The French fashion house Yves Saint Laurent has objected to the latest
lingerie plans of the UK retail giant Marks & Spencer.
Yves Saint Laurent is unhappy about an attempt by M&S to register the
name MSL - short for Marks & Spencer Lingerie - as a trademark,
arguing that the name could be confused with its own acronym YSL.
Under European trademark registration rules, YSL has until 21 June to make
its full case against M&S' application, giving the British retailer
until 21 August to reply. The dispute is unlikely to be resolved until the end of the year at the
earliest.

Retailers Push Patriotism
Post-9/11
This Independence Day more than ever before, Target, Sears and other leading U.S. retail chains are betting Americans will want to wear their patriotism on their sleeve -- not to mention their beer mug, the dog's collar and their
string bikinis.
With memories of Sept. 11 still fresh, retailers see a fashion statement in the making -- everything and anything festooned in red white and blue.
Whether shopping for panties,
a T-shirt or napkins for the picnic table, consumers are finding store shelves and Web sites crowded with items adorned with the colors of American flag.
"This is flag-waving time and retailers are exploiting that in some ways," Kurt Barnard, president of Barnard's Retail Consulting Group, said. "It's a development which harks back to Sept. 11. But red, white and blue sells."

Spring showers send retail sales down 0.6 percent in Britain
LONDON - Cool, rainy weather helped push British retail sales down 0.6 percent in May compared to a year ago, the government said Thursday.
The Office for National Statistics said the weather discouraged many shoppers from buying summer clothing in May. Sales in the clothing and footwear sector were down 5.2 percent.
The overall 0.6 percent drop was the biggest since February 2000, and twice as large as the agency had forecast.

Canada April Retail Sales Up 1.0 Pct
OTTAWA - Canadian retail sales, one of the strongest sectors in the national economy, rose in April after two relatively flat months as consumer spending picked up again, Statscan said on Thursday.
Retail sales, seasonally adjusted, rose 1.0 percent from March. This was greater than the 0.7 percent increase forecast by analysts. Excluding sales by motor vehicle dealers, which dropped by 0.7 percent, the retail sector rose 1.6 percent.
"All retail sectors posted higher sales in April except drug stores (minus 0.7 percent). Retailers in the clothing (plus 3.9 percent), furniture (plus 1.5 percent) and general mechandise (plus 1.2 percent) sectors enjoyed the largest sales increases," Statscan said in its daily bulletin.
"Credit incentives and a red-hot housing market continued to stimulate sales in furniture stores," it added. April's clothing sector gain -- boosted by unseasonable weather in the first quarter -- was the largest in a year.

Judge to rule on lapdancing
LONDON - A judge must rule on whether the raunchy art of lapdancing by naked or semi-naked women is immoral in the eyes of the law, according to a High Court writ.
The landlords of a property in Birmingham used as a lapdancing club claimed their tenant had breached a term of the lease under which it undertook not to use the premises for any "illegal or immoral purpose."
In a writ issued at London's High Court they said that the tenant's business amounted to an "immoral use".
They are seeking damages on the basis of the "detrimental effect" on the area, and a court order banning the
lapdancing.
The writ said the club's aim was the "entertainment of males, sometimes in close proximity, by naked or semi-naked female dancers purporting to behave in an 'erotic' fashion."
It alleged that the activity was immoral, breached the lease and planning permission and harmed the property and surrounding premises because it was likely to encourage prostitution.
