            Stop SOPA & PIPA
On January 18, 2012, Wikipedia along with an estimated 7000 other smaller websites blacked out in protest of two bills in the United States House of Representatives and US Senate. SOPA, "Stop Online Piracy Act" and PIPA "Protect IP Act" are efforts to stop copyright infringement committed by foreign web sites. But the way these two bills are worded they actually infringe free expression on the internet. If these bills are passed, the government can shut down many of our websites, blogs, Facebook, Twitter, Youtube along with other social networking sites.

Drought to Hurt US 
      Organic Cotton
Dry conditions in some US states are set to hit the country's organic cotton harvests, according to research carried out by the Organic Trade Association.
The study, which was funded by Cotton Incorporated, found that while 2011 saw the largest number of acres planted since 1999, harvested acres and bales are expected to be down by 39% and 45%, respectively, due to a drought in the Southern Plains.
The extremely dry conditions in Texas have forced farmers to abandon more than 65% of their planted crop in 2011.
The survey, released January 26, showed that planted acres were up 36% to reach 11,827 acres in 2010, while bales harvested were up nearly 24%. In 2010, US producers harvested 11,262 acres of organic cotton, representing 95% of their planted acres and yielding some 13,279 bales.
A modest acreage gain is forecast for 2012, bringing plantings of organic cotton to 16,406 acres. Another 2% net gain is in the five-year forecast, bringing the total to 16,716 acres.
Opportunities for expansion exist in nascent organic cotton growing regions such as North Carolina, which harvested its first crop of organic cotton in 2011.
Survey respondents said the cost per acre to grow organic cotton ranged from US$350 to $650, with an average cost per acre of $440. Most reported receiving $1.50 per pound for organic cotton, with prices ranging from as high as $2.40 for organic Pima cotton to a low of $1.35 for one organic upland producer.

Gas Restored to Textile
             Factories
Pakistan's government is to restore gas supplies to the textile industry in the province of Punjab after a one-month hiatus.
According to a notification issued by the Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL), from the beginning of this week gas will be supplied to the textile industry for two days a week on a rotation basis.
Authorities disconnected the gas supply to the region's textile 
industry just before Christmas, resulting in widespread protests and rallies by factory owners and workers. The All Pakistan Textile Mills Association (APTMA) later vowed to defy the government's gas cut policy.
Gohar Ejaz, former chairman of APTMA, says that over 70% of the textile and clothing industry is located in Punjab province and over 10m people depend on it for work. The prolonged gas suspension has badly affected the sector's daily-wage workers, he adds.
APTMA's Punjab region chairman Ahsan Bashir claims the industry has already lost US$2bn in exports during the first half of the current fiscal year and it is likely to suffer more if energy supplies to the industry are not improved.
The government, meanwhile, says the industries will receive gas for three days a week once the cold weather in the northern part of the country ends next month.

     Child Labor Claims
US retailer Limited Brands and certification body Fairtrade 
International have challenged a series of allegations that claim child labor is used on farms in Burkina Faso that grow Fairtrade organic cotton used in Victoria's Secret garments.
The latest statements follow a Bloomberg report at the end of last 
year, which described the life of a 13-year-old girl who was beaten by the farmer she works for on a cotton field in Burkina Faso. The cotton picked by the girl went to factories in other countries where it was made into Victoria's Secret underwear, the report said.
However, Limited Brands says Clarisse Kambire, the "young girl" who was at the center of the article, is 21 years old. Also, the retailer claims Kambire does not live or work on a registered organic farm in Burkina Faso, but instead works on a vegetable farm.
Additionally, Victorien Kamboule, who was reported to be an organic cotton farmer in the report, does not grow cotton, according to the records of the UNPCB, which registers all cotton farms in Burkina Faso. 
This is backed up by COCERT, a French certification organization that inspects and monitors organic agricultural production. Kamboule grows vegetables.
Fairtrade International has endorsed the claims made by Limited Brands, adding that it traveled with leading UNPCB officials to the village of Benvar in Burkina Faso, where it met with Fairtrade cotton producers and children and families identified in the Bloomberg article.
Fairtrade also said it strongly recommends that media adopt child protection methods and a rights-based approach in relation to those they identify as being under the age of 18. Identifying a young person by their first and last names, on issues of grave human rights concern, may put them at "extreme risk" it warned.
Bloomberg, however, has stood by its claims and reported that US investigators are conducting a preliminary inquiry into forced child labor used in the program.
Bloomberg reported that the birth certificate which cites Kambire's age as 21 is actually the birth certificate of a deceased older sister. It said that Clarisse Kambire adopted the name after her sibling died more than a decade ago.
According to Bloomberg, the government's preliminary inquiry is being carried out by the ICE Homeland Security Investigations division, which is part of the Department of Homeland security. It is responsible for enforcing the Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act, a law which bans the import of goods manufactured by forced labor.
Bloomberg also said that under regulations separate from those being examined by homeland security, the US Department of Labor had determined the problem of forced child labor in Burkina Faso's cotton sector was serious enough to ban the fiber from the federal government's procurement system.

