Textile Factory Collapsed
A four-story textiles factory in Bangladesh’s capital, Dhaka, has
collapsed, killing at least 16 people and injuring 50.
The incident occurred on February 25, just two days after a textile
mill fire in the port city of Chittagong left 54 workers dead.
The Phoenix mill building in the Mahakhali area is reported to have crumbled in the middle of renovation work. However, no specific
cause has yet been reported.
Emergency services fear many workers could still be trapped under rubble. It is reported that 150-200 people were in the factory at
the time it collapsed.
Although Bangladesh relies on textiles as its main export earner, the industry is renowned for its lax safety standards.

Electric
News
Clubwear and exotic apparel manufacturer Electric Lingerie has announced they will launch their 2006 Costumes Collection at the upcoming International Halloween Costume & Party Show in Rosemont, IL (March 10-13).
The long awaited catalog - which will come pre-packed with a full-sized poster, “sold here” decals, custom order forms and a cd-rom – will feature 50 brand new styles including: “The Full Service Waitress” - a sexy take on 50’s era drive-in servers, “Backseat Driver” – a chauffeur’s uniform with boyshorts, hat and a customizable sign, and “Want Some, Honey?” – a unique bumblebee design featuring a ruffled miniskirt and skimpy tri-top. Most of the new designs will be available as one and two-piece sets, offering options to those customers looking for something a bit more conservative.
“The new concepts like ‘Chinese Take-Out’, ‘La Masquerade’, ‘The Gambler’ and ‘Prom Queen’ are going to get us a lot of attention this Halloween season… with so many choices in the market, consumer’s are looking for something a little different. Of course we’re also offering updated versions of the classics - schoolgirl (5 styles), nurse (6 styles), French maid (2 styles), pussycat (5 styles) – but we have really focused on creating more fashion forward, contemporary designs. We’ve also included the costume accessories (hats, badges, etc.), which makes it easier for consumers to complete the look”, said Brian Wagner, Electric’s Director of Operations. “Our packaging, which we have always been known for, will surely set us apart in any store… the artwork will have to be seen to be believed! “Based on initial response to the catalog, we are expecting another big year at Electric.”
In other company news, The Blue Line, Electric’s new offering for men, is
slated to launch in April, at the International Lingerie Show, held at the Rio in Las Vegas. Previously mentioned in Body Magazine, this packaged line consists of over 90 items for men, from traditional boxer-briefs and boxer/tank sets, to more outrageous novelty styles like “The Pink Flamingo”, ranging in price from $4-$9. “Our customers really appreciate what we do and they have been asking us for sometime to develop an inexpensive line for men that is current and fresh, and most importantly, wearable… the result is The Blue Line. The release of this catalog takes us one step closer to our goal of being THE one-stop-shop for sexy apparel and intimates,” said Wagner.
Electric Lingerie has also announced the hiring of a new National Sales Manager, Bryan Gamza. A graduate of the University of Hartford, Gamza was lured to Electric from the corporate world, where he worked in account acquisitions at Fleet Bank and then Morgan Stanley. An experienced salesman and manager, Bryan Gamza will be focusing on increasing distribution, developing and training the company’s sales force, and building on relationships with customers, both new and old. “We are happy to have Bryan on the team, as he has already proven in just a few weeks how important he is to the growth of the company. He is aggressive and hard working, and his commitment and loyalty to our brand make him the ideal person for the position” said Brian Wagner.
“I have watched Electric Lingerie grow to what it is today, and I am glad to be working with such a strong brand. I’m just getting started, but I anticipate a huge year for Electric… It’s an exciting time for the company, and I’m anxious to be a part of it,” said new National Sales Manager Bryan Gamza.
Electric Lingerie is a manufacturer of high quality intimate apparel, clubwear and costumes. Based in New York City, Electric Lingerie is sold in 22 countries around the world, offering direct distribution via a Hong Kong office. For sales inquiries, please contact Bryan Gamza

