    Tefron's Sewing Plant
    Damaged by Fire
Seamless underwear maker Tefron Ltd on Tuesday said shipment of some goods may be delayed after a fire damaged its main sewing plant in Jordan.
The company, whose customers include Victoria's Secret, Target, Warnaco/Calvin Klein, The Gap, Banana Republic, Nike, Mervyn's, Patagonia and Adidas, said the fire resulted in loss of inventory and raw materials, and damage to plant and machinery.
Production is now being transferred to other facilities.

       Some Countries Cheaper
    Than China For Clothes

China, as many predicted, has dropped its clothing prices sharply since the US, EU and Canada removed quotas against it on January 1. But competitor countries – all a lot nearer its main markets are still cheaper according to post-quota data.
An analysis of the EU’s import license scheme in the February edition of ‘The Source,' a monthly apparel industry newsletter published by UK-based apparel sourcing consultancy Clothesource, shows that by 18 February 2005, clothes licensed for import from China into the EU were, on average, 21% lower than in 2004.
For some garments, prices have gone up and some have dropped down 66%. But in hardly a single case has China yet matched the prices competitor countries have long been offering.
The price cuts are much smaller than the cuts of up to 70% Chinese exporters gave their anorak prices in 2002, when the EU removed anorak quotas. China cut its bra prices to the US by over 50% when quotas came off bra sales to the US at the same time.
“China was always a relatively expensive place to buy clothes from,” said Mike Flanagan, Clothesource CEO. “For instance, in autumn 2004, T-shirts arriving in the EU from China were 168% more expensive than from Bangladesh, which had no quota limit and wasn’t subject to import duty."
"Chinese T-shirts for shipping to Europe are now 35% cheaper than they were a year ago. But that still makes them twice the price of T-shirts from Bangladesh. And China’s still being undercut by other countries in suits, coats, trousers, underwear, dresses, blouses, shirts, sweaters, socks – every apparel category except formal men’s jackets. "
"And not just by Bangladesh. Depending on the garments, you can find better value than China in Sri Lanka, India, Malaysia, Egypt. In fact, virtually every country in the world undercuts China on something. Even EU neighbors like Romania, Turkey and Morocco. "
"Indeed socks from Poland are now half the price of Chinese socks." Does this mean that China doesn’t pose the threat everyone has claimed to the apparel industries of lower-income countries? "
“China certainly remains a threat and it’s still early days,” says Flanagan. “But it’s by no means the cheapest country in the world to make clothes. And most of its competitors have import duty concessions from the EU denied to China"
"Buyers aren’t just flocking to China for its prices: it can offer speed of turnaround and nimbleness it’s not easy to find everywhere else. China’s certainly a threat to other manufacturers. "
"But, unless it cuts its prices a lot more, it’s not going to dominate the cheap end of the market."
“And reports of the death of the rest of the world’s apparel industry are very much exaggerated. Socks cost Europeans 72% more in China than in Egypt. The Chinese are going to have to sharpen their act a lot more before many Europeans are going to go all that way to pay twice as much as they can in their own backyard.”

Gap's Preliminary Q4 Earnings
US apparel giant Gap Inc has reported a preliminary earnings increase for the fourth quarter of 2004, boosted by cost reductions and strong sales at its Banana Republic business.
Total earnings for the period were $370 million compared to $356m in 2003 the company said on Thursday, while net sales stayed static from last-year’s $4.9 billion.
Fourth-quarter same-store sales dropped 3%.  The up market Banana Republic division was the only Gap business to report a net sales rise, from $671m to $702m. The chain’s same-store sales dropped 1%.
US Gap stores saw static same-store sales and steady net sales of $1.6bn due to sluggish custom and poorly balanced stock.
The Old Navy chain saw same-store sales drop 4% due to overbought inventory.  Gap International’s same-store sales fell 8%.  Full-year 2004 earnings increased 11% to $1.1bn.

Upfront Streetwear Trade Show
     Launched in London
A new directional streetwear trade show is being launched in London on 3-4 July 2005 at The Barbican.
Opening ahead of the other UK shows, Upfront aims to provide a platform for the most creative, inspirational and sought-after
global street and sports brands.
Its organizers say the event is already supported by a growing list of retailers and brands, and that Upfront endeavors to
fill the gap left by 40 degrees and attract new international buyers – and business – back to London

Seardel Up 43%
South Africa’s biggest clothing and textile producer, Seardel Investment Corp Ltd, has posted a 43% increase in headline earnings per share for the six months ended December 31, 2004.
Attributable net profit, however, dropped to ZAR28.2 million from ZAR37.8m, while revenue grew 1.5% to ZAR2.01 billion.
Seardel said that the strength of the rand had encouraged imports from countries such as China, but said it was doubtful the headline earnings increase would continue now that have quotas have ended.