Putting Up With Jocks 
The basketball coach stormed into the university president's office and demanded a raise right then and there. 
"Please," protested the college President, "you already make more than the entire History department." 
"Yeah, maybe so, but you don't know what I have to put up with," the coach blustered. "Look." 
He went out into the hall and grabbed a jock who was jogging down the hallway. "Run over to my office and see if I'm there," he ordered. 
Twenty minutes later the jock returned, sweaty and out of breath.

      NRDC Files Lawsuit 
   Against Nanosilver
The Natural Resources Defense Council has filed a lawsuit in the US federal court to try to limit public exposure to antimicrobial nanosilver used in clothing and other textiles.
The lawsuit is looking to prevent the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) from allowing nanosilver onto the market "without the legally-required data about its suspected harmful effects on humans and wildlife", it says.
The move follows the decision by the EPA in December 2011 to allow HeiQ Materials to use nanosilver in fabrics for the next four years while it generates data on toxicity to human health and aquatic organisms.
Silver is a well-recognized antimicrobial, which is able to kill bacteria. Nanosilver is engineered from silver and marketed as an even stronger microbial.
"Because of its incredibly small size, nanosilver penetrates organs and tissues in the body that larger forms of silver cannot reach, like the brain, lung, and testes," claims Dr Jennifer Sass, senior scientist in NRDC's health program.
"For a pesticide that has some potentially devastating effects when released into the environment, and potentially damaging effects when absorbed by humans, EPA should have done a better job in protecting our health and the environment."
However, HeiQ CEO Carlo Centozne said that the company is committed to "environmentally responsible products" and ensuring they meet regulatory standards.
"The EPA conducted a thorough risk assessment using test data and conservative assumptions and decided to approve the product for commercial use," he said. 
"HeiQ AGS-20 is an innovative and efficient technology that enables effective antimicrobial protection for textiles - from shirts, uniforms and sheets to tents and tarps - because it uses less silver than other comparable products."

Fab Foundations

January’s Paris Salon International de la Lingerie is a three-day mad dash of energy, noise and excitement. The convention space is divided between two simultaneous shows. On one side is Interfiliere, which showcases fabrics, embellishments and everything else that is used to produce intimates products, and the Salon, which showcases the products themselves.

Each side has its own trend forecasts and fashion shows. The Salon is further broken down into areas – Essentials, Loungewear, Men, and Chic/Spicy. These last two are the newer and upcoming companies. It’s where you see innovative thinking and get a better sense of the minds of young designers.

The floor of the show is constantly thrumming with competing fashion shows. Sadly, after three days of hearing Rihanna’s “We Found Love” and Maroon 5’s “Moves Like Jagger” over and over again those two songs are forever ruined for me. If only I could get them out of my head!

Despite the mash up of sound and color, a few key trends emerged clearly from the show:

1) The retro trend that hit hard in the past year is not going anywhere yet. Most collections featured at least some high-waisted briefs.
2) Corsets and bustiers – with a splash of fetishwear – also continue to be popular, with a lot of younger designers focusing on that side of the spectrum.
3) Shapewear has gone from girdle to gorgeous, with numerous brands launching shaping pieces that are gorgeous on their own and/or match their essential lingerie collections.

How to Sell In An Over-saturated Market

Earlier this month, Crain's New York published this article about how the lingerie market is both over saturated and struggling with rising costs. Many lingerie companies didn't make very much money last year, and even the ones that made a profit are raising their prices. 

All of this means that if you're a lingerie designer or company, you need to make a commitment to getting your marketing in order in 2012. 
With more companies and designers competing for the same buyers, a fabulous product is expected rather than appreciated. To create loyal buyers, you'll need more than a great product - you'll want a dash or two of stylish marketing as well. 

1. Create a culture, and become an icon. 

Clothing designers have been doing this for ages, and high end lingerie designers have been borrowing from their playbook for years now. Brands like Agent Provocateur have this down to a science, but you don't have to be a giant luxury brand to apply this strategy. 

Are you fun and funky or all about serious elegance? Look beyond your products and explore your marketing materials, your website, and your social media presence. Study how your purchasing process makes people feel. Is it fun? Does it build anticipation? 

