professional team!

Well, there you have it... I gave you my top three reasons why you should resist the temptation to ask someone pretty you know to model your line... The rest is in your hands!
xoxo,
Mandie

Pretty Polly Unveils New Website
                         by Luis Paredes
British Hosiery-company, Pretty Polly recently unveiled its redesigned website, www.prettypolly.co.uk.

The company also made it’s first U.S. trade show debut at CURVENY in August and had on hand a selection of hosiery and other offerings that have made the company a world-wide success.
Treacle, our contributing writer, wrote about one these offerings, the new Diffusion Line “which combines the best of their fashion-forward Henry Holland tights with classic, timeless nylon looks.”
“Pretty Polly is pushing hard to get a foothold in the U.S. market and I expect them to turn up in a store near you very soon,” she added.

The new catalog also introduces some hot new products Eldorado is very excited about including Graphic Jean Leggings and Xotic Eyes – both as perfect for Halloween as they are for a night out on the town.
For retailers looking to diversify, Eldorado has increased their selection of wigs and accessories.
Cash in on the popular culture with a guidette-style pouf wig (just add alcohol and fake tanner!) or a pretty platinum number that looks like it came right out of Lady Gaga’s private collection.
When it comes to body decorations, customers will love to get hands-on for Halloween with Eldorado’s assortment of Liquid Latex, body glitter, and temporary tattoos.               'Shut Air V' Fabric
Japanese textile maker Komatsu Seiren Co has announced the creation of a stretch knit fabric it claims is both breathable and windproof.
Made from a porous material film of special urethane resin, the new material has been dubbed "Shut Air V" and will be launched in September.
Sportswear makers are the primary targets, and sales targets are 300,000 meters for the first year, or JPY2bn (US$24m) in sales. After three years the company hopes to shift 100m meters or JPY6bn yen in sales. Komatsu says the new material has "excellent" stretch characteristics, including stretch recovery, wash durability, and breathablity.

Priest and Pastor
A priest and pastor from the local parishes were standing by the side of the road holding up a sign that read, "The End is Near! Turn yourself around now before it's too late!"
They planned to hold up the sign to each passing car. As the first driver sped past, he yelled, "Leave us alone...we don't believe in that religious stuff!"
From around the curve they heard screeching tires and a big splash. One clergyman said to the other, "Do you think we should just put up a sign that says, 'Bridge Out' instead?"
