Collapse Of WTO Talks Delights US Textile Makers
US trade associations have praised the collapse of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) talks in Cancun, Mexico.
Auggie Tantillo, Washington Coordinator for the American Manufacturing Trade Action Coalition (AMTAC) said: “We commend the US government for recognising that no deal is better than a bad deal.”
The WTO talks in Cancun were designed to produce a specific blueprint for trade liberalisation in all sectors, from agriculture to manufacturing, among the 148 member countries of the WTO. The blueprint would have then served as the guideline for concluding the WTO Doha Round sometime late next year.
However, WTO trade ministers failed to agree to a text laying out broad commitments on issues such as the elimination of export subsidies, the reduction of tariff and non-tariff barriers and basic rules relating to investment and government procurement procedures.
Tantillo added: “The failure of these talks is a significant positive development for US manufacturers who want to preserve their investment and presence in the US market.
“If these talks had moved forward, it is clear that the final result would have mandated a further substantial reduction, if not the total elimination, of US tariffs in practically all manufacturing sectors.
”Moreover, the talks would have certainly allowed various market protecting exemptions for many of the same countries that are the chief source of our nearly $500 billion dollar annual trade deficit. The effect on the US manufacturing sector would have been devastating.”
The talks stalled as it became evident that developing countries were demanding substantial concessions in regard to market access, without a willingness to provide equal reciprocity in terms of access to their own markets.
The American Textile Manufacturers Institute (ATMI) had warned that the manufacturing section of the draft declaration was alarming to the US textile industry because it appeared to bend over backwards to satisfy developing country demands while ignoring US textile concerns.

International Lingerie Show
The first International Lingerie Show held in New York City was a great success if you base success on the number of “good” buyers who attended and how satisfied the exhibitors were.
The show was held September 7th, 8th and 9th at the Metropolitan Pavilion on West 18th St. Buyers came from all Northeastern states and as far as Chicago and Miami. The attendance was so strong that almost every exhibitor said they would return for the spring show at the same location next March 28th, 29th and 30th.
Specialty Trade Shows, producers of the International Lingerie Shows, was so elated and certain of future successes in New York City that they have gone a step forward and have reserved space for next September 15th, 16th and 17th and have asked the Metropolitan to hold similar dates for three years.
Show Manager, Richard Gould, said that “he had been looking for a New York venue after it was decided that Atlantic City was not the right place for the show, but it wasn’t until now that the dates and the place came together.” He went on to say that “he wouldn’t be surprised to see the New York show rival the company’s January 11th to 13th show in Orlando or even the large Las Vegas shows done every April and October.

If you had a rough weekend, don't feel bad. We guarantee that
Christina Aguilera feels a lot worse.
The singing sensation visited Stockholm
last weekend, where she proved that she
respects the old "When In Rome" courtesy.
At her late Friday luncheon at upscale
restaurant Riche, Ms. Aguilera guzzled
vodka like a 12th Century Viking
(or a Swedish construction worker on a
Saturday night). Unfortunately, she didn't
have the physical stamina of a Viking,
and subsequently had to be carried out of the restaurant and into her hotel room at 6.30 pm.
We hear that the rest of her plans were cancelled that evening.

Hi Andy - I am looking for fabrics for my slipper collection (feets of
fancy) and am specially interested in Oriental patterns in brocades, etc. Price is important (naturally) and I am looking for small quantities. Open to suggestions, if you have any to offer.
Thanks Phyllis Kay
Dear Phyllis: timing in life is everything, and your timing is perfect. There are two great textile trade shows coming up in the next several weeks. Visit
www.fabricshow.com to register. The International Fashion Fabric Expo will be in New York City in mid October. One week later is the Los Angeles Fabric Show at the Mart there. In addition, visit
www.fabrics.net . They have one of the best sourcing areas available anywhere on the Internet. Good Luck, Andy
