Wild Orchid Made UK Debut
Russia's largest lingerie retailer, the Wild Orchid group, made its UK debut in August with a new store at the Bluewater shopping center in Kent.
The move makes Wild Orchid the first Russian retail chain to set up in the UK and is likely to act as a springboard for further expansion. Four shops are planned this year in and around London, and the company is also exploring options for new outlets in mainland Europe and China.
The company will trade under the Vendetta brand, but will also sell products from labels such as Christian Lacroix, Roberto Cavalli, Dior and Alberta Ferretti.
Wild Orchid, which has annual sales of GBP50m (US$99.3m) is owned by a group of private individuals, including president and joint founder Alexander Federov. Two Irish private-equity funds took a $50m stake in the company earlier this year.

     Kika Villareal Debuts
    at Lingerie Americas

                         by Luis Paredes
Katherina Bastidas-Ansink didn’t seem to “fit” into much of the intimate apparel out there. She reasoned that if her voluptuous, 5’2”, Latin frame felt out of place, then most of the other Hispanic women with whom she shares a common heritage and body-type must feel the same. So she decided to do something about it.  Enter Kika Villareal. This new line of intimates created by Bastidas-Ansink, president of Kika Villareal debuted at Lingerie Americas, August 5 -7 in New York, and caters to Hispanic women.
“We want to show the warmth and creativity of the Hispanic culture.” said Bastidas-Ansink. “We've taken a page from Gabriel García Márquez and given many of our pieces a colonial look, rich in history, colors, and tactile experience. We’re catering to our culture.”
Being new on the scene isn’t deterring Kika Villareal. The company is looking to work with a PR firm or advertising agency to help spread awareness of their unique brand. “We're hoping to use an agencies connections and networking to formulate a marketing and brand strategy for us,” said Bastidas-Ansink. “We’re very excited.” In the mean time, Kika Villareal will continue to spread the word via Spanish-language television morning shows, Hispanic-oriented activities and through press releases and word of mouth. More info on their website, www.kikavillareal.com.
-Luis Paredes is a freelance journalist and graphic designer with extensive trade experience in the intimate apparel industry. His work focuses on the marketing and communication design efforts of intimate apparel companies. His design studio, Seven Hills Graphic Design,  creates Catalogs, Ads, and Brochures with a focus on attracting buyers.

Woolworths' Risky Panty
                Policy
Woolworths apparently allows customers to try on panties in the fitting room and even return them if they are ill-fitting.
A visit to three Woolworths stores in the city confirmed that customers could try on panties in the changing rooms.
Upon request, the retailer confirmed in a statement that the trying on of  underwear in Woolworths stores was permitted "provided that customers do so over their existing underwear".
However, three store assistants at the Adderley Street branch said that although it was policy to fit panties only over clothing, this was hard to monitor behind the curtains, and customers often fitted panties over their bare skin.
Assistants at Canal Walk and Bayside said a new policy allowed customers to fit and return underwear if it did not fit the customer. The shop resold them if they were "in a saleable condition".
Some fitting assistants at the stores said they were unhappy with the practice as it could be abused and was not well monitored and was out of their control, they said.
"You tell someone to try it on top of their own underwear but you can't monitor what they do in the cubicle. Often the panties don't fit, and the customer doesn't buy them and returns them soiled," said one assistant at the Adderley Street store.
A city doctor said if this was happening, the practice was hygienically risky. Gynecologist Dr Howard Manyonga said there were two main risks exposing somebody to someone else's fluids and infestations of pubic lice.
Manyonga said: "I'm in shock that they have such a policy. If one person soils the panty, the next person can contact these fluids. Not a lot of infections can be transmitted but the risk is not worth it," he said. Pubic lice or eggs could easily be picked up, he added.
A medical microbiologist said there was a theoretic risk of transmission of herpes simplex virus, candida, trichomoniasis and bacterial infections (particularly in the presence of open skin lesions) in this situation.
"Herpes viruses and trichomonas do not survive long on inanimate objects and the risk of transmission would be essentially negligible.
However, bacteria can be pretty resistant so, potentially, transmission of these could occur," said the doctor.
Asked to explain its policy, Woolworths said in a statement that there was a requirement in many instances for underwear to be fitted before final selection "and it is for this reason that Woolworths provides fitting rooms to Woolworths customers".
"The trying on of underwear is permitted provided that customers do so over their existing underwear. In addition, Woolworths will accept returns of items fitted at home.
The Woolworths customer is assured of cleanliness of products sold in stores through ticketing and the inspection process on items not selected by customers."
Edgars, Foschini and Truworths said they didn't allow the practice or the returning of underwear.
A Foschini employee said: "We can't allow people to try on panties or return them. It's an international standard."

                     The Mountie
A woman went into a bar in Newfoundland and saw a Mountie with his feet propped up on a table. He had the biggest boots she'd ever seen.
She asked him if was true what they say about men with big feet.
The Mountie grinned and said, "Sure is, little lady. Why don't you come over to the barracks and let me prove it to you?"
The woman wanted to find out for herself, so she spent the night with him. The next morning she handed him a $100 bill.
Blushing, he said, "Well, thanks, ma'am. I'm real flattered. Nobody ever paid me for my services before."
"Don't be flattered...take the money and buy yourself boots that fit."
