Raise?
For many years I worked as a receptionist and switchboard operator at a busy company. After a good annual review, my supervisor told me I was up for a raise, pending approval of the vice president.
A month later, my supervisor called me into his office and told me the VP had refused to approve the raise. His reason? I clearly wasn't doing my job. Every time he saw me, I was either chatting with someone in the lobby or talking on the phone.
Q4 Puts Macy's Back in Profit
A fall in its full year sales failed to stop Macy’s report
a swing back into profit after what the company's CEO described as a "clear cut improvement" in performance in
the fourth quarter.
Macy's reported diluted earnings per share of 83 cents per share for the full year, compared to a loss of $11.40 per
share a year earlier.
The company's total full year sales totaled $23.489bn, down 5.6% on 2008.
On a same-store basis, Macy's sales were down 5.3%. This was better than the company's initial guidance, provided at
the beginning of the year, for sales to be down between 6 and 8%.
In the fourth quarter, earnings were $1.10 per diluted share, compared to a loss of $11.33 per diluted share in
the same period in 2008.
Sales in the quarter fell 1.1% to $7.849bn, with same-store sales down 0.8%.
"Our company initiated unprecedented change in 2009 as we adopted a unified
organization structure and rolled out our My Macy's localization strategy amid the worst economic
environment in decades.
"Despite these obstacles, we improved our profitability over the previous year through better-than-expected sales,
improved gross margins and reduced expenses," said Terry J Lundgren, chairman, president and CEO.
"The fourth quarter represented a clear-cut improvement in sales trends from earlier in the year, driven by success
from My Macy's, a 26.6% increase in online sales and a significant rebound at Bloomingdale's.
"We outperformed most of our major competitors in the all-important holiday season."
Looking ahead, the company said that while there still is uncertainty in the economic environment, it is assuming
same-store sales growth in the range of 1% to 2% in fiscal 2010.
Guidance for earnings per diluted share in fiscal 2010 is $1.55 to $1.60. Capital expenditures for the year are
expected to be $550m.
Space Underwear Now Available
Remember the "long duration underwear" tested out by Japanese astronaut Koichi Wakata on board the ISS last year? Now you can buy your very own. The specially designed undies and other clothing called “J-ware” are on sale now for 10,500 yen or about $115 USD. J-ware is treated with antibacterial and deodorizing materials, so they can be worn for long periods of and are resistant to odors. "(For) two months I was wearing these underwear and there was no smell and nobody complained,” said Wakata. “I think that new J-ware underwear is very good for myself and my colleagues."
Here's the English translation of the J-ware website.
In addition to odor control, the clothes are designed to absorb water, insulate the body and dry quickly. They also are flame-resistant and anti-static.
Typically, clothes can only be worn for a few days in space, and especially the clothing worn by astronauts as they exercise. Since there's no
laundromat in space, the clothing is discarded as garbage.
Astronaut Takao Doi, who flew with a shuttle crew in early 2009 to deliver Japan's Kibo laboratory to the station, exercised as much as his crewmates, but his clothes stayed dry.
Wakata's clothes include long- and short-sleeved shirts, pants, shorts and underwear. Special socks have a separate pouch for the big toes so the astronauts can use their feet like an extra pair of hands, helpful for anchoring themselves on the floor while doing work on the station.
