Bloomie's goes SoHo!
Seven months after Bloomingdale's confirmed that it was looking to open an outpost in downtown Manhattan, Federated Department Stores, the retailer's parent company, confirmed Thursday that construction will begin this spring on a Soho Bloomingdale's.
As anticipated, the store will be located at 504 Broadway, Canal Jeans' soon-to-be-former address.
Bloomingdale's will occupy 124,000-square-feet in the 1860 cast iron and stone building. The opening is currently slated for fall 2003.
The six-level store will carry men's and women's apparel, cosmetics, shoes and accessories as well as an assortment of home merchandise. The new Bloomingdale's will cater to a younger, more downtown crowd than its 550,000-square-foot midtown flagship; it will be home to exclusive contemporary collections, with an entire level devoted to denim.
Canal Jeans, which has occupied 504 Broadway since 1982, plans to leave the space in January, after hosting a major sale event that kicks off today.
"This was a wonderful offer that I couldn't pass up," said Ira Russack, principal owner of the property and owner of Canal Jeans, of the decision to leave this long-time home. "Canal Jean Co. was a pioneer in Soho and has been synonymous with street fashion for 30 years. It's time for new challenges - the Canal Jean Co. concept can move forward with new stores and licenses." In the summer of 2001, Canal Jeans opened a store in Brooklyn.

Downtown Bar Denied License Renewal Over Lingerie Shows
The Marion County liquor board has decided not to renew a downtown bar's liquor license because of lingerie shows the tavern held.
The board Tuesday declined to renew the license of Tailgators bar, located in the 300 block of South Illinois Street, because it was cited twice for public indecency when models allegedly removed their clothing -- once in August 2001 and once in November -- RTV6's Jack Rinehart reported.
At a board hearing Tuesday, Tailgators owner David White produced documents that showed the second public indecency charge was dismissed in April.    White also said the lingerie models had no financial incentive to remove their clothing.
"They're modeling, and they're selling the tickets (with which customers can) win the lingerie that they're modeling," White said.
Still, the board ruled against the bar. White said he planned to appeal the ruling.

Sex shop chain hopes to seduce suburbs
LONDON- Europe's leading sex store chain, Germany's Beate Uhse AG, is hoping to seduce British consumers with a new type of shop aimed primarily at women, company executives said on Tuesday.
The group, listed on Germany's MDAX mid-cap segment, has 200 shops in Europe and a mail order business selling lingerie, erotic films and sex toys.
The firm's first UK shop will open on Wednesday in the middle-class London suburb of Sutton, Beate Uhse's head of UK retail operations, Michael Vaughan, told reporters on Tuesday.
"The Beate Uhse store is positioned ... in a busy section of the high street directly opposite McDonalds," Vaughan said.
The company said it had traditionally catered to men, who made up 90 percent of customers in its shops. Its online and mail order operations, however, were more popular with women, and the company's new shops aimed to tap into the lucrative female market.
"We would expect to have 65-70 percent of customers be women shopping on their own," Vaughan said.
