M&S Cuts Return Policy
The decision by retailer Marks & Spencer to slash its return policy from 90 days to just 35 days has led to some shoppers threatening to boycott the chain.
The store made the changes to its three-month "no quibbles" refund policy back in April, but consumer groups and the media have only now latched on to switch.
Even though the new terms are detailed on receipts, along with the last date on which a purchase can be returned, the move has angered thousands of customers who say they will now be stuck with unwanted items.
Consumer watchdog Which? says the "drastic" change should have been made clearer to M&S customers, particularly when the generous returns policy was a stand-out feature of the shopping experience at the high street chain.
And it warns the retailer could lose business as a result.
"Marks and Spencer seem more concerned with comparing themselves to other high street brands instead of standing out to its loyal customers - and not publicising such a drastic change is slack," said Which? shopping researcher Sarah Dennis.
"Any high street shop that is aiming to bring its policies in line with its competitors rather than going the extra mile for its shoppers may see a shift in shoppers' loyalty.'
A spokesman for Marks & Spencer defended the change however, saying that it reviewed its returns policy "in line with the market and it still remains one of the best on the high street."
"We offer our customers a full refund or exchange on goods returned within 35 days, which compares favourably to our competitors, many of which offer just 28 days.
"The last date for return is clearly printed on the till receipt and the overwhelming majority of our customers return unwanted items well within this
period."
Although he wouldn't say whether the retailer would revert back to the 90-day policy following the negative publicity, it has however extended its Christmas returns policy.
Any gifts purchased between October 1, and December 11, can now be taken back to its stores until January 16.
This latest set-back for M&S comes three months after it was forced to drop a GBP2 surcharge on larger-sized bras after internet protests pointed
out other high-street lingerie retailers were offering one price across all sizes.
The retailer has also been hit hard by the economic downturn as shoppers shunned its stores for cheaper rivals.

New Antimicrobial Treatment
              Developed
A new antimicrobial textile treatment has been launched for apparel and workwear fabrics.
The Stay Fresh technology from Quick-Med Technologies Inc is said to be effective in controlling the growth of odour-causing bacteria and preventing associated staining.
But it is also claimed to be extremely durable, effective for the life of the treated fabric by maintaining sustained efficacy through 75 laundering cycles.
"We believe that the unprecedented sustained performance of Stay Fresh will provide apparel and other textile manufacturers an important new way to differentiate and add value to their products,"
said J Ladd Greeno, CEO of Quick-Med Technologies.
It can be used with a broad range of fibre types and blends on whites and coloured fabrics, and because it features an eco-friendly active agent that is not depleted during repeated laundering, there is no environmental impact of the wash water.
The company is now working to identify commercial partners to bring this technology to market.

Hanesbrands Test Apparel
     on Mount Everest
T-shirt, bra, and underwear maker Hanesbrands Inc is to test apparel made under its Champion and Duofold apparel brands by sponsoring an exhibition to the summit of Mount Everest next year.
'Expedition Hanesbrands: Climb With Us' will be led by international mountaineer Jamie Clarke and his team who will be wearing socks, base layer, insulating layer, and soft- and hard-shell garments developed by Hanesbrands' R&D team.
A one-of-a-kind summit suit is also due to be unveiled in January to keep Clarke warm and mobile in the high winds and severe cold on the highest reaches of 29,035-foot Everest, the highest peak in the world.
"Champion and Duofold have a long history of authenticity and innovative apparel," said Kevin Hall, executive vice president and general manager of outerwear for Hanesbrands.
"By bringing the strengths of both brands together, we are also exploring new cold-weather training gear inspired by the research and development we are doing for the non-commercial apparel Jamie will use high on Everest."
Clarke and the climbing team will test prototypes of apparel that integrate unique innovations in fabric technology, garment design, and cutting-edge materials that have never before been used in apparel.
Some of the features include cellulosic yarn that has imbedded material that changes phase from a solid to liquid to hold heat; a seamless piece that has six different knit constructions to create varying performance by area of the body; and brand-new stretch-woven fabric that remains pliable at cold temperatures.
Two web sites and an online social community will follow the team's progress.

Poor Parrot
A lady who was very lonesome bought a parrot from a pet store, complete with cage. Before purchasing it she got a guarantee that the parrot would talk. She took the parrot home.
In a week and a half she returned to the store very disappointed. "The parrot doesn't talk."
"Did you buy a mirror?"
"No."
"Every parrot needs a mirror. "
So she bought a mirror and installed it in the parrot's cage. Another week and a half went by and she returned. "The parrot still doesn't talk."
"Did you buy a ladder?"
"No."
"Every parrot needs a ladder."
So she bought a ladder and installed it in the cage. Another week and a half passed and she returned."The parrot still doesn't talk."
"Did you buy a swing?"
"No."
"Every parrot needs a swing."
So she bought a swing and installed it in the cage. A week and a half later she returned. She was furious!
The store owner asked, "Did the parrot talk?"
"No!, he died."
"Oh, that's terrible. Did he say anything before he died?"
"Yes."
"What?"
"He gasped 'Don't they have any food down at that store?'"
