  New Yorker Plans 200 
          New Stores
The New Yorker plans to open 200 new stores by 2008, is aiming to increase sales by more than 25% and is preparing to go public.
Company owner Freidrich Knapp said that the company wants to increase sales to EUR1bn (US1.3bn) in three years. The company’s sales were EUR790m in 2005.
Knapp also said that the company was working on plans for an IPO, but would not say when this might happen. He said the company’s goal was to become Europe’s biggest seller of young fashion.

Ralph Lauren Accused of   
              Violating 
Labor & Business Laws
Four ex-Polo Ralph Lauren workers have filed a lawsuit against the company for alleged violations of California labor and business laws.
The lawsuit, which was filed in San Francisco Superior Court, claims Ralph Lauren used fraud to entice them to take their jobs and then subjected them to a barrage of labor violations. 
The former employers said the company promised them a reasonable wage, rest breaks and humane treatment but broke all of the promises, demanding they work many hours off-the-clock without pay or rest breaks. Ralph Lauren is even accused of keeping the workers ‘virtual prisoners, locking them in stores after hours so they could be inspected for stolen merchandise by managers. 
In addition, it is said the company manipulated their payroll records to record fewer hours than they had actually worked and denied them premium overtime pay. The suit alleges, the pressure to sell was intense, making managers pressure employees to forgo rest breaks so they spend more time making sales of fashions. 
As a result, the four disgruntled workers want unpaid wages, penalties and punitive damages. They will also ask the court to certify the case as a class action so they may pursue their claims on behalf of all Polo employees in California. In addition, they want an order on the company to stop engaging in the illegal employment practices. 
In 2002, a former San Francisco Ralph Lauren employee brought a class action against the business for requiring employees to buy Polo clothes to wear as a work uniform, an alleged violation of California labor law. Plaintiffs in that case have sought approval of a US$1.5m settlement that, if approved by the US District Court in San Francisco, will result in the payment of up to $3,000 in cash and full-value gift certificates to long term Polo employees.

Not All Swimsuits Are For
          Swimming 
Pool time is more about lounging than laps for many women, so designers are creating hydrophobic bikinis and maillots more appropriate to showgirls than swimmers.
Crystal-encrusted or lace-trimmed, these bathing suits might more aptly be called sunbathing suits. They're the extreme end of the larger trend toward embellished swimwear, with rope belts, wooden buttons and shell beads.
Over the years, swimwear has become much closer to ready-to-wear.
Designer Rudi Gernreich's 1964 topless tank wasn't exactly breaststroke-ready. Likewise the white fishnet one-piece Cheryl Tiegs famously modeled in Sports Illustrated in 1978.  But at least you could get those suits wet.
The lingerie-inspired, lace-trimmed styles from Newport Beach, Calif.-based Beach Bunny originally were "not recommended for ocean activity," according to the company's website, because saltwater has corrosive properties.
But no matter. Owner Angela Chittenden knows the largest body of water her customers are likely to dip into is a hot tub. The former Hawaiian Tropic model started her $189-$229 collection last year because she wanted something "cute to wear by the pool, more outfit-oriented." Fans include Paris Hilton and Jessica Alba. 
"I don't think a lot of our customers do that much swimming, to be honest with you," Chittenden says.
With gold hardware links securing the sides and glass beads crocheted into the fabric, Lenny suits, a luxury Brazilian line recently launched in the US, are for women who wear them "as a fashion statement," says the company's Jennifer Mallicote. The Lenny buyer "spends a lot of time with her look ... and she wouldn't want to mess it up by getting wet."
The shift is a reflection that for many, the beach is more of a catwalk than an ocean springboard. "You're already combating Mother Nature in the summer anyway - it's humid, it's hot," says Marshalls' Jennifer DeBarge-Goonan. "So adding water to the mix is disastrous."

Coquette Cover Girl Crowned
   Playmate of the Year 2006

Wal-Mart Sued Over "Fake"
             Fendi Goods
LVMH is suing Wal-Mart over claims that the huge retailer is selling fake Fendi-branded products in some of its Sam’s Club stores.
The French-based multi-national alleges that illegal copies of 
Fendi handbags, wallets and key chains have been sold at Sam’s Club 
outlets in New York and California, at huge discounts to the 
genuine articles.
The company gave one example of a Fendi-branded handbag on sale at 
a Sam’s Club store in Las Vegas for US$295.03, compared to the 
recommended retail price of $925.
Fendi, which filed the lawsuit in Manhattan, is seeking unspecified 
damages from Wal-Mart, plus the destruction of any illegal copies 
of its goods.
The lawsuit alleges that Sam’s Club stores are selling goods that 
“imitate the designs of the Fendi products and that bear 
reproductions, counterfeits, copies or colorable imitations of the 
Fendi trademarks”.
It goes on to say that Wal-Mart has never bought its products or 
asked if the items were genuine.
