Retail Chiefs Optimistic About Christmas Trading
in the UK
Prospects for the UK retail sector are likely to remain bright into 2004 according to a survey of 150 industry leaders at an industry forum held in London late last week.
The exit poll of retail industry leaders at the Barclays Retail Industry Forum, showed just over half felt positive or very positive about the outlook for the retail sector for the next 12 months, with only 7.5 per cent pessimistic.
The poll also revealed 80 per cent believed Christmas trading prospects looked good or very good, with only one per cent predicting seasonal blues.
Barclays' national retail director, Paul Clarke, said: "Encouraged by robust trading over the summer retailers are clearly upbeat as they enter the crucial Christmas period.

Too Much for France???
French designer Sonia Rykiel waded straight into a heated debate about G-strings on Thursday, kitting out models like strippers in flesh-toned swimsuits peppered with diamante studs.
Just days after fellow advertisers called on underwear maker Triumph to withdraw a campaign for its Sloggi range of thongs on the grounds that it was offensive to women, the 73-year-old designer hailed the tiny knickers as a symbol of girl power.
To whoops and cheers from backstage, models stepped out satin hot pants and strapless demi cup bras studded with paste gems. A black lace babydoll left little to the imagination.
Rykiel made headlines last year with the opening of the provocative Rykiel Woman concept store, which retails sex toys alongside cashmere sweaters and velour jogging suits.
Her spring-summer ready-to-wear collection comes just as French teachers try to deal with a fashion craze among teenage girls to expose their midriffs and wear thongs designed to peek out above low-cut trousers.

business after working in a grocery store from 4:30 p.m. to midnight for three months at minimum wage while caring for
a new infant. "I wanted to stay home and be the best mother
I could be," says Hudson. "But at the same time I had to contribute to the household income."

Words
A husband looking through the paper came upon a study that said women use more words than men. Excited to prove to his wife his
long-held contention that women in general, and his wife in particular, talked too much, he showed her the study results, which stated:
"Men use about 15,000 words per day, but women use 30,000."
His wife thought awhile, then finally she said to her husband,
"That's because we have to repeat everything we say."
The husband said, "What?"

UK: Clothing, Footwear Retailers
Post Strong Sales Growth

By sector, underlying sales growth in the last three months volume was
