How Did You Celebrate
New Year's Eve?
In Italy, Mexico, Ecuador, Venezuela and several other countries, wearing red underwear on New Year’s Eve is believed to bring love, while wearing yellow underwear brings prosperity.
In many Spanish-speaking countries, the tradition on New Year’s Eve is to eat 12 grapes as the clock strikes midnight. With each grape, you make a wish. In the Philippines, it’s traditional to wear clothes with circular patterns and eat circle-shaped fruits, as circles attract wealth.
In the United States, it’s all about lowering (or tossing) objects, usually spherical in nature, from the tops of buildings. There’s the iconic Waterford crystal ball in New York City, of course. In California, a large orange is dropped, and in Atlanta, Ga., it’s a peach. In Bangor, it’s a beach ball covered in Christmas lights. In Eastport, it’s a giant sardine.
Parties are the name of the game for New Year’s Eve. Bangor’s annual Downtown Countdown celebration, now in its fourth year, offers a multitude of events for children and adults, from music and dancing to making crafts and poetry readings.
Belfast’s New Year’s By the Bay offers activities all night long. There’s music and dancing in Eastport, Presque Isle and Blue Hill, lasting until the big hour.
There’s no shortage of things to do in eastern Maine for New Year’s.
Many folks, however, will host their own parties, with varying degrees of fanciness. While it is true that New Year’s Eve is often an excuse to get very dressed up and serve ornate hors d’oeuvres, it’s just as easy to host a laid-back event that still has plenty of high-class food and beverages, whether it’s grown-ups-only or kid-friendly.
Unlike Christmas, Thanksgiving or other holidays, the only expectation for New Year’s Eve is to have a good time. You can stay in your pajamas, or you can get dolled up in your fanciest party wear.

Hot Tuna UK & EU Sales
Up 33%
Surfwear and fashion brand Hot Tuna has swung to a full-year profit,
as moves to cut costs across its business have started to pay off.
The firm posted a gross profit of GBP248,000 (US$397,012) for the year to June 30, compared to a loss of GBP27,000 during the prior
year period.
It also said its annual revenue was up 1.6% to GBP1.14m, and that it raised GBP860,000 during the year by issuing 283m new shares.
The company's UK & EU sales were up 33% on last year, while there was strong growth of its children's range in Australia
Geoff O'Connell, Hot Tuna CEO, said: "Although over the past year the retail trading environment was challenging, we have worked hard to
simplify the corporate structure and reduce our operating costs.
"This has resulted in a more streamlined and higher margin business.
"We are confident that the combination of delivering the right product, to the right buyers across all our territories will continue
to deliver solid revenue growth."
"We are positive about the outlook for 2010 and go forward confidently."
The company said that new collections have had a strong up-take for the coming season, across all regions with new national retailers and
e-tailers taking the product for the first time.
It said the reintroduction of the profitable swim range, absent from the Australian market last year, will also boost revenues. The
European market will see the introduction of a children's range.

The Conch Light
In a misguided burst of creativity, I installed a night-light in a conch shell I found on the beach. My wife took an instant dislike to it, and at the next yard sale it was the first thing she put out.
I felt vindicated when a woman kept coming back to check it out then finally bought it.
"That will look great in your home," I said.
"Oh it is not for me," she explained. "My bridge club is having a charity auction and we were asked to bring in the most hideous thing we can find. What I've got here is a winner."
Counterfeit Clothing Signs
Bad spelling, cheap prices and poor quality are all telltale signs of
fake garments, according to a UK clothing retailer.
Online retailer Styles UK Designer Clothing has warned shoppers about potential pitfalls with its "Top ten tips on how to spot counterfeit
designer clothing".
Also among the tips are buying from a US or EU based website and company when online and taking a good look at the stitching.
Spokesperson Andy May said: "Another simple means to identify a fake garment is to look at the stitching. Inherently, poor quality
manufacture shows up in the stitching of the labels and the seams, as well as around pockets."
He added that unusual comments such as 100% genuine should raise alarm bells, and that even garments with the correct tags aren't
always real.
