Frederick's Delivers Q3 Profit
Lingerie company Frederick’s of Hollywood delivered the
company’s first quarterly profit since revamping its corporate strategy – but only just.
The company’s net profit of US$0.2m in the three months to April 24, compared to a net loss of $2.1m in the same period
last year, but sales remained depressed.
Net revenues dipped 7.2% to $43.4m, with store sales down 8.5%, comparable store sales falling 7.7% and direct sales
edging down 2.8%. Wholesale revenues decreased 11.7%.
Frederick’s chairman and CEO Thomas Lynch said of the results: “We delivered our first quarterly profit since
beginning our strategic turnaround, despite the impact of reduced consumer spending on discretionary items.”

Taiwan & China Agree on
Trade Deal
Taiwan and China are set to remove or lower tariffs on a range of items, including textile products, as part of a
wide-ranging trade agreement agreed on June 13.
While talks are still needed to finalize and sign the pact – expected later this month or early July – the two sides say
they have made substantial progress in setting out the basic text of the ‘Cross-Strait Economic Cooperation Framework
Agreement.
The deal covers trade, investment, economic co-operation, and the first “early harvest” lists that detail the products that
will see their tariffs reduced or removed.
Both sides have committed to “gradually reduce or eliminate barriers to trade and investment between them, and create
fair trade and investment environment,” the Straits Exchange Foundation said in a statement.
Local media reports suggest China has agreed to offer tariff exemptions or reductions on 500 products from Taiwan and that
Taiwan will open its market to between 100 and 200 industrial items from China. Tariff reductions for textiles could be
80%.

BRAvo Event
OmniMount, the Phoenix-based A/V mounting and furniture manufacturer and 30-year veteran of the consumer electronics industry, now has another designation: Bra Recycling Ambassador. In the culmination of a month-long bra recycling event, the company announced that their effort raised 1,550 bras for donation to The Bra Recyclers. According to the Arizona-based textile-recycling firm, OmniMount’s BRAvo Event is the largest bra drive they’ve had since the company’s inception in 2008. As a show of gratitude, Elaine Birks-Mitchell, the CEO of The Bra Recyclers, awarded OmniMount with a certificate designating it a Bra Recycling Ambassador.
The company’s BRAvo campaign was designed to combine the company’s commitment to recycling with its award-winning community service. The initiative kicked off on Friday, April 30th, with employees, corporate partners and members of the community in attendance — and a public commitment to collect 1,000 bras for donation. A custom-built bra house, courtesy of the local custom commercial millwork company Rulapaugh’s, was stationed outside OmniMount’s corporate headquarters over the last month for daily donations from employees, community members and from care packages sent in by supporters all over the country.
On Tuesday, June 1st, employees and members of the community gathered together to celebrate the success of the effort and announce the final bra count. While weekly prizes had been given to lucky donors via random weekly drawings — both from physical donations and from those that spread the news via their Twitter networks — the crowd was eager to hear which lucky bra recycler would win the grand prize: a 42-inch LG LCD TV and OmniMount mount of their choice. Employees and other guests formed an assembly line to load the boxes of bras into the Bra Recycling van, as Stephanie Snow of Phoenix, Arizona celebrated remotely that her name was randomly chosen making her the winner of the grand prize.
Due to its success and teambuilding benefits, the company plans to make this event an annual one.

N Brown Group Acquires
Figleaves
Home shopping company N Brown Group has purchased online lingerie retailer Figleaves.com for £11.5m.
Figleaves forecasts turnover for the year to June 2010 of £23m. It offers more than 100 brands and attracts 1.2m customers to the site each month. The business delivers to over 100 countries including the US.
N Brown will work with the existing management team to integrate and grow the business while identifying cross-selling opportunities from its other clothing and footwear ranges.
N Brown’s CEO Alan White said, “We’re thrilled to welcome Figleaves to our portfolio of brands and are very excited about this acquisition, which strengthens our position as the UK’s largest online retailer of lingerie. It also demonstrates our commitment to continue to expand the ecommerce proportion of our business and to extend our product offers and customer base.”
Here's a Plan
About 2 years ago my wife and I were on a cruise through the western Mediterranean aboard a Princess ship. At dinner we noticed an elderly lady sitting alone along the rail of the grand stairway in the main dining room. I also noticed that all the staff, ships officers, waiters, busboys, etc., all seemed very familiar with this lady. I asked our waiter who the lady was, expecting to be told she owned the line, but he said he only knew that she had been on board for the last four cruises, back to back.
As we left the dining room one evening I caught her eye and stopped to say hello. We chatted and I said, "I understand you've been on this ship for the last four cruises." She replied, "Yes, that's true." I stated, "I don't understand" and she replied, without a pause, "It's cheaper than a nursing home."
So, there will be no nursing home in my future. When I get old and feeble, I am going to get on a Princess Cruise Ship. The average cost for a nursing home is $200 per day. I have checked on reservations at Princess and I can get a long term discount and senior discount price of $135 per day. That leaves $65 a day for:
1. Gratuities which will only be $10 per day.
2. I will have as many as 10 meals a day if I can waddle to the restaurant, or I can have room service (which means I can have breakfast in bed every day of the week).
3. Princess has as many as three swimming pools, a workout room, free washers and dryers, and shows every night.
4. They have free toothpaste and razors, and free soap and shampoo.
5. They will even treat you like a customer, not a patient. An extra $5 worth of tips will have the entire staff scrambling to help you.
6. I will get to meet new people every 7 or 14 days.
7. T.V. broken? Light bulb need changing? Need to have the mattress replaced? No Problem! They will fix everything and apologize for your inconvenience.
8. Clean sheets and towels every day, and you don't even have to ask for them.
9. If you fall in the nursing home and break a hip you are on Medicare; if you fall and break a hip on the Princess ship they will upgrade you to a suite for the rest of your life.
Now hold on for the best! Do you want to see South America, the Panama Canal, Tahiti, Australia, New Zealand, Asia, or name where you want to go? Princess will have a ship ready to go. So don't look for me in a nursing home, just call shore to ship.
P.S. And don't forget, when you die, they just dump you over the side at no charge.
