             What Color is that?
Pink isn't just pink, it's phlox or blush. Beige isn't beige when it can be sand or champagne. And brown certainly would never be brown when it could be cinnamon, tobacco or stone.
Designers unveiling their latest looks at the semi-annual New York fashion week say they spend untold effort not only choosing colors but naming those hues, drawing inspiration from old movies, summer resorts, Victorian lingerie and even childhood memories.
At the Anne Klein show, the color brown was coined bark, white was cloud, black was pitch and pink was the phlox flower. At Bill Blass, brown was stone, gray was pearl, beige was champagne, off-white was candlelight, gold was cognac, green was seafoam, pink was blush and brown was cinnamon and butterscotch and creme brulee.
Color names derived from food, flowers and nature have the most appeal, color psychologist Leatrice Eiseman said.
"Who can resist?" said Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute, considered by many to be a definitive source on color in fashion, textile and interior design.
"It evokes a picture and it evokes a scent," she said. "You get as many senses going as possible."
Take the word dew, she said. While it is neither tangible nor any particular color, "it's something wonderful," she said. By comparison, "Shrek" green, based on the children's movie, would not be a particularly good name in fashion.
At the show by the Chaiken design house, dark blue was dusk, brown was nut, orange was sunset and green was sea. At Oscar de la Renta, green was absinthe and beige was sand. At Luca Luca, blue was water; at Nicole Miller, brown was tea; at Ellen Tracy, orange was tigerlily; at Peter Som, green was lawn and at Douglas Hannant, yellow was sunflower and orange was poppy.
"I chose all the shades of the sun," said Anne Klein designer Michael Smaldone in the same report.
Color trends emerge from such sources as a popular food or a traveling art exhibit, Eiseman said.
Chocolate and coffee colors such as espresso, latte and mocha, for example, grew out of the popularity of coffee bars in the 1990s, she said.
Each new fashion season does not necessarily produce new colors as much as subtle changes or unusual combinations such as Carolina Herrera's use of typically fall colors such as black, white, citron (that's yellow), burned sienna (dark orange-brown) and cayenne (peppery pink) to produce one of the most memorable lines for next spring so far.

"Aren't you wearing your wedding ring on the wrong finger?"
The other replied, "Yes I am, I married the wrong man."

New Look Sales Recover On Autumn Ranges in the UK.
Leading women's fashion chain New Look Group Plc on Thursday posted a 1.4 per cent hike in same-store sales for the first five weeks of the second half.
The Weymouth-based operator of 500 stores said same-store sales for the 26 weeks to September 27 fell 3.6 per cent although total sales rose by the same amount.
It added profit margins improved during the first half thanks to tight cost and inventory control and said recent sales had improved due to the successful launch of its autumn fashion collection.
Chief executive Stephen Sunnucks said: "The difficulties of the summer season are now behind us and we are encouraged by recent trading.

In full view of passers-by, a semi-naked model reclines in the shop window of Harrods department store in Knightsbridge, London, September 4, 2003. The live sitting was part of the launch of a $27 million art exhibition which includes works by Andy Warhol, Pablo Picasso, Rembrandt and LS Lowry. The highlight of the collection is Claude Monet's 'La Mer Vue des Falasies,' a seascape valued at $1.25 million and the most expensive item ever offered for sale at Harrods.

    Dallas Fashion Center

Friend or Foe to Reps and Buyers?

On a recent visit to Dallas I visited with  independent sales representatives Paula Alison and Rick Butts of Paula Alison Sales.
After 25 years as a tenant in the Dallas Apparel Mart (Now Fashion Center Dallas) they have been denied a lease in the World Trade Center where all tenants must relocate due to the recent sale of the current Mart.
After paying rent in a timely manner for many years and running a top notch operation with lines including Shirley of Hollywood, Leg Avenue, Tu Shy, Sinclair Intimates and  and Hot Line.
These are all respected and solid companies.
Yet management of the Mart does not intend to offer Paula Alison Sales a new lease.    Mitzi Tally, Executive V.P. of lease administration wrote a letter that offered priority to lease holders with a lease in place until March 1, 2004 .
Paula Alison Sales was not offered a renewal lease.     They were offered temporary space options downstairs at more money than paying for a showroom 12 months a year.
To me this sounds most unreasonable.    They called attention to the nature of business Paula Alison does, i.e. Sexy.  But they gave showrooms to representatives who had the same lines if their lease had been in place until March 1, 2004 .      Left: Paula & Rick
They indicated that there was not enough space to go around.    This makes me wonder how will “Exotic” lingerie grow with no place to go-or show.
It seems the plan is to phase out sexy intimate apparel.
One has to wonder what gives them the right to dictate the size or growth of our industry.
Owners, reps and buyers alike are all rightfully concerned.
When buyers from all over the country go to Dallas , they expect “one stop shopping”.
Now the only alternative is to take the temporary space that was offered downstairs in the world Trade Center at very high rates.
This is the reward for 25 years of loyalty to the Mart.
Paula Alison Sales maintains an active website promoting the Mart in which hundreds of buyers a year are able to get information regarding all Mart related activities.

Above is the Showroom of Paula Alison Sales "Too Sexy?
Somehow, none of the blame seems to be on the Mart. And basically the Mart wants to squeeze out the exotic classification which seems to me unprofessional, as well as preventing those individuals from doing business.    This ultimately hurts the customer.
I don’t have an answer but, I do know that it is bad business and what goes around comes around.
With poor parking and showrooms stuck on the 13th and 14th floors of a building that caters to home furnishings and jewelry, lets see what happens to the business.  After all, its sexy intimate apparel that added spice and interest to a fading Dallas Apparel Mart.
Time will tell..

Andy Weinstock has been in the fabric and textile business all his life, but professionally since 1969.
"I love what I do, selling fabrics around the globe. I've met lots of interesting, creative, dynamic folks; some have become dear friends. I love to help new businesses find the things they need to become successful. It works for everyone."
You can ask Andy questions about Fabrics at

Hi Andy,I am opening up a very fine retail shop in the Colorado Market. I am looking for 1-2 pages of descriptors for every fine fabric that is used in Lingerie along with care instructions.
Can you steer me in the right direction?  Thank you in advance for your time and consideration! Alicia Vargo Pampered Passions Fine Lingerie
  pamperedpassions@yahoo.com
Dear Alicia: visit www.textileaffairs.com
for laundering instructions. As far as the descriptions of the fabrics, your garment suppliers should be able and willing to help you with these.  Good Luck, Andy

Hi Andy I'm writing a second time. I never heard back from you to my first inquiry re: sources of cotton backed satin in purple, and/or green. Last request in case my first went into email limbo. Bye and best, Ann Grogan, president Romantasy
   anng@romantasy.com
Dear Ann: sorry that our response must have got lost in email cyberspace.  The upcoming International Fashion Fabrics Show in New York City is about to take place in mid October.      Register at www.fabricshow.com . There you will find many different companies, some of which may have what you need.  Also visit www.fabrics.net and go to their sourcing area.    I just visited your web site and do remember responding some time ago. In addition to the upcoming New York Fabric show, there is a wholesale fabric show on or about October 20-22 in Los Angeles. There you may be able to find the suppliers you need. Good Luck, Andy
