Understanding Ecommerce
                     Part I
by the Gozooko Guys (Bryan and Karl)
We just got back from the International Lingerie Show and it was great to see so many of you! As usual Michael and Jeff put on a great show and we are already looking forward to the April show!
We love the ILS it gives us an opportunity to hear first hand the challenges people are facing in the industry.
One of the biggest challenges facing organizations today is how to choose an ecommerce solution. Once again we heard some unfortunate stories of good people being taken advantage of by unscrupulous people. Having paid 10’s of thousands of dollars and having nothing to show for it.
To better understand exactly what to look for in an ecommerce solution we are offering this multi-part series on the components and features of ecommerce.
So let’s start off with the basics of hosting services:

Shared Hosting - This service means you are on a server with other hosting clients. You share the same CPU, Memory, Operating System, Applications. Not usually used for ecommerce.
Pro: Inexpensive
Con: Not good for ecommerce, not flexible, limited system resources, one client can effect the performance of others on the system.

Dedicated Hosting – This is a service where you have a complete server dedicated to you. You have access to all the resources on the system, and can usually do as you wish with it.
Pro: Access to the complete server resources. Can be designed to fit your needs of CPU, memory, hard drive, etc…
Con: Expensive. May require skilled resources to manage.

Virtual Private Server or Virtual Dedicated Server Hosting – This is a cross between dedicated hosting and shared hosting. This is where you have multiple Virtual Servers on the same hardware, but with allocated resources (CPU, Memory, etc…) dedicated to each Virtual Server. This means that what is done on one Virtual Server has no effect on any of the other Virtual Servers on the system.
Pro: Less expensive then a dedicated server, amount of resources can easily added or reduced, allows complete control of virtual server,
Con: Some providers will sell you “x” resources, but actually give you a smaller allocation which will result in poor performance.

Managed Web Hosting – This is like the dedicated model but with added services such as a system administrator to manage the server. Pro: More customized service. More accessibility and flexibility.
Con: Higher cost than dedicated.
Server Co-Location – This is where you purchase the server and provide it to the hosting company to put in their data center. Usually the hosting company is responsible only for the connectivity. This can be combined with other services such as administration, security, etc…
Pro: Allows the most customizable flexible solution.
Con: High level of skills and management required.

The next installment will cover availability, disaster recovery, and business continuity.

Hanesbrands To Sell Three
    Yarn Manufacturing
            Operations

Innerwear, outerwear and hosiery maker Hanesbrands Inc is to sell three of its yarn manufacturing operations to Parkdale, and shutter a fourth facility, after deciding there is no strategic advantage to be gained from producing its own yarn. The plans will lead to the loss of around 175 jobs, the Winston-Salem, North Carolina based company said.
But it also expects to generate $100m from a combination of the sale proceeds, reduced raw material requirements and reduced inventory.
Hanesbrands will instead source all of its yarn needs from large-scale yarn suppliers - including privately-owned Parkdale which will supply a "substantial amount" of the apparel maker's western hemisphere yarn needs.
"Producing our own yarn, when more than adequate large-scale supplies exist, serves no strategic purpose," explained chairman and CEO Richard A Noll.
He added: "We are focused on optimising the investments we have made in our supply chain that give us a competitive advantage."
Under the deal, Parkdale will take over operations of Hanesbrands' yarn plants in Rabun Gap in Georgia, Mountain City in Tennessee, and Galax in Virginia, which have a combined workforce of 780 employees.
Parkdale will supply Hanesbrands from these facilities and other existing Parkdale US production plants.
Hanesbrands, meanwhile, will cease new production immediately at its remaining yarn plant in Sanford, North Carolina, which has 150 employees; and will close its cotton and yarn warehouses, also in North Carolina, which have 25 workers between them.

Organic Vegetables
My wife asked me to buy ORGANIC vegetables from the market. I went and looked around and couldn’t find any.
So I grabbed an old, tired looking employee and said, “These vegetables are for my wife. Have they been sprayed with any poisonous chemicals?”
“The produce guy looked at me and said, “No. You’ll have to do that yourself.”

Intimas Group Sold
Lingerie firm Intimas Group Plc, whose brands include Charnos and Lepel, has been bought out of administration by textiles maker Linwood Fabrics Ltd.
The sale of a "significant part of the business," including the two brands, safeguards 55 jobs.
But it leaves the administrators reviewing the rest of its operations with redundancies likely amongst the remaining 150 staff.
Intimas designs and supplies ladies' intimate apparel including lingerie, nightwear and swimwear.
Based in Long Eaton, Nottingham, it also produces collections for major high street retailers as well as trading through a number of its own retail outlets located around the UK.
It called in the administrators in July following a period of difficult trading due to the slowdown in consumer spending and adverse movements in foreign exchange on imported goods.
"We are assessing the options as a matter of urgency with respect to those areas of the business which did not form part of this sale, and will continue to liaise with the relevant customers, suppliers and employees as to the options available to us and the timetable," said joint administrator Stuart Maddison.
