Underwear maker Triumph International Ltd. will close 48 stores in Japan before the end of the year, President Christian Thoma said.
Triumph, which currently has 310 shops in Japan, will close outlets that deal in low-priced products in a bid to raise profitability. The cost of closing down the shops is expected to total one billion yen.
Meanwhile, the company intends to open 20 new stores during the year.
For the current business year through December, Triumph plans to report sales that are slightly larger than 50.6 billion yen for the previous year, when it opened new shops and closed 25.

Lingerie Americas New York
Lingerie Americas New York, which was held February 24 thru February 26 at the Altman Building and Metropolitan Pavilion (135 West 18th Street), attracted quality buyers with show dates scheduled after the Valentine’s Day selling period and a large selection of the finest Intimate Apparel and Swimwear brands. The leading Intimate Apparel trade show in North America lured 2,415 visitors, an increase of 2.5% compared to last February.
“Our exhibitors reported being very pleased with the results of our February session in New York, writing a lot of orders and meeting good customers” said Patrice Argain, CEO, Lingerie Americas. “Clearly, traffic at the show indicates that the buyers were happy we held the event when they wanted it, after Valentine’s Day. We will continue to follow the needs of the industry when planning the show and we look forward to building on the success of both the New York show as well as Lingerie Americas at
WWDMAGIC.”
Among the leading retailers attending Lingerie Americas were Bare Necessities, Bloomingdale’s, Fred Segal, Fig Leaves, Henri Bendel, Intimacy, La Petite Coquette, Lord & Taylor, Luxe Lingerie, Macy’s, Nordstrom, Saks Fifth Avenue (New York and Dubai), Selfridges, Takashimaya, Victoria’s Secret, Zitomer and many more.
The February edition showcased over 240 brands, including internationally recognized industry heavyweights Calida, Carole Hochman, Chantelle, Fantasie, Hanro, Natori, OnGossamer, Panache, Wacoal among others, as well as designer brands such as Andres Sarda, Betsey Johnson Intimates, Christian Lacroix, Donna Karan Intimates, Ed Hardy Intimates, Féraud,
Kenzo, Nina Ricci, Sonia Rykiel, Oscar de la Renta Lingerie and many more.
Exhibitor satisfaction was high, according to a post-show survey. Anna Shnir, Sales Executive, Panache Lingerie, said, “Great quality and quantity of buyers.”
Heather Thomson, Creator of Yummie Tummie, commented, “Really great buyers attend Lingerie Americas and the intimate setting allows for a personable experience.”
Marinia Lelchuk, VP of Sales & Merchandising, Buckler, stated, “Everyone loves that Lingerie Americas was after Valentine’s Day.”
“The Lingerie Americas team is very professional and the show is a result of this,” declared Tiffany Ajmo, Marketing Director, Blush.
Lingerie Americas’ post-Valentine’s Day dates this season accommodated the desires of 92% of specialty stores, and 85 % of the all buyers, who responded to a survey on the topic conducted last year. Show visitors requested that the dates be moved to allow them to stay in their stores during the holiday.
The attendance this season of many department stores also indicates that the schedule was convenient for those buyers as well.
In addition to the high quality brands at Lingerie Americas New York, visitors had the opportunity to attend seminars and presentations designed to help retailers maximize success.
“Eveden Inc. Fit School Seminar” - Presented by Frederika Zappe, Eveden National Fit Specialist drew over 80 retailers at each of the two presentations held during the show. Attendees learned how to fit the Full-Busted and the Full-Figured woman.
A nearly standing room-only crowd also attended “Let Your Sales Floor Do the Selling” - Presented by Sarah Daniels, publisher of Intimate Apparel Business magazine, and Mercedes Gonzales, Director of Global Purchasing Companies. Attendees received a crash course in Visual Merchandising 101 and learned the tips and tricks to getting the most of their store’s walls and windows.
The Best of Intima Lounge presented an ongoing video about the now famous Best Shop Awards contest.

Pakistan Manufacturers Protest
Around 100 Pakistani textile mill owners have protested
against a request from the Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Ltd (SNGPL) to raise gas prices by 35%.
Textile mill owners and their employees gathered at Pearl Continental Hotel, Lahore, April 22, wearing
black armbands and holding black flags and banners.
Government authorities were holding public hearing of the request inside the hotel.
Akber Sheikh, chairman of the All Pakistan Textile Mills Association told media after the protest that the
cost of gas constituted about 25% of the total
manufacturing cost.
He said a further rise would push up their total cost by almost 10%, rendering them uncompetitive against
international competitors like Bangladesh who were getting gas at a much lower rate.
