Undercover Report
Lingerie Americas VS
Salon International de la Lingerie
by Patricia Fieldwalker
Dear McPete:
First, let me tell you how delighted we are to be included in the photos from the Lingerie Americas show in Feb. Given the conflict between Salon
in Paris and the show in New York, many of our best clients did not manage
to leave their stores just before Valentine's Day so those who could, went
to Paris and passed on the New York show. Many just had to pass on both shows. I was personally committed to my international clients so had to be
in Paris which meant sending a new staff member to work the New York show with my very competent and lovely model, Nanako. They did a great job and
managed to make the best of a very poor situation.
Lingerie Americas does deserve credit for sending out a report of quotes from specialty stores about the timing of the
Feb 07 show. Comments from
buyers were overwhelming critical and will hopefully prevent this from happening again. Some examples of the response:
" Having a lingerie show during the second busiest month of the year for sales is absurd".
"This is absolutely the WORST time. We may not even attend this year. If
we do, we will only be able to do 1/2 or our normal appointments".
"It is an absolute mess to have the show the first two weeks of February. It is our busiest selling time. We will not attend in 2/07".
"The new dates do not make any business sense".
Ouch! a disaster for both buyers and exhibitors that hopefully will not be
repeated says me.
Small specialty shops do not have the staff to split between important selling periods and a major show. Small designer companies cannot split
themselves between two shows with one day apart. Wednesday attendance and
business were not too bad, Thursday was quiet and Friday was a disaster. Given the conflict, the show should have been limited to Wed.
and Thurs. since everyone knew there would be little if any business done the Friday before Valentine's Day. This is an expensive show for both
buyers and exhibitors and it must be financially a good investment for all.
Anyone whose voice has not been heard on this important subject should contact the show organizers and/ or McPete and make their opinion
known. Let's hope the August show will compensate for the disappointing February experience.
Cheers to all and don't forget: .....if Winter comes, can Spring be far behind?

VIP Feelings Designer
Lingerie Awards
The third VIP Feelings Designer Lingerie Awards in Mumbai on February 22, got off to a rousing start and ended on equally incredulous note.
B.D. Somani made a clean sweep of the 3rd VIP Designer Lingerie Award Contest. Fielding seven candidates out
of the twelve in the fray, five made it to the top.
Judges were unanimous in their decision so much so that all the judges met with all the designers and
held the results close to their chest till the very finale. It took everybody by a big surprise. The
winners of this contest are as follows : Ms. Vidhi Shah- 1st Prize, Ms. Vinita Jain -2nd Prize, Ms. Mansi
Shah- 3rd Prize, Ms. Anushree Penekar- 1st runner up, Mr. Anish Aggarwal – 2nd runner up.
Before the start of the contest the day was witness to hectic parleys between the designers and the models to
get the fitting right and their props in place for the contest. On the other hand the organizers were putting
in their last minute efforts in preparing for a memorable show. With the evening lengthening into
night, the hall was reverberating with the thumping remix music as models strutted the creations of
designers sequence after sequence. Interspersed with this were the creations of two designers from the non competitive section. It acted much like the perfume sales man who gives us to smell coffee beans to wipe out the effect of the earlier perfume. The judges too lauded this concept and reiterated that this practice could be followed by many other
organizers in making these competitions more palatable, rather than making it too heavy too digest.
VIP Feelings to burned the runaway with excellent creations in five different sequences, exotic bras,
and exotic bras, sports bras, T-shirt bras and new range of fancy bras. The judges took valuable time in discussing and arriving at a unanimous decision. Earlier Mr. Sanjay Manocha the organizer of this contest reiterated the need for superlative lingerie designers in this country, a bank of creative designers and merchandisers who could carry the mantle of creativity further in this country. He was confident that their exists a market in this country. Mr. Sunil Pathare took it a step further and invited Institutes and to use their factories and their setup for the benefit of students and arrange factory visit. Since lingerie is a complicated garment to construct and requires specialized machinery which many institutes are not equipped themselves. Also he reiterated that the institutes should take the lingerie training quite seriously rather than a module. The industry requires trained professionals in lingerie. All students apart from the winners are being awarded the participation certificates and along with
momentos.

About the contest:

UNDERSTANDING WOMEN
(A MAN'S PERSPECTIVE)
I know I'm not going to understand women.
I'll never understand how you can take boiling hot wax,
pour it onto your upper thigh, rip the hair out by the root,
and still be afraid of a spider.
"Ask Andy"
Andy Weinstock has been in the fabric and textile business all his life, but professionally since 1969.
"I love what I do, selling fabrics around the globe. I've met lots of interesting, creative, dynamic
folks; some have become dear friends. I love to help new businesses find the things they need to become successful. It works for everyone."
You can ask Andy questions about Fabrics at
Andy@mcpetesez.com
Dear Andy,
Do you know where I can find a domestic manufacturer of high quality, lightweight micro fibers. Something that is similar to a Willy Herman or a Piave Maitex. Are there any.
For example: I am looking for a 75% poly/25% lycra in 85 to 125 grams weight.
Your help is greatly appreciated.
Richard Paone
Richard: are you looking for Yarn as in "fibers" or are you looking for "fabrics"?
We visited your web site, and it appears you are looking for fabrics.
With so much textile ( and other types of) manufacturers making their products off shore, most of the fabric companies have closed or moved off shore as well.
Plan on attending a wholesale fabric show, to find the fabric (or yarns) you need. Visit
www.fabricshow.com.
Good Luck,
Andy
