Shop Direct to Cut 1500 Jobs
UK home shopping firm Shop Direct Group is planning to close its Sunderland, Newtown and Burnley call centers with the possible loss of 1,500 jobs, amid declining telephone sales.
Shop Direct also intends to add up to 350 new roles at its remaining sites.
The company, which owns the Littlewoods and Woolworths brands, said customers have become "increasingly self-sufficient," preferring to buy online.
It said less than four years ago 33m calls were taken through its contact centers, compared to only 19m now, prompting this change in operational structure.
"Over the past five years, the proportion of our online sales has grown from 18% to account for over 60% of our business today resulting in excess capacity and space in our contact centers," said Mark Newton-Jones, chief executive of Shop Direct.
"We are a strong and growing business and we need to adapt to reflect the way our customers choose to shop with us."
The group aims to have at least 70% of its sales online by 2010/11.

Sexy Eco-Friendly Bra Hunt
After failing to come up with seductive 'green knickers', companies have given up. But, a new campaign has been launched which asks British women to design the world's first sexy eco-friendly bra.
At the moment, most ethical bras are made from plain and boring beige cotton.
Nicola Alexander of website daisygreenmagazine.co.uk who is launching the hunt said: "British women are sick of boring eco-friendly undies. They want a raunchy, frilly bra that makes them feel great and is good for the environment too."
The design which wins will go into production to be exported worldwide with a donation to charity from each bra sold.
Nicola said: "When we first announced our plans to make the ''best ever'' ethical bra, we were inundated with comments about the kind of bra readers wanted so we decided to give women everywhere the chance to tell us."
The 'ethical' bra is likely to be fairly made and from sustainable fabrics.
The website is hoping women will find a way to create a pretty bra which protects the planet.

Stirling Group in Administration
Lingerie and swimwear supplier Stirling Group, whose customers include retailers such as Marks & Spencer, has gone into administration with the loss of 47 jobs.
There are also doubts over the future of the remaining 150 employees at the Altrincham-based based firm unless a buyer is found.
Administrators at Deloitte said Stirling Group has suffered as a result of the recession and the "financial challenges that have impacted the economy as a whole."
"We will continue to trade the company as a going concern whilst actively exploring the options for sale. At present, we are also considering the position of employees at the business," said Bill Dawson, who is based at Deloitte's Manchester office.
He added: "We reviewed the current activity of the company and made a decision on the redundancies based on the resources that were needed to run
the business."
Stirling Group, which designs apparel, particularly knitwear and lingerie, also has a branch in Nottingham in the UK and sites in India, Morocco, Turkey, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and China.
After being listed on the London Stock Exchange for a quarter century, executives led by chief executive Steven Bentwood decided to take Stirling Group private in 2003.

NYPD Denies Shredding
  Counterfeit Clothing
Police forces who seized fake goods in New York deny claims they shredded knockoff garments instead of donating them to homeless charities during the second half of last year.
It follows a report by The New York Times, which said officials used an industrial shredder to destroy the counterfeit clothing and footwear.
However, city officials deny that the destruction of goods included clothing. The re-use of unwanted garments to homeless people in New York is under the spotlight after trash bags of unused garments were found by a reporter outside a H&M store this winter.
"Contrary to a published account, the last destruction of counterfeit products by the NYPD involved sunglasses, handbags, and not articles of clothing," Paul J Browne, deputy commissioner of the New York City Police Department was reported as saying.
Browne said that in December 2008, the NYPD donated two and a half tractor trailers full of counterfeit clothing that was no longer needed as evidence.
"As we always do, we responded to a NYC Department of Homeless Service request for the clothing and gave it to the agency for distribution to the needy," he said. "We honor all such requests from the Department of Homeless Services once clothing is no longer needed as evidence. We will continue to do so."

Subway to Ban No Pants Ride
South China's Guangzhou Subway Company says it will take measures to ban any form of "no pants subway ride" in future.
"The public can't accept the act of removing pants inside subway cars, and the act will frighten some passengers, so we will forbid any such act from now on," An official of Guangzhou Subway Company told local papers.
According to the report, early on Sunday, January 17, eighteen netizens gathered in a Guangzhou subway line two station and took the metro subway trains in their underwear to promote low-carbon activities before the Guangzhou Asian Games.
"The adult people calmly removed their pants beside my little daughter and I had to quickly cover her eyes. How rude is that?" a mother passenger said in a complaint to Guangzhou Subway Company, while the company said that they hadn't witnessed the incident and had been unable to stop the eighteen netizens in time.
Meanwhile, some netizens say the act is just a copy of other countries' annual "no pants subway rides" which are organized by Improve Everywhere, a group said to have a mission to promote "scenes of chaos and joy in public places".
"The move was not creative and there is no relationship between removing pants and environmental protection," one netizen said in an online post.
Furthermore, some netizens thought it was merely commercial hype.
Liang Shuxin, the organizer of the "no pants subway ride" in Guangzhou, admitted that their move was inspired by "no pants subway rides" in other countries.
"They (Improve Everywhere) have organized nine "no pants subway rides" and they have attracted more and more participants. Our act is just for entertainment. In addition, we also added factors of environmental protection and the Asian Games, so we are not just copying," Liang said.
Liang added the act was clearly a success since it had aroused such a big reaction in China and he wished to hold another event next year.
The report also noted that a pair of 400-gram trousers will consume 200 kilowatts per hour of energy in washing and drying, amounting to the emission of 47 kilograms of carbon dioxide.
