Hanesbrands to Cut Lead Time
Innerwear and hosiery maker Hanesbrands Inc hopes to
reduce lead times and increase speed to market after it started shipping products from its new West Coast
distribution center.
The 1.3m square-foot facility in Perris, California is the largest facility in the company's worldwide supply
chain and will more than quadruple the company's West Coast distribution capacity in 2009.
It is strategically located near the Long Beach, California, port and receives goods from the company's
production centers in Asia and Central America for distribution to retailers.
"A large West Coast distribution centre increases our company's flexibility to effectively and efficiently
distribute our core products produced across our supply chain," said Lee Woodard, Hanesbrands vice president of
global logistics.
Until now, the majority of the company's distribution centers were located in the eastern half of the
country.
The new facility is also claimed to be one of the biggest warehouses in the world built to advanced
environmental standards.
Hanesbrands, whose products include Hanes, Champion, Playtex, and Wonderbra, will lease the distribution
centre and retain NFI, a third-party logistics provider based in Cherry Hill, New Jersey, to manage the
facility.

Bangladesh Garment Exports
Up July thru November
Higher shipments of clothing and textiles helped Bangladesh to a 26.8% jump in total exports in the five
months to November 2008.
Figures published by the Export Promotion Bureau January 12 show exports were up to $6.6bn in the July
to November period, up from $5.2bn a year earlier.
Exports of woven garments - Bangladesh's largest export category - were up 24.8% to $2.3bn, the figures showed,
while earnings from knit textiles climbed 34.6% to $2.7bn.

Beckham Models Armani
Underwear
Italian fashion giant Giorgio Armani has unveiled the first images of celebrity Victoria Beckham appearing as its official worldwide model for Emporio Armani Women's Underwear.
The images will coincide with Armani's Spring Summer 2009 advertising campaign, the company said.
Its first advertising campaign featuring Victoria Beckham will roll out in Spring around the world in fashion and lifestyle magazines and on signature billboards in major cities such as New York, Los Angeles, London, Milan, Rome, Paris and Tokyo.
Giorgio Armani said: "I chose Victoria Beckham to launch our new global Emporio Armani Women's Underwear campaign because she is a stylish and intriguing woman.
"Great underwear is alluring and provocative, and so I wanted to work with someone who would make a real impression. I'm sure Victoria's presence will generate great excitement and contribute to the continued international growth of our Emporio Armani Women's Underwear business."

M&S to Close Stores
UK retail giant Marks & Spencer is to close 27 stores
and cut over 1,200 jobs as it seeks to cut costs after like-for-like sales fell 7.1% over the Christmas
trading period and discounts killed margins.
The moves confirm rumors circulating and are described by chairman Sir Stuart Rose as "the right action to
maintain the strength of our business." In total, M&S hopes to save up to GBP200m.
The retailer intends to shut two of its general merchandise chain stores and 25 underperforming Simply
Food stores, with the loss of around 780 jobs.
It will also reduce its head office headcount by 15% or 450 staff, with workers at its Per Una brand based in
Oxfordshire among those losing their jobs.
Sir Stuart added that the cutbacks were necessary given that he expects "challenging economic conditions to
continue for at least the next 12 months."
The company will also cap employees' annual increases in pensionable pay to 1%.
The cuts come as Britain's biggest clothing retailer said group sales in the 13 weeks to December 27 fell by
1.2%.
UK sales were down 3.4%, with clothing sales slumping by 6.5%. On a like-for-like basis, UK sales of general
merchandise (which includes clothing and footwear) fell by 8.9%.
However, M&S said it maintained its market share in clothing, helped by strong demand for its kid's wear
and lingerie.
"Our trading stance throughout the quarter enabled us to offer our customers great value, grow our volumes,
maintain our leading market position and uphold our ethical stance," Rose said.
Sales volumes were driven by pre-Christmas one-day sales, which Sir Stuart said helped "kick-start
Christmas - but this increased promotional activity has cut into margins.
M&S now expects UK retail gross margin for the full year to be around 175 basis points lower than last
year.
Internationally, M&S said sales grew 26.9% during its third quarter, helped by the opening of new stores. Its
online business also performed strongly in the third quarter, with record traffic driving sales up 29%.