EU's Shoe Tariffs
The European Union's trade commissioner, Peter Mandelson, has announced plans to impose tariffs this spring to slow the flow of leather shoes from China and Vietnam into Europe, but he also warned European retailers that they should absorb the higher cost of goods.
Over several months, Europe will phase in import duties of 19.4% percent on some Chinese-made footwear and duties of nearly 16.8% percent on some Vietnamese-made shoes, beginning in early April.
While criticizing China and Vietnam for "state-supported dumping," Mr. Mandelson also accused European retailers of failing to pass on the benefits of low-priced goods made in Asia and hinting that sharp price rises in coming months would be evidence of gouging.
That suggests, Mr. Mandelson said, that "there's plenty of margin for them to absorb this nominal antidumping duty, without detriment to their consumers."
By casting the retailers in a negative light, Mr. Mandelson appeared to be seeking to spread the blame for any price rises or supply problems that might result from the new tariffs, as occurred in last year's "bra wars." At the time, clothing manufacturers in southern Europe sought quotas on Chinese exports, saying they were destroying the European textile industry. But retailers suffered as Chinese-made undergarments and sweaters piled up at ports.
In a first for an antidumping case, Mr. Mandelson is planning to raise tariffs by only small amounts at first, to avoid antagonizing China or creating havoc for footwear buyers and sellers.
Mr. Mandelson said the measures would affect only 9 of every 100 pairs of shoes in Europe, and just 2% of total trade between Europe and China.

At the Doctor's Office
A gorgeous young redhead goes into the doctor's office and said that her body hurt wherever she touched it.
"Impossible!" says the doctor. "Show me."
The redhead took her finger, pushed on her left breast and screamed, then she pushed her elbow and screamed in even more. She pushed her knee and screamed; likewise she pushed her ankle and screamed. Everywhere she touched made her scream.
The doctor said, "You're not really a redhead, are you?
"Well, no" she said, "I'm actually a blonde."
"I thought so," the doctor said. "Your finger is broken."
Moss Better Then Before
Disgraced supermodel Kate Moss is preparing to sign a lucrative contract with fashion giant Calvin Klein--a deal which reportedly will boost her earnings to almost double those before her recent drug scandal.
The new deal is thought to be worth close to $2.6 million and comes just six months after photographs of Moss allegedly snorting cocaine threatened to end her career.
A string of top companies, including Chanel, Burberry and H&M, axed the model from their advertising campaigns after British newspaper Daily Mirror published the incriminating photos of Moss alongside her then-boyfriend Pete Doherty in September.
But the catwalk beauty has since compensated for the loss of these contracts by signing a number of multi-million dollar deals with Longchamps, Bulgari, Stella McCartney and Virgin Mobile.
It has been reported that Fashion house Burberry is also reversing their decision, offering the 32-year-old style icon $1.8 million for another annual signing.
These new deals will bring Moss' total earnings to $17 million, compared to just $10.3 million before the drug scandal.

More Women Come Forward
La Senza is testing one of their best-selling bras after more women
complained of being burned by the product.
Businesswoman Karen Macartney came forward last month with complaints that she was left with the equivalent of third-degree burns by the adhesive tapes used to fix the
Dreamshaper.
Now more women have come forward to complain of the same problem.
Beautician Pauline Duncan, 38, from Aberdeen, and riding instructor Gillian Bowie, 22, from
Milngavie, near Glasgow, say they were in agony after
wearing the bra just once.
A La Senza spokeswoman said : "We are commissioning independent technical tests on the tapes.
"We are talking to the customers who have had problems to gather information on their experience."
The company is not withdrawing the product but say they are considering warning labels.
Hyosung Confesses to
Deceptive Accounting
South Korean textile maker Hyosung Corp has confessed to deceptive
accounting over a five-year period, during which time it inflated its earnings by KRW250.3bn (US$157.4m).
In a regulatory filing, Hyosung said that between 2001 and 2005 it reported that its overseas operations posted a profit when in fact
they turned in a net loss.
The company also failed to record KRW250.3bn won in equity investment losses in its books, while overestimating its capital
and assets by KRW351.1bn and KRW100.7bn respectively.
Hyosung intends to show the corrected figures in its 2005 financial statements.

Warnaco's Income Dropped 42%
Warnaco Group Inc., whose brands include Warner's bras, Speedo swimwear, and Calvin Klein underwear, reported a 42% in quarterly profit, blaming lower sales, higher selling and administrative costs, and a sharply higher pension expense.
Manhattan-based Warnaco reported net income of $9.4 million, or 20 cents per share, in the fourth quarter, versus a profit of $16.2 million, or 35 cents per share a year ago. Revenue declined 3.2% to $362.5 million.
Pension expense totaled $1 million, reversing pension income of $7.8 million in the year-ago quarter.
Warnaco said the quarter's results fell short of its own expectations. The company warned in January it would miss its full-year sales and gross profit targets due to weak sales of swimwear, jeans and other items.
For 2006, Warnaco projected revenue growth in the low 20% range and operating margin growth in the double-digit range. It also forecast its recently completed acquisition of various Calvin Klein businesses in Europe and Asia would add to earnings per share.
