Dora Gets a Bra
Proving that even 2-dimensional kids can’t stay adorable forever, Mattel and Nickelodeon have given a new version of the bilingual little adventurer the mall rat treatment.
Come fall, a new Dora doll, which will join the regular “younger” Dora on the shelves, will be sporting long hair and a big-city attitude.
“As tweenage Dora, our heroine has moved to the big city, attends middle school and has a whole new fashionable look,” the two companies announced in a recent release. “Girls really identify with Dora and we knew that girls would love to have their friend Dora grow up with them, and experience the new things that they were going through themselves.”
Oh, it all goes so fast. Just yesterday, Dora, Backpack and Map were trekking through the Nutty Forest, over Rainbow Mountain and across the Icky-Sticky Sand to get to her abuela’s house where she was nice to her familia .
Now she’s blowing off Iggy, Tico and the gang for texting her friends outside Hot Topic.
Of course, parents are going a little, oh, how would Dora put it - loco?
“What next? Dora the Cheerleader? Dora the fashionista with stylish purse and stilettos? Dora the Pop Star with Hoppin’ Dance Club and ‘Juice’ Bar?” reads an online petition (ipetition.com) started by Lyn Mikel Brown and Sharon Lamb, co-authors of the book “Packaging Girlhood: Rescing Our Daughters from Marketers’ Schemes”
“We can expect it all, because that’s what passes as ‘tween’ in the toy department these days.”
You can understand why the company would want to keep Dora more interesting to a larger age group. Since once Dora fans get into kindergarten, they move on to superheroes or the Jonas Brothers faster than you can say, vamonos .
Which is why Dora, like Strawberry Shortcake and Holly Hobbie before her, has given up furry animals in favor of mom’s charge card.
According to the companies, the new Dora loves clothes (cha-ching!), jewelry (cha-ching!) and technology (cha-ching!). Those are just the accessories. Did I mention Dora the Tween doll will cost $59.99?
It’s sad our little outdoor enthusiast who likes to read maps and cavort with Ugly Trolls grows up to be the Latino Lauren Conrad.
Her adventuresome cousin, Diego, won’t have a growth spurt, thank goodness. He gets to stay and play while his cousin primps and preens.
Dora growing up is one thing, but falling victim to fashion and consumerism isn’t the only stop on the express to womanhood. Can’t she at least play a sport?
Barbie’s 50th anniversary was just celebrated. We’ve endured that plastic self-esteem-buster for five decades - with her impossible proportions and Dream House.
Dora had a better beginning. But in the end, she’s just following in Barbie’s stilettos.
Little Johnny
Little Johnny catches his parents going at it. He yells in, "Hey,
Pop! What are you doin'?"
His father says, "Son, I'm filling your mother's tank."
Johnny says, "Oh, yeah? Well, you better get a model that gets better mileage. The postman filled her this morning."
