Demo Stores to Close
Casual apparel company Pacific Sunwear of California plans to close its remaining 154 Demo stores as soon as is practical, and to relocate its distribution activities.
The company said its decision follows a review of strategic alternatives for the Demo division, as previously announced in October 2007.
In February last year, the company announced the planned closure of 74 underperforming Demo stores, all of which were closed as of the end of May 2007.
Pacific Sunwear's chairman and CEO Sally Frame Kasaks said: "As we previously announced, we strongly believe that the best course for enhancing shareholder value is to focus our attention and resources on the PacSun business.
"We engaged an outside financial advisor to help us carefully evaluate strategic alternatives for demo and have determined on the basis of this review that it is in the best interests of our investors to close our remaining demo stores and concentrate our efforts on our core business."
Upon completion the company expects the net cash outflow of the Demo store closings to be in the range of near neutral to approximately $10m.
Separately, the company also announced that it will relocate all of its distribution activities to its distribution center in Olathe, Kansas, and close its distribution centre in Anaheim, California.
Kasaks added: "In analyzing our operations, it became clear that we can better leverage our existing capacity at our Olathe distribution centre to improve the efficiency of our supply chain, better service our stores and reduce certain costs.
"We regret the impact on our associates of both of these decisions, but recognize these actions are necessary in order to improve our financial performance and best position the company for future growth."
The relocation is expected to result in pre-tax charges of approximately $3m, and the company said it plans to gradually phase down its operations in the Anaheim distribution centre, with the facility expected to close by the end of April 2008.

Model's 14-Point Action Plan
As our thoughts turn away from festive indulgences and towards the thrill of the new season, the British Fashion Council has published a 14-point action plan in response to September's high-profile report from the Model Health Inquiry on safeguarding the well-being of models working in the UK.
The recommendations adhere closely to the suggestions made by the Inquiry - which was chaired by Baroness Kingsmill and included clinical experts and industry insiders such as Giles Deacon, Erin O'Connor and Betty Jackson – and include banning the use of models under the age of 16 at London Fashion Week, requiring health certificates from models appearing in catwalk shows, establishing a representative body for models and taking action against digital
manipulation.
"Several key recommendations have already been implemented and in some areas the BFC is taking additional steps to support models," the action plan states. "A number of proposals - especially those built on partnerships with international organizations - do require further work; this work will continue. The BFC is determined to take advantage of the 'window of opportunity' identified by the Inquiry, while sustaining and developing our vibrant industry to further strengthen London's position as the most creative and dynamic of the fashion capitals."

Keeping In Under The Kilt
In Scotland, the most important time for a young lad is when he "comes of age" and is allowed to purchase and wear his first kilt.
A couple of weeks before, his important birthday, a young lad went to a tailor shop and found the material he wanted for his first kilt. He took the material to the tailor and said, "I'd like ye to make me a kilt with this material here and, if ye don't mind, I'd like ye to make me a pair of matching underwear for it. I hear it gets a might drafty up dem tings!"
So the tailor took the material and promised to call the young lad when the order was completed.
A few days later, the tailor called the lad back to the shop. "Here's ye kilt, and here's ye matching underwear, and here's five yards of the material left over. Ye might want to take it home and keep it in case you want anything else made of it."
So the lad rushed home with his order, threw the material in his room, and donned his kilt. In his excitement, he decided to run to his girlfriend's house to show off his new purchase.
Unfortunately, in his excitement, he forgot to don his underwear.
When his girlfriend answered the door, he pointed to his kilt and said, "well, what'd ye think?"
"Ah, but dat's a fine looking kilt," she exclaimed.
"Aye, and if ye like it, ye'll really like what's underneath," he stated as he lifted his kilt to show here.
"Oh, but dat's a dandy," his girlfriend shouted admiringly.
Still not realizing that he didn't have his underwear on he exclaimed quite proudly, "aye, and if ye like it, I've got five more yards of it at home!"

Gyllenhaal's Photos
Maggie Gyllenhaal has revealed that she was shocked to see pictures of herself in her underwear after posing for Agent Provocateur.
The Secretary actress, 30, modeled for the lingerie firm's 'The Adventures of Miss AP' campaign, but said she was unprepared for what the job entailed.
She said: "Somehow I hadn't understood that there'd be all these pictures of me out there in my underwear. I did it as an art project.
"They asked me to do it and I said yes, but somehow I never put that together with the fact I’d have to stand around in my underwear getting my picture taken. The pictures are very tongue-in-cheek and have an irony about them, it’s not the same as doing a Victoria’s Secret ad. I felt like I was playing a character, someone who wasn’t me."
However, she added that she and her husband, actor Peter Sarsgaard, were thrilled with the final product, saying: "I was looking at them with Peter, saying: 'I don't look like that - that underwear is really good!'
