Textile Trade Barriers To Blame For Poverty
More than 20 million poverty-stricken people in developing countries around the world have been denied the chance of much-needed jobs because of strict quotas and tariffs on textiles and clothing, it was claimed on Wednesday.
The International Monetary Fund said "industrial economy restrictions on trade in textiles and clothing have prevented creation of over 20 million jobs in developing countries, many of which would represent a step out of rural poverty".
The claim was made in a background paper on international trade matters in which it warned that despite agreements to scrap textile and garment quotas, most will remain in place until 2005.

Prison Visitors Alarmed By Bra Policy
The prison's metal detector beeped even after Sonya Greene had removed her sandals, necklace and watch. She realized only one thing could be setting it off, but that something - her blue satin bra - wasn't coming off.
MacDougall-Walker Correctional Institution takes the same stance as other high-security prisons across the country - if you can't clear the metal detector, you can't come in. Guards want to make sure visitors haven't stashed a razor blade, knife or some other dangerous instrument in a place people might be too embarrassed to look.
Many women find out their underwire bras are a problem only after they've shown up at the prison, leaving them two options: Leave or lose the bra.
