        Burlington Coat Falls
Burlington Coat Factory Warehouse Corporation, which operates nearly 300 retail outlets across 42 states, today reported a net loss in sales for the first quarter of more than $20.5m.
For the three months ended September 1, the net loss was $20.57m, compared with a net loss in the comparative three month period last year of $13.53m.
Sales for the first quarter this year were $451.5m, compared to sales of $415.6m in the corresponding period last year. Comparative store sales for the quarter increased 3 per cent while total sales for the comparative quarter increased 8.6 per cent.
Historically, the company's stores have lost money during the first fiscal quarter, with the increased loss this year being blamed on the cost of setting up and running nearly 40 new stores and an extra distribution facility in Pennsylvania.

Secrets of the Same-Store Sales Game
Savvy chain retailers maximize same-store sales results by diligently pursuing expansion and remodeling strategies. The statistic gains a boost from what I call the "second-year effect"
because many new stores continue to ramp up in sales during their second or even third year of operation.
A possible implication is that a retail chain may derive greater productivity benefits (not to mention shareholder equity) from maintaining a relatively young physical plant than it does from marketing and merchandising activities.

Elle's Intimates Go Online
Elle MacPherson's lingerie line, called Intimates, goes on sale in the UK this month after building a name for itself down under. But if you're not in the vicinity of Selfridges, Oxford Street or House of Fraser stores, you can at least check out the supermodel's underwear at figleaves.com - and enjoy shots of "The Body" herself modeling the slips, bras, thongs and briefs.
As the exclusive online retailer for the range, the site has created an Intimates "mini-site" that even offers downloadable screensavers and wallpapers for devoted fans of the Australian beauty.

Paris Fashion Shows Being Cancelled
After Attacks
PARIS  - A number of Paris's upcoming ready-to-wear fashion shows have been canceled -- some because of the deadly
attacks on the United States and others due to corporate restructuring, organizers said on Friday.
At least nine of the 95 scheduled shows have been called off in recent
weeks.
Leading fashion houses Helmut Lang, Cerruti and Torrente announced in the last few days they were canceling their shows scheduled during the October 5-13 Paris fashion week out of respect for the victims of the attacks on U.S. landmarks.
The attacks, which hit in the middle of New York fashion week, have
prompted organizers to call off spring-summer shows from London to
Milan. Many of the glitzy parties that usually accompany the shows have also been canceled.
The popular Las Vegas Lingerie Show scheduled for Oct 15-17, will go on as most buyers have said that they intend to attend this lingerie show.

ABC News has forbidden their newscasters and personnel to wear the American Flag Lapel Pins or Ribbons, saying that it may "OFFEND" some people.
I would love to know "WHO" they would offend.
I feel that at a time such as this, everyone and especially those who are in a position to make an impression on the world, should show their respect for our flag and show a little patriotism towards our country.    If you feel as I do, send them an e-mail by clicking on this address= http://www.abcnews.go.com/service/Help/abcmail_news.html

Hi, I have tried looking at www.heybabyofcalifornia.com  but it hasn't been working for the past 2 days that I checked. Do you have any info on them that you could share with me? Email or phone number, that would be great. Thank you  "Vanda Lima" <vandamarla@hotmail.com

Hi,   I'm trying to get different viewpoints and gather various information {from people such as yourself} about women in advertisements, particularly how they are designed to attract both genders and target different age groups. What is your opinion on the way that they are portrayed? Do you have any comments on subjects like product endorsement eg; Elle Mcphereson, for bendon? We are
particularly investigating the advertising campaigns involved with lingerie. Statistical data can also be included.
Thank you for your time Nadia Judd New Zealand

Can anyone out there help this lady???
Dear Editor:

I am a freelance writer who does a column for a weekly suburban newspaper in Wisconsin.
I am currently researching a story about slips. It seems to me that women do not wear slips as often now as they did during the previous generation.
Do you have any statistics, or do you know where I might find some, that would tell me if slip sales have declined in recent years?
Thank you for any insights. Sincerely, Peggy LeBrun

Hi there, I have a question. I saw a program about lingerie on TLC on the television, and there was a lingerie designer by the name of
Gabrielle Ross who makes Bras that close with ribbons or cords that tie in front instead of a hook closure(no hooks at all on the bras, just
really feminine and sexy ribbon ties and also cords) and her bikinis are like that too. She's british. Do you Know antyhing about this
designer and do you know where I can buy her mechandise? I will really appreciate it if you can find some information for me.
Thank You Yours Truly, Basma Arain AqUaGeNY@aol.com
