Ambiance fights back
The future of an erotic boutique planned for Jonnet Plaza in Monroeville,
Pa. may be decided by the municipality's zoning hearing board
Ambiance, which sells lingerie, lotions and sex aids, was scheduled to open in November. But Monroeville officials revoked the store's occupancy and zoning permits, claiming that it had misrepresented itself as a clothing store when applying for the permits.
A local zoning ordinance relegates adult businesses to industrial districts. Jonnet Plaza is in a commercial zone at the intersection of Old William Penn Highway (Business Route 22) and Center Road.
Ambiance officials say the company did not misrepresent itself and that it is more upscale than a typical adult business. The company also suggested that Monroeville's adult business ordinance may be illegal.
Ambiance Inc. has filed a federal lawsuit in hopes of regaining the necessary operating permits.