Intimate London: Maintains
              Its Position

Intimate London Body & Beach: 13th – 15th February 2005, welcomed its highest number of buyers yet, 3,632, an increase of nearly 4% from the previous February event: Maintaining its position as the UK’s most progressive Intimate Apparel event.
Colocated with Pure and coinciding with London Fashion Week: Buyers and press from all over the country and abroad attended to see the latest fashions and to catch a glimpse of must have lingerie collections shown on the impressive Intimate Catwalk, which ran twice a day
The show organizers presented an exclusive event: The first ever UK Gruppo La Perla Catwalk Show, presenting Underwear, Swimwear and Ready to Wear
Exhibitors were delighted with the quality of buyers from both stand alone independents and the larger department stores: Philippa Bradley (representative of Pleasure State in The UK) commented: “I have had a fantastic time, I could not have wished for a better show, I have been extremely busy on all three days of the event, and have met with both the independents and department stores…I am thrilled at the response Pleasure State has had”

“This February Intimate London Body & Beach has surpassed all of our expectations. Aside from a lull in traffic during Valentine’s Day we saw tremendous buyer interest on our stand. Our major European show is Salon de la Lingerie in Paris but Intimate London produced almost the same level of buyers. We saw a lot buyer’s crossing over from Pure and this allowed us to experiment selling lingerie as outerwear. We intend to have an even bigger presence at this show in July/August and in February next year.” Samia Khan, National Sales Director, Shirley of Hollywood
Peter Murray of the La Perla Fashion Group commented “We are very pleased with the new accounts we have taken on, including accounts from Pure. We managed to have meetings with essential buyers that would not have taken place if we were not here, and it has been a very worthwhile show”
Steve Hazlehurst from Panache said “It has been a very good show for us, and has been excellent for southern based independents…the catwalk shows were brilliant…and I am happy we were part of the show”
“The catwalk show definitely added more excitement to the show, and for me it brought customers to my stand…so a big success. I had a very successful show, and opened new accounts with both departments and Independents” Debra Winstanley, Maisie & Lilly
New brands were also enthusiastic: Malini Johnson of Malini USA commented “The show has been excellent for new contacts and overseas orders; I have had a lot of interest and am looking forward to see what comes of it all, my polka dot garment on the catwalk gained a lot of interest…it looked fantastic”

Sonia Summan, Sales Director, Madame V “This is the first show we have ever taken part in, and I can honestly say we will definitely be coming back next season. The event was excellent for us for both sales and press, we opened a number of new accounts from both independents and department stores, we are very pleased with the out come. We didn’t manage to get samples in on time for the catwalk (although we wish we had) as it was an excellent show…Next time”
Buyers were also very enthusiastic: Susan Powell, Proprietor of A Touch of Class in Lichfield, Staffordshire commented “It was a superb show and it is the only time I get to see the La Perla brands… and this along with all the new designers on offer make it a fantastic event”
Karen Poole from Top Drawers commented “The show is very well organized, with a nice mix of brands from established and new designers, the catwalk was fantastic, and I really enjoyed the show”
Show Director Robert Thomas commented “We are delighted that the fashion catwalks this season have been so well received by exhibitors and buyers, it is just part of our ongoing investment in the intimate apparel industry. It is also gratifying to see how well the collaboration between ourselves and the Pure exhibition has worked this year”
The dates for the next seasons Intimate London Body & Beach are 31st July-2nd August 2005

In Three Words
A woman was sitting at a bar enjoying an after work cocktail with her girlfriends when an exceptionally tall, handsome, extremely sexy middle-aged man entered.
He was so striking that the woman could not take her eyes off him.
The man noticed her overly attentive stare and walked directly toward her. (As all men will.)
Before she could offer her apologies for so rudely staring, he leaned over and whispered to her," I'll do anything, absolutely anything, that you want me to do, no matter how kinky, for $20.00......on one condition."
(There are always conditions!)
Flabbergasted, the woman asked what the condition was. The man replied," You have to tell me what you want me to do in just three words."
The woman considered his proposition for a moment, then slowly removed a $20 bill from her purse, which she pressed into the man's hand along with her address. She looked deeply into his eyes, and slowly, and meaningfully said .  "Clean my house."
