Retail Sales Sluggish During January
The nation's retailers struggled again with a difficult sales climate during January, although they were able to clear out winter leftovers thanks to deep discounts and frigid temperatures.
As storeowners reported their January results Thursday, the extent of their troubles was reflected in the performance of Wal-Mart Stores Inc., usually the industry leader. The discounter said sales at stores open at least year, known as same-store sales, fell below Wall Street forecasts.
Meanwhile, department stores and mall-based apparel chains again stalled, particularly Sears, Roebuck and Co., which suffered a sharper sales decline than analysts expected and warned that first-quarter earnings will be well below Wall Street projections due to lower credit income.
There were exceptions including Gap Inc., which continued its turnaround with a double-digit gain in same-store sales, far better than the mid-single digit increase Wall Street expected. Same-store sales are considered the best gauge of a retailer's strength.
"January was marginally better than the prior month. But we are still locked in the same perspective," said Michael P. Niemira, vice president of Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi Ltd. He added that war with Iraq is a "near-term potential and it makes for an iffy environment.

A mathematician, an accountant and an economist apply for the same job.
The interviewer calls in the mathematician and asks "What do two plus two equal?" The mathematician replies "Four." The interviewer asks "Four, exactly?" The mathematician looks at the interviewer incredulously and says "Yes, four, exactly."
Then the interviewer calls in the accountant and asks the same question "What do two plus two equal?" The accountant says "On average, four - give or take ten percent, but on average, four."
Then the interviewer calls in the economist and poses the same question "What do two plus two equal?" The economist gets up, locks the door, closes the shade, sits down next to the interviewer and says
"What do you want it to equal?"

The recent January 2003 show for SPRING 2004 was
reported as a huge success. Traffic was more than triple the previous shows and proved the merging of INPRINTS NY with ENGLISH ACCENTS to be a dynamic step in the right direction with increased sales and many new
contacts! Exhibitors and attendees alike were outspoken in their delight with the new 'look' of the show and the many amenities provided by the show's producer, Lisa
Mainardi.

LACE GRACE
Lace up, that's the watchword for lingerie today." Sexy nothings' in lace were, are and always will be the order of the day. Lacy lingerie has taken a
sharp turnaround: from function to fashion, concealing to revealing, from just support to seduction. So you love lacy lingerie? But can you
distinguish one type of lace from the other? There are many kinds of laces
available. Here is a ready reckoner of the popular types of lace available:
Alencon-a needlepoint lace with designs in deep relief on sheer net; originated in Alencon, France; can be
re-embroidered.
Battenberg-made by applying a coarse linen Battenberg tape
to the design and
connecting tape with a decorative linen stitch
by hand or machine; coarser
than Renaissance lace.
Belgian-pillow laces (or bobbin laces) made with machine-made
grounds from
Belgium.
Bobbin-a category of handmade lace made with small bobbins
holding attached
to a small pillow; a paper design is placed on
the pillow, pins inserted and
yams are interlaced around the pins
to form a pattern.
Chantilly-delicate scrolls and floral designs on fine mesh,
often with scalloped edges from Chantilly, France.
Duchesse-a bobbin lace with floral designs and a tape effect made
with thread and much raised work; it has an allover effect with
irregularly shaped spaces between designs. French-machine-made
lace fabrics made in imitation of handmade French lace (Chantilly
and Alencon, for example).
Guipure-a heavy lace with large patterns in needlepoint or bobbin
over a course meshes ground.
Honiton-a bobbin lace similar to duchesse that's made in England;
it is made
first and then appliquéd to a machine-made net ground
or lace with round heavy motifs made of fine braid joined together
like guipure lace.
Renaissance--a heavy, flat lace made with tape laid out in a pattern
and join together with various stitches.
Rose-point-a Venetian needlepoint similar to Venetian point,
but finer and with smaller motifs of flowers, foliage, and scrolls;
it has buttonhole edges and a heavy cordon net (a heavier thread
that outlines the motifs).
Schiffli-a machine-made lace with delicate floral embroidery.
Spanish-a lace with a flat design of roses on a net background;
it is used for mantillas.
Venise-a heavy needlepoint lace with floral sprays, foliage, or
geometric designs; first made in Venice, Italy.
Venetian point-a heavy needlepoint lace with floral sprays or
foliage, or geometrical designs, made in high relief by buttonhole
stitches; it is usually made in Venice.
