December figures bow for Wal-Mart, Federated
Wal-Mart and Federated Department Stores, two of the leading US retailers, yesterday reported that their December sales figures were trending towards the lower end of their expectations, an indication that holiday shopping is tepid and a last-minute surge during the final weeks of the season is unlikely to help.
Although the holiday season started robustly over the Thanksgiving weekend, sales have shown lower growth since.
At Wal-Mart, the world's biggest retailer, sales are heading towards the lower end of the 3-5 per cent growth range forecast previously. "This holiday season is very difficult to predict with less shopping days and customers buying closer to the event," the retailer announced in its weekly sales recording.
Soft results were helped slightly by an increase in demand for crafts, pet supplies, underwear, household chemicals and pharmaceutical products.
Meanwhile, Federated Department Stores, owner of the upmarket
Bloomingdale's and Macy's stores, yesterday warned that total sales
could decline by as much as 2.5 per cent during the November and
December period.

China's rapid advance is sending shivers down the spines of textile
and clothing industries in countries across the globe.
US textile and apparel imports from China more than doubled in volume during the first eight months of 2002,
with apparel imports surging
47 per cent and textile imports soaring an astronomical 145 per cent.
But are textiles and apparel in China a competitive threat or an
investment opportunity?

Sung to "Walking In A Winter Wonderland"
Lacy things -- the wife is missin',
Didn't ask -- her permission,
I'm wearin' her clothes,
Her silk pantyhose,
Walkin' 'round in women's underwear.
In the store -- there's a teddy,
Little straps -- like spaghetti,
It holds me so tight,
Like handcuffs at night,
Walkin' 'round in women's underwear.
In the office there's a guy named Melvin,
He pretends that I am Murphy Brown.
He'll say, "Are you ready?" I'll say,"Whoa, Man!"
"Let's wait until our wives are out of town!"
Later on, if you wanna,
We can dress -- like Madonna,
Put on some eyeshade,
And join the parade,
Walkin' 'round in women's underwear!
Lacy things... missin',
Didn't ask... permission,
Wearin' her clothes,
Her silk pantyhose,
Walkin' 'round in women's underwear.
Walkin' 'round in women's underwear,
Walkin' 'round in women's underwear!
