Bra Recycling For
Research
Hertfordshire residents are asked to deposit unwanted bras in new pink bins.
Bright pink bins are being installed at some recycling sites in Hertfordshire so women can drop off unwanted bras which can be reused.
Some of the underwear will be sent to women in developing countries while other items will be recycled to raise money for the Breast Cancer Campaign.
The scheme has been launched by Hertsmere Borough Council for women living in Bushey and Radlett.
The idea is to reduce items going to landfill but also to boost recycling.
Jean Heywood, environment portfolio holder, said: "Next time you pop out to the shops or the gym, or go to your local recycling centre, take your old bras with you and pop them in one of the pink banks, you really can't miss them."
Bras must be put in plastic bags before they are deposited in the pink recycling bins.
Streep Landed Roles
By Stuffing Bra
Hollywood icon Meryle Streep made sure she didn't stuff up her acting dreams - by padding out her bra in a bid to land roles.
The double Oscar-winner admits playing the sexy card to catch the eye of casting directors - boosting her assets to increase her chance of film offers.
And her efforts didn't go unnoticed - her fake curves persuaded late movie maker Sydney Pollack to cast her in critically acclaimed Out of Africa.
She explains, "I have cheated to get a part. The first time I was on Broadway years ago. Before the audition I filled my 32DD bra cups with paper towels.
"I got the part! I did it again to Sydney Pollack for Out of Africa. I'd heard he didn't think I was sexy enough so I filled them up again."

Calida Posted 30.7%
2008 Decline
Swiss underwear company Calida Group has posted an
annual net profit of CHF10.6m (US$9.06m) for the "economically difficult" full-year 2008, declining in
comparison with the previous year by 30.7%.
After a 1% decline in sales to CHF229.6m, due to currency effects, the group achieved an operating
profit (EBIT) of CHF15.9m.
The company said its Calida and Aubade stores recorded a positive development, and that the Swiss market held
up with solid growth better than the export markets.
The Calida brand achieved sales in the reporting year of CHF158.5m, representing growth of 0.7%, but Aubade
recorded a slight decline of 1.2%.
Felix Sulzberger, CEO of the Calida Group, said: "The economically difficult year has shown that the
strategic focus of our two brands Calida and Aubade on expanding the retail networks and making the business
model more flexible with production overheads as low as possible is proving to be the right one. Despite
difficult market conditions, we are going to continue working on implementation of our long-term
objectives".
Calida said it reacted with determination to the early signs of the impending economic crisis in early 2008.
The company said sales plans were adapted and the procurement plans reduced for its autumn/winter
collection 2008. It therefore ended with significantly lower inventories than those at the end of 2007.
The company added that dessous / lingerie proved to be more susceptible to the crisis than daywear and
particularly nightwear.
In its outlook for 2009, the company said despite strong preconditions, its future is nevertheless
associated with major uncertainties. "There are signs that consumer demand will weaken further in 2009, with
a direct impact on the sales and profit of the group," it added.
Fraternity Underwear
Walk
Some fraternity brothers at Truman State University took a frigid early morning walk for a good cause.
The men of Sigma Tau Gamma took “The Walk: from here to there in our underwear." The group walked six miles from the north edge of Kirksville to their fraternity house. All the money raised from their chilly walk will go to the Northeast Missouri Association for Citizens with Disabilities.
“We've been doing it for 40 years, and the guys originally just decided, you know, we like to keep the money locally and do something fun, so this is what they had in mind when they thought of fun,” said Mike McKenzie, Coordinator of “The Walk.”
The fraternity raised about $2000 by getting local businesses to sponsor the walk. They also collected funds from their professors at Truman, and by going door to door around town.

Kool Keith Launches
Lingerie & Porn Line
Rapper Kool Keith is launching his own line of pornography films and lingerie - because he's sick of the lacy underwear actresses wear in adult movies.
The hip-hop star is the new CEO of KK Fashion and he hopes to inject a new sense of style into the world of adult film.
He says, "I'm doing my clothing line and my porno line. I'm tired of the porn - even in amateur movies and stuff like that - I'm tired of the apparel. It's time for new apparel. It's time for other things, and other co-ordinations in fashion."
But that's not all - the MC is also branching out into making explicit movies himself, via his KK Films brand, and is appealing to wannabe porn stars to get in touch.
He adds, "I'm looking for up and coming talent, instead of all the normal talent that you always see out there - talent that we get monotonous with, the same girls all in the same magazines, porn boxes. I'm tryin' to work on upcoming talent. That's my thing; I'm gonna scoop some ethnic talent, and take it to another
level.
Gap to Close 100
Stores
Gap Inc is to close about 100 stores in 2009 after
posting a 7.9% drop in fourth quarter profit to US$243m.
The company was hit by falls in comparable store sales in all its North American retail divisions, including
Gap, Banana Republic and Old Navy, as well as in its international businesses.
Fourth quarter net sales were down 12.8% to $4.1bn, driven by an overall drop of 14% in comparable store
sales.
In North America, the Gap chain's comps were down 13%, while Banana Republic declined 15% and Old Navy 17%.
International comps fell 4%, but the company's online revenues were up 10% at $319m.
For the full year, sales fell 8.2% to $14.5bn, with comps down 12%.
Gap North America's comparable store sales fell 8%, while for Banana Republic and Old Navy, the declines
were 10% and 17% respectively.
International comparable store sales were down 4%, while full-year online sales were up 14% to $1.03bn.
Full year profit was up 16% to $967m and the fourth quarter profit was $243m.
"Our ability to drive healthy margins and achieve significant cost savings helped us deliver earnings
growth of 16% over the course of a very challenging year," said Glenn Murphy, Gap chairman and CEO.
"With nearly $2bn cash on hand and virtually no debt, we have a strong foundation that will allow our
globally recognized brands to compete effectively this year as we navigate the current environment."
Gap signaled that the company would continue to cut costs in 2009, restricting capital spending and
closing about 100 under-performing Gap stores during the year.
The company is to open about 50 new stores, focusing on outlet locations and international expansion.

Ban on Lingerie
Salesmen Considered
The Ministry of Business and Trade is considering a law to ban salesmen from sections dealing with women’s undergarments in stores in Qatar, local newspapers report.
It said women feel greatly embarrassed to deal with salesmen in the undergarments sections.
A ministry official said only Saudi Arabia enforces such a ban in the region.
The director of the Doha municipality, Ibrahim Abdullah al-Malky, said officials have advised stores managements to post women employees for this purpose. But the problem can be tackled only through a law he said.
Model Sues Over
Catwalk
Fall
Model and one-time reality TV contestant Sarah Welch is suing the producers of a 2007 Hollywood fashion show after falling through a hole in the runway.
Welch fell straight through the gap, created by a martial arts star who performed before her, during a show at the Mondrian Hotel on 18 October 2007.
In a lawsuit filed in a Santa Monica, California court in early February of this year, the model, who once appeared on dating series The Bachelor, claims she suffered "great injuries to her body, shock and injuries to her nervous system."
She is seeking unspecified damages for negligence.