If you feel like your marketing isn't quite lining up as well as you'd like it to, pick three adjectives that describe your brand and spend this year focusing on them. When you focus on becoming the destination for a small market instead of trying to dominate a large one, you gain the ability to focus on attracting loyal customers who will buy from you over and over again. 

2. Figure out what you're bad at, and then hire someone else to do it. 

You got into the lingerie business by doing something you were good at. 
You created groundbreaking lingerie designs, or figured out how to increase distribution by 362% for your company. 

Do you know how to develop content that fits on various social media platforms? Do you know how to build pathways to sales within a website? 
Do you know how to write an educational and promotional newsletter? 

All of these are areas where you may be better off hiring an expert if you have the budget to do so. An expert can come in and develop your marketing content and teach you some tricks along the way. By picking the right person, you can ensure that your marketing efforts make have a greater impact and spend your valuable time doing the things that made you successful in the first place.

3. Embrace social media, and get to know some bloggers. 

Social media is the way of the future, and brands that continue to ignore it will be doing so at their own peril. Brands that refuse to work with bloggers will also feel the sting financially. Having a few well placed bloggers on your side, and the social media know-how to make the most of their reviews will ensure that your company grows in any economy. 

I have lots of clients who want to know how to get their products mentioned on best of lists, and I always tell them that bloggers are the way to go. Be willing to send out samples (even if it's very selectively), and make it easy for bloggers to introduce your lingerie to their audiences. Find some bloggers whose work you love and respect, and then develop close relationships with them. Everyone benefits in the long term, and you'll be able to get the word out about your products to a much larger audience

      Retirement Party 
The boss is finally old enough to retire from the company. On his last day of work, he ordered a farewell party for himself. The boss wanted everyone to express their good feeling about him by writing on the farewell card, so later he could remember how his staff "miss" him. Most people are writing standard phrases like, "Without you, the company will never be the same," "We will always remember you," etc. 
Obviously the boss was not satisfied. "I need something from the bottom of your heart, something really touching, you know. Okay, John, you have been working with me for the last 20 years. You are my best staff. I am retiring now. What do you have to say?" 
Slowly but firmly, John wrote, "The best news in 20 years." 

Consortium Wins Lejaby
        Takeover Bid
The commercial court in Lyon on January 18, chose the takeover bid for insolvent French lingerie maker Lejaby submitted by a consortium led by Alain Prost, the former CEO of Italy's La Perla and previously managing director of French lingerie brand Chantelle.
His associates in the consortium are Lejaby's Tunisian sub-contractor Isalys, Christian Bugnon (the son of Lejaby's former owner) and Italian investment fund Fiduciaria San Babila. The consortium plans to retain 195 of Lejaby's 450 staff in France.
The other bid before the court had been submitted by French nightwear specialist Canat, which planned to keep on 170 workers.
Lejaby went into administration at the end of October, putting its difficulties down to a significant shrinking in the multi-brand retailer channel, the main outlet for its products.
Over 90% of Lejaby's production now takes place outside France, notably in North Africa.
Just before Christmas the court ordered the liquidation of the company but allowed it to continue trading until January 20.

             UN Backs NICE
The United Nations has joined forces with NICE (the Nordic Initiative Clean and Ethical) to develop the first fashion sector-specific sustainability initiative under the UN’s Global Compact.
The collaboration, it is hoped, will help the fashion industry to move towards a more sustainable future and will be launched on May 3, at the Copenhagen Fashion Summit.
“As an industry facing serious and widely publicized social and environmental challenges, the fashion and textile industry is uniquely positioned to launch a sectoral initiative under the umbrella of the UN Global Compact,” said Georg Kell, executive director of the UN Global Compact.
“Fashion has historically had the capacity to affect the society as a whole, and therefore fashion is a great place to start building a new creative future aligned with the ecosystem we are all a part of,” added Eva Kruse, chairman of the Nordic Fashion Association and CEO of the Danish Fashion Institute.
“We look very much forward to engaging leading experts and leaders of international fashion companies in the work of creating a meaningful and ambitious tool for the global fashion industry.”
NICE is a joint venture by the fashion industry in the Nordic countries, led by the Nordic Fashion Association.

