May Department Stores Axes 1,500 Jobs
Retail giant May Department Stores Co on Wednesday said it had laid off around 1,500 workers, around 1.3 per cent of its total workforce, in sales management and support positions in a bid to cut costs.
The St Louis-based operator of nearly 450 department stores posted a rise in first quarter earnings last month despite a seven per cent slide in sales to $2.87 billion from $3.1bn in the year prior.
It said the cuts would affect people in sales support jobs as well as divisional and area sales managers.
The company, which also runs more than 400 stores under other banners such as David's Bridal stores and After Hours Formalwear, said the axed workers were told the news on Tuesday.
Spokeswoman Sharon Bateman said: "We're adjusting the work force to keep expenses in line with sales."

Former 'Baywatch' beauty Pamela Anderson is making her animation debut as a superhero who dances in a strip club, but she demanded and received a no-nudity clause for her cartoon alter ego. As a result, the upcoming cable series 'Stripperella' features lots of cartoon cleavage and sexual innuendo -- she is, after all, 'Secret Agent 69' -- but Anderson insists the show could be rated PG

F rance:  Spending Drops 4.1% In May
Consumer spending on clothes fell by 4.1 per cent in May, the government statistics institute Insee said on Wednesday.
The month on month apparel decline contributed to a 1.6 per cent decline in overall spending – the sharpest drop since August 1999.
Economists now predict that France's economy will at best achieve minimum growth in the second quarter.
Is it because Americans are not going to France and not spending money there?

Lawmakers assail NIH funding for sexual-arousal conference
The National Institutes of Health continues to fund sex studies despite protests from members of Congress who say projects such as paying women to watch pornography take taxpayer dollars away from potentially lifesaving research.
The critics' latest target of outrage: $26,000 in federal funds for a conference on sexual arousal next month at the Kinsey Institute in Bloomington, Ind.
Discussion topics will "include the relationship ... between sexual motivation and arousal," and development of "guidelines for ... measurement of sexual response," the conference organizer wrote in his grant application.
"If this conference needs funding, they ought to hit up [pornographer] Larry Flynt, not taxpayers," said Rep. Jeff Flake, Arizona Republican.
NIH documents obtained by The Washington Times show that the Bethesda-based federal agency's grant-review panel "unanimously and enthusiastically" endorsed next month's conference where Northwestern University psychology professor J. Michael Bailey will be a featured speaker.
It was a $147,000 NIH grant for a Bailey project — paying women to view pornography while using an instrument called a plethysmograph to measure their sexual responses — that prompted 20 Republican members of Congress to sign a letter to the agency's director, demanding an explanation for what they called "a bizarre spending decision."
"With the current state of the economy and government deficits, federal funds must be spent responsibly," Mr. Flake and his House colleagues wrote in a March letter to NIH Director Dr. Elias Adam Zerhouni. "We request an explanation of the criteria used for making project funding decisions. Specifically, we wish to know why funding for viewing pornography takes priority over funding for disease research."
Mr. Bailey, whose latest book, "The Man Who Would Be Queen," examines homosexuality and other aspects of sexual identity, is scheduled to participate in a panel about "Gender, Age & Sexual Orientation" on July 15, the final day of the four-day conference.
The conference is funded through the NIH's National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD).

Retailers, Manufacturers and Sales Representatives

Hello, In need of wholesalers & drop shippers of lingerie and shoes. I currently own and operate Interludes Lingerie in Butte Montana. We are a small store and have been in business for about 5 years. We currently do business with Shirley of Hollywood, Elegant Moments, and Kaplow Shoe Imports. Since Butte is a small town and the economy in Butte is in a terrible state, our sales have fallen and we can no longer do business with Shirley of Hollywood since they have recently imposed their $100.00 minimum order rule. We are looking for lingerie manufacturers and wholesalers who do not impose minimum orders to do business with. We really like Shirley's lines and would like to find similar type styles for our www.interludeslingerie.com  website. And if possible, plus sizes to put on this website. We are happy with Elegant Moments for our dance and clubwear styles that we feature on our www.baredancer.com  website. They drop ship for us too. We would also like to find a wholesaler/dropshipper for our sexy shoes that we feature and retail on our www.shoesforeplay.com  website. Is their wholesalers out there that will do business with the smaller retailers and online retailers without imposing minimum orders? Thank you. Kevin clubwear@baredancer.com

I have written you before telling you to take my email address off your list. I do not want anything to do with a business that endorses America's cold-blooded crimes against humanity Iraq. Now Bush is being exposed for the conniving liar that he is. You've been fooled.

Hello, I am writing to you because I have been reading over your newsletter and am hoping that you may be able to help me.
I am starting a new pajama/loungewear company and I am trying to find out the new trends in the market. What works, what doesn't, is loungewear going to continue to sell, etc.
Do you have any insight for me, any places I can go in the web to gather market information?  Any information you can give me would be so greatly appreciated.  Thank you in advance for your time,
Mindy Atkinson  mindya@attbi.com

I am looking for an intimate apparel buyer who can help me identify the manufacturer of some underwear as well as tell me if the style is particularly unique.  Any assistance would be appreciated.

Dear McPete I retail girdles over the internet through GirdleBound.com. I've seen references to a company called Berdita on UK sites. They make girdles and all-in-ones. They are exhibiting at Harrowgate in August. Do you have any contact information about Berdita? Many thanks, Richard Schwartz, GirdleBound.  richard.schwartz@earthlink.net

Beware of NCL Cruises
Recently my wife & I signed on for a cruise from Dover England to St. Petersburg Russia for their 300th Centennial aboard the Norwegian Cruise lines "Dream". After spending 2 days in London at the Marble Arch hotel which I understand is owned by NCL (Norwegian Cruise Lines) we were then taken to Dover to board the ship.
After taken our luggage from us we stood on a line for 2-1/2 hours for check-in at which time they gave us a NOTE stating that we would not be going to St. Petersburg, nor Estonia, nor Helsinki due to ice in the Bay of Finland.
Since the main reason that we along with the majority of the other 1700 passengers booked this cruise was to go to Russia, we questioned the timing of this notice.. Didn't they know of this problem 2-3 days ago? After all there has been ice there all winter,
it didn't just happen.
When we said that we would like to cancel and go at a later date we were told that this could not happen....They had our money!
They proceeded to bounce us around Scandinavia to some ports that we never heard of in Norway and Germany, and even docking in Stockholm on a Sunday when everything is CLOSED .
They said that the ice always melts on the 1st week in May and this was unexpected, well that's like saying that the sun always comes out on a Friday! They just tried to get an extra cruise in by gambling with our time & money.. I lost, Not NCL.
They lost a lot of future customers including me and many of my friends at a time when they will probably most need us.
Never Again!         Pete McKeown
