Lands' End to Reorganize and
Axe 375 Jobs
Lands’ End, the apparel retailer owned by Sears, Roebuck and Co, is to cut 375 jobs amid a restructuring of its business
operations “to respond to changing customer shopping habits.”
The company said its Cross Plains call center, which employs nearly 200 people, would close on June 5, and that another 175
jobs at its Dodgeville headquarters and call center have already been terminated.
The company said its decision was based on declining catalogue sales and the fact that more customers are using the Internet
to place orders.
Land’s End is also reorganizing its merchandising, design, inventory, quality and sourcing resources to work across all
departments instead of specializing in children’s, women’s and men’s apparel. The Internet operations will be integrated into
each functional area.
Sears bought Lands’ End for $1.9 billion nearly three years ago and is in the midst of being taken over talks by Kmart
Holdings Inc.

Dolce and Gabbana Split
Italian designer duo Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana have ended their 19-year relationship but say they will continue to
run their renowned fashion label.
“On a professional level we are still together,” Dolce told the Italian media.
“We work together wonderfully well, we have a very strong understanding. We have a very strong love which ties us to each
other.”
The fashion label, launched in 1985, is a favorite with celebrities including Madonna, Kylie Minogue and
Beyonce.

surf wear label Aztec, said revenue rose 2.9% to $267.025 million.
CEO Greg Milne said an aggressive program of store growth and improved margins had helped position Brazin for continued
growth and expansion.
“Growth will continue through further store openings, improving performance of existing stores and through acquisitions,” he
said. “We remain on track for our long term objective to be the leading retail conglomerate dominating key market segments.”

France's Textile Industry Against EU’s Tsunami Aid Measures
French textile industry groups yesterday described the European
Commission’s decision to drop EU trade tariffs to tsunami-hit countries as a stab in the back to French jobs.
The EC has rescheduled the start of new trade tariffs to 1 April in order to help countries affected by December’s Asian
Tsunami.
Import tariffs will drop from 17 to 13.5% for Thai and Indian shoes, and from 12 to 9.5% for Indian textiles.

Chinese Textile and Apparel
Exports Increase 14%
China’s textile and apparel exports in January 2005 were up 14% over the same period last year to $3.74 billion according to
figures from the Customs General Administration.
Export duties on textile and apparel products were more than CNY200 million in January, a report in the China Securities
Journal said.
The imposition of export duties of between CNY0.2 and CNY0.5 per unit on 148 textile and apparel items from 1 January had
little impact on their businesses some exporters said.

Ultra-Fine Cellulose-Based
Fiber Developed
Toray Industries Inc has developed new technology for making an ultra-fine
fiber from plant cellulose, which it is targeting at ladies’ formal wear and luxury underwear applications.
The company says the new cellulose-based material is glossy and can absorbing moisture.
Fabrics based on the new fiber are due to be unveiled in 2006.
The new technology involves processing the cellulose so that it melts when heated. It is then injected into conventional
synthetic fiber spinnerets to make fibers with diameters of 5-30 microns and complex cross-sections.
Valentine's Day Bash
Valentine's Day in London was chilly, but that didn't stop temperatures soaring at a glitzy party in Café de Paris. Indeed, the atmosphere was positively sizzling inside the venue as lingerie firm Agent Provocateur used
the most romantic day of the year to show off its latest creations.
Vivienne Westwood and her husband Andreas Kronthaler were color coordinated in a pink silk gown and skin-tight body respectively, with the iconic designer
accessorizing her outfit with a pair of cheeky little horns. Sir Elton John's partner David Furnish had also adopted the pink theme,
sporting a vibrant-hued jacket to meet up with artist Sam Taylor Wood and Little Britain star David Walliams at the event.
It was cover girl Dita Von Teese who stole the show, however, in a spectacular lacy nightgown with feathered skirt. The burlesque model, who once declared, "I'm the woman your mother warned you about", certainly lived up to her reputation as the raciest name in showbiz.
Needless to say, the cutting-edge lingerie line put on a suitably flirtatious display, presenting a host of raunchy new designs to the assembled guests.

Federated Department Stores Inc, which operates the Macy's and Bloomingdale's store chains, has posted a slump in 2004

Jim &Edna
Jim and Edna were both patients in a mental hospital. One day while they were walking past the hospital swimming pool, Jim suddenly jumped into the
deep end. He sank to the bottom of the pool and stayed there.
Edna promptly jumped in to save him. She swam to the bottom and pulled Jim out. When the Head Nurse Director became aware of Edna's heroic act she immediately ordered her to be discharged from the hospital, as she now considered her to be mentally
stable.
When she went to tell Edna the news she said, "Edna, I have good news and bad news. The good news is you're being discharged; since you were able to rationally respond to a crisis by jumping in and saving the life of
another patient, I have concluded that your act displays sound mindedness.
The bad news is Jim, the patient you saved, hung himself right after you saved him with his bathrobe belt in the bathroom.
I am so sorry, but he's dead."
Edna replied "He didn't hang himself, I put him there to dry. How soon can I go home?"

Cross Dressing Underwear Thief
A man who dressed up as a woman so he could steal women's underwear from a store in Kawai, Nara Prefecture, was arrested after an official saw through his disguise and alerted police.
The man, Hisao Okumura, 56, was arrested on suspicion of theft after he allegedly sneaked into a supermarket in Kawai and stole three items of underwear priced at about 13,000 yen on Jan. 30.
Investigators said Okumura dressed himself up in a long hair wig, a miniskirt and boots before entering the women's underwear sales section of the supermarket. After selecting three items of underwear, he allegedly took them into a changing room and hid them in his coat before exiting the store and driving off.
However, Okumura wasn't wearing any makeup, and a security official who realized he was a man and thought he was acting strangely followed him and took note of the license plate of his vehicle.
After it was confirmed that three items of underwear were missing from the store, the official contacted police, who tracked down Okumura.
Okumura reportedly admitted to the allegations against him when questioned over the theft.
"I wanted underwear," he was quoted. The stolen underwear was reportedly found at his home.