To enhance the look, hair and makeup were kept soft and clean to

ApparelSourcing Show to
  Launch in February
A new international event for sourcing apparel and accessories is being launched alongside the Texworld fabric fair taking place in Paris this month.
Organiser Messe Frankfurt France says it is introducing ApparelSourcing Paris in response to requests from buyers.
More than 60 manufacturers from Portugal, China, India, Pakistan, Italy, Bangladesh and Vietnam are said to be attending the first show in February. They include suppliers for longer term sourcing of basic collections, medium term for replenishing stocks and the short cycle for one-off collections.
Women's wear dominates with almost 50% of the lines, men's wear and children's clothing represent 30% and accessories 20% in various price ranges.
The ApparelSourcing show will be held at the Paris Le Bourget Exhibition Center from February 13-16, 2012. 
Meanwhile, the organizers say 630 exhibitors are being lined up at Texworld, where they will unveil their new products for spring/summer 2013. New exhibitors are joining from India, Hong Kong, Belgium, the US, China, Italy, Turkey and South Korea.

Wacoal Reports Net Profit
              Growth
Wacoal recorded a jump in nine-month net profit as the company said it continued to improve profitability through the structural reform of its domestic operations and through developing its Chinese business.
For the period ended December 31, net income jumped 58.4% to reach JPY7.3bn as sales increased 2.9% to JPY132.1bn.
For the full-year, the company is forecasting that net income will increase 106.5% to JPY5.4bn as net sales rise 3.2% to JPY171bn.
The company attributed the growth to the "favorable performance of our core operating business, Walcoal brand and the expansion of our retail business".
"Our group (primarily Wacoal Corp) entered the second year of our three-year mid-term plan and sought to improve profitability through structural reform of our domestic business and made efforts to strengthening growth by actively developing our overseas business, mainly in China," the company said.
Over the period, sales were driven by the Wacoal brand, Peach John and its business in China.

Death on Vacation 
During their vacation and while they were visiting Jerusalem, George's mother-in-law died. 
With death certificates in hand, George went to the American Consulate Office to make arrangements to send the body back to the states for proper burial. 
The Consul, after hearing of the death of the mother-in-law told George that the sending of a body back to the states for burial is very, very expensive. It could cost as much as $5,000.00. 
The Consul continues, in most cases the person responsible for the remains normally decides to bury the body here. This would only cost $150.00. 
George thinks for some time and answers, "I don't care how much it will cost to send the body back; that's what I want to do." 
The Consul, after hearing this, says, "You must have loved your mother-in-law very much considering the difference in price." 
"No, it's not that," says George. "You see, I know of a case from many years ago of a person that was buried here in Jerusalem. On the third day he rose from the dead! I just can't take that chance."

Sperry Top-Sider Signs Licensing Agreements
Footwear brand Sperry Top-Sider has signed a series of licensing agreements to extend its reach into bags, belts, hosiery, eyewear, swimwear, headware, scarves, gloves and shoe care.
The Collective Brands-owned company said the new products will launch in spring 2013 and will be sold through the company's wholly-owned Sperry Top-Sider specialty retail stores across the US and in premium department stores and specialty retailers across North America.
"These initiatives are critical next steps for Sperry Top-Sider as we aim to connect more broadly with our target consumer and continue our mission to create the leading nautical performance and lifestyle brand across the globe," said Gregg Ribatt, CEO of Collective Brands' Performance and Lifestyle group.
The company will partner with Manhattan Beachwear, hosiery manufacturer Refro Corporation, belt manufacturer Tandy Brands, Interbrand, which makes headwear, scarves and gloves, and US Continental Marketing, a manufacturer of leather and shoe care products in the US.
It said additional deals are also pending with product categories including eyewear and watches, among others.
The licensees will work with Sperry's design and marketing teams to create their collections. Each partner will then be responsible for marketing and distribution.

CRAiLAR Flax
Naturally Advanced Technologies has announced a partnership with Tuscarora Yarns to explore a range of blended yarns using CRAiLAR Flax.
As part of the agreement, Tuscarora Yarns will design and manufacture CRAiLAR Flax for sale and distribution to third-party licensees of CRAiLAR.
The CRAiLAR enzymatic process, which was developed by Naturally Advanced Technologies in partnership with the National Research Council of Canada, turns natural bast fibers such as flax, hemp, jute and kenaf into soft finished textiles that are as "comfortable as cotton, but more durable and eco-friendly".
"Tuscarora is one of the most innovative yarn spinners in the world, and has the ability to prepare us for entry into several unexplored categories such as couture fashion, sports performance, extreme weather gear, and certain sectors of home furnishings," said Naturally Advanced Technologies CEO Ken Barker.
"This agreement will seek to push the applications of CRAiLAR beyond our first phase of cotton blending and establish new market sectors for this unique and sustainable natural fiber."
Since March 2011, Naturally Advanced Technologies has entered agreements for CRAiLAR Flax fiber with HanesBrands, Georgia-Pacific, Levi Strauss, Cintas, Carhartt, Ashland, Westex, Brilliant Global Knitwear and Target.
