Understanding Ecommerce
                     Part III
by the Gozooko Guys (Bryan and Karl)
This is a continuation of a multi-part series to better understand exactly what to look for in an ecommerce solution. In our last article we covered availability, disaster recovery, and business continuity. This week we will cover PCI DSS, what it is and why it’s important.
What is PCI DSS? PCI DSS stands for “Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard” It is a set of standards developed by the major payment companies such as American Express, MasterCard, and Visa. These standards were developed to proactively protect a customer’s payment and account information. These standards address many things such as; how the network and software is designed, implemented, and managed, including the policies and procedures that go along with them.
Here is a list of the core principles of which the standards are developed. This information is from the PCI Security Standards website, www.pcisecuritystandards.org:
Build and Maintain a Secure Network
Requirement 1: Install and maintain a firewall configuration to protect cardholder data
Requirement 2: Do not use vendor-supplied defaults for system passwords and other security parameters
Protect Cardholder Data
Requirement 3: Protect stored cardholder data
Requirement 4: Encrypt transmission of cardholder data across open, public networks
Maintain a Vulnerability Management Program
Requirement 5: Use and regularly update anti-virus software
Requirement 6: Develop and maintain secure systems and applications
Implement Strong Access Control Measures
Requirement 7: Restrict access to cardholder data by business need-to-know
Requirement 8: Assign a unique ID to each person with computer access
Requirement 9: Restrict physical access to cardholder data
Regularly Monitor and Test Networks
Requirement 10: Track and monitor all access to network resources and cardholder data
Requirement 11: Regularly test security systems and processes
Maintain an Information Security Policy
Requirement 12: Maintain a policy that addresses information security

While the core principles are high level the work to create and manage compliant technical environments and solutions is not. A lot of detailed work and time is spent to design, implement, and manage PCI DSS compliant environments and solutions. This is not something that can be done as an after thought, or on the side. It has to be a core focus of your technical solution provider’s focus.
We don’t have to go into detail why this is so important, because many of us have been victims of stolen payment and account information or at the very least have read about it in the news or know someone who has been a victim. The negative impacts of these events are very real, and have deep personal and business impact. Don’t take the risk of using a non-complaint ecommerce solution.
At Gozooko, PCI DSS compliance is a core focus for us. Our network and Gozooko 1 solutions are PCI DSS compliant, and we continually strive to develop new solutions that mitigate and/or transfer the risks of inappropriate access to payment and account information so that our customers don’t have to worry about it.

If you have any topics you would like to see addressed in this column, or have any questions, please send us an email at GozookoGuys@gozooko.com

CurveNV Fashion Show
CurveNV Las Vegas 2009 showcases international lingerie, swimwear and men’s furnishings to over 2,500 buyers
CurvExpo 2009 wrapped up a whirlwind show during Las Vegas Fashion Week having added a new success to its already impressive track record. While some of the items featured at the industry’s hottest lingerie and swimwear show might have been a bit skimpy, the numbers definitely were not. 2,552 buyers, a 13% jump from 2008, crowded the ballrooms at the swanky Venetian Hotel in Las Vegas from August 31 through September 2 for a first glimpse of the latest fashions in lingerie, swimwear, daywear and men’s underwear. The recession was nowhere in sight as fashion professionals from the US and international markets enjoyed a crisp, organized presentation of trends and products that facilitated doing business.
The opulent atmosphere of the Titian Ballroom at the Venetian Hotel was an appropriate setting for the must-attend event of Curve Las Vegas 2009: The “So Curve “ Fashion show that kicked off the three-day CurvExpo on Monday evening Aug 31. More than 450 retailers crammed this standing-room-only happening, a slick, spectacular and ultra-professional production by A Suivre Paris !
On display were the best new intimate looks from the leaders in lingerie such as Wacoal, Chantelle , Le Mystere, Prima Donna, Natori, Carole Hochman , Hanky Panky , Cosabella , Marie Jo and more. A Trends Seminar presented by Concepts Paris gave a sneak peek into what fashion-forward customers will likely be buying in 2010, while a Bath and Body presentation offered insights into another growing product category. Leading brands in Men’s Underwear such as Hugo Boss, Diesel, Puma and Hanro were also represented, as were many famous swimwear lines, all under one roof.
Curve takes place in both New York and Las Vegas twice a year; this marks the show’s third year. This 6th and latest iteration of CurvExpo cemented its already stellar reputation among those in the intimate apparel industry as the biggest and best trade show of its kind. While the show has enjoyed popularity across the US since its inception, it also has a growing international clientele, with 20% of attendees at CurveNV Las Vegas 2009 traveling from the UK, Australia, Canada, Mexico and Japan to be part of the action.
All in all, while much of the fashion industry was in the summer doldrums this year due to the economy, August 2009 was a very good month for Curve, with two amazingly successful shows in New York and Las Vegas. It seems that when it comes to quality intimate apparel, both commercial buyers and consumers still want the very best, and are willing to pay for it.
CurvExpo is already gearing up for its next shows in February 2010, with a return appearance at the Venetian in Las Vegas on February 15, 16 and 17 and a show at New York City’s Javits Center Galleria on the 22nd, 23rd and 24th.

Unifi Expands Repreve Range
Yarn maker Unifi Inc has expanded the range of Repreve recycled products available in Asia with the launch of polyester staple fiber made from 100% recycled materials for use in spun yarns.
The fibers are supplied through its wholly-owned subsidiary based in Suzhou, China, called Unifi Textiles Suzhou Co Ltd (UTSC).
The Repreve line-up now includes recycled staple polyester, recycled filament polyester, recycled filament nylon 6.6, and recycled performance fibers.
The company has also launched a verification program to ensure fabrics and products made from Repreve are traceable, transparent and certifiably sustainable.
As part of this 'U Trust' program, a traceability technology called Fiberprint can analyze fabrics to certify the level of Repreve content.

Property Manager
A property manager of single-family residence was showing a unit to prospective tenants and asking the usual questions. "Professionally employed?" he asked.
"We're a military family," the wife answered.
"Children?"
"Oh, yes, ages nine and twelve," she answered proudly.
"Animals?"
"Oh, no," she said earnestly. "They're very well behaved."
