Louis Vuitton Wins Counterfeit
                   Battle

Luxury goods label Louis Vuitton has won another victory in its battle against fake goods with a court injunction against New York’s Canal Street landlords.
Owners of seven properties on the well-known "Canal Street Corridor" have agreed to take action to prevent the sale of counterfeit Louis Vuitton goods by their tenants.
In keeping with the terms of the deal, made through the US District Court for the Southern District of New York, the landlords will clearly post signs in and outside of all properties included in the case stating that the retailer is not authorized to sell Louis Vuitton merchandise.
The landlords will also provide full access to, and pay the cost of, a, court-appointed monitor to conduct frequent searches of both public and private areas of the buildings to prevent the sale of any counterfeit Louis Vuitton goods, add a provision to lease contracts banning the sale of counterfeit goods on the premises, and immediately move to evict any tenant found to be in possession of fake Louis Vuitton products.
Louis Vuitton previously entered into similar legally binding agreements with two landlords in 2005. There are now 18 buildings along the Canal Street Corridor - an area widely recognized as a haven for counterfeiters - covered by the injunctions, which include frequent monitoring to prevent the possession and distribution of goods infringing on the brand's intellectual property rights.
Nathalie Moulle Berteaux, director of intellectual property development for Louis Vuitton’s parent group LVMH said: "The momentum we are gaining in our relentless fight against counterfeiting is tremendous, not only in the US but also in other marketplaces worldwide
"By working closely with law enforcement authorities and other trademark holders and compelling those aiding and abetting counterfeiters to accept responsibility for the counterfeiters' criminal actions, we are putting a stranglehold on the distribution of fake goods.
"Those seeking to purchase counterfeit Louis Vuitton goods on Canal Street must now face the danger of following a stranger down a dark alley, or stairway, to a hidden room, which serves as a both deterrent to shoppers who fear for their safety, and a strong reminder that the sale of counterfeits is a crime."
Berteaux said that there was still much work to be carried out in the battle against fakes and that the company was expanding the program locally, as seen with the recent victory against the owner and operator of Beijing's "Silk Street" shopping mall.

              Sharing Dinner
An elderly couple visit McDonalds. He orders one hamburger, one order of french fries and one
drink. The old man unwraps the plain hamburger and carefully cuts it in half. He places one half in front of his wife. He then carefully counts out the french fries, dividing them into two piles and neatly placing one pile in front of his wife. He takes a sip of the drink, his wife takes a sip and then sets the cup down between them. As he begins to eat his few bites of hamburger, the
people around them keep looking over and whispering. You could tell they were thinking, "That poor old couple - all they can afford is one meal for the two of them."
As the man begins to eat his fries a young man comes to the table. He politely offers to buy another meal for the old couple. The old man says they are just fine - They are used to sharing everything. The surrounding people notice the little old lady hasn't eaten a bite. She sits there watching her husband eat and occasionally takes turns sipping the drink. Again the young man comes over and begs them to let him buy another meal for them. This time the old woman says "No, thank you, we are used to sharing everything."
As the old man finishes and is wiping his face neatly with the napkin, the young man again comes over to the little old lady who has yet to eat a single bite of food and asks "What is it you are waiting for?"
She answers...."THE TEETH."

Cold-Weather Underwear
             Recycled
Patagonia, the California outdoor gear and apparel manufacturer known for its support of environmental causes, wants the worn out cold-weather underwear. It will turn the old garments into fibers for use in new clothing.
Since September, customers have been able to return their old cold-weather underwear – sold under the Capilene range – to Patagonia by mail or at any of its stores. The used garments are then sent to Japan to begin their transformation into new ones.
The company says the Common Threads Recycling Program will reduce the use of petroleum-derived virgin polyester fibers and keep large quantities of old clothing out of landfills. This recycling initiative makes Patagonia one of the first companies in the world to launch a garment take-back recycling program.
“Our goal is to take responsibility for every product we make. This includes responsibility for the fibers a garment is made of, as well as what happens to a product at the end of its useful life. Garment recycling is simply our first step towards a truly environmentally-sound process,” said Patagonia president and chief executive officer Michael Crooke.
Patagonia has a long history in environmental conservation. In 1993, it pioneered the use of making fleece for jackets and sleeping bags from plastic soft-drink bottles.
The company says using recycled fibers in making new Capilene boxer shorts, pullovers and pants will result in an energy savings of 76% and a 71% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.
For the recycling program, Patagonia tied up with Japanese fabrics manufacturer Teijin Fibers Ltd, known for establishing the world’s first chemical recycling technologies for plastic fibers, films and bottles.
At Teijin’s recycling facility in Matsuyama, the collected garments are first shredded into small pieces, then granulated and formed into small pellets. These are then broken down and purified to produce the raw material for polyester. The raw material is polymerized and turned into polyester chips, then melted and spun into filament fibers for new polyester fabrics to be reincarnated into new garments ready for another round of alpine skiing or bike rides.
The garments collected so far will only be incorporated into the Spring 2007 Capilene line since Patagonia’s production cycle is approximately 18 months. But this fall, Patagonia will launch a new Capilene line with over 50% recycled content.
Patagonia assures customers that clothing made from recycled garments are not contaminated since they have been sanitized. The quality of the new recycled fiber is the same as virgin polyester since the recycling process breaks the fiber down to the basic building blocks of polyester monomers.

  Khushboo To Sue Maxim
An Indian actress who sparked outrage by saying Indians should not expect brides to be virgins said she planned to sue Maxim magazine for publishing a photograph of her face above the body of a scantily dressed woman.
Khushboo said representatives of the British men's magazine had called her to apologize for the photograph, which appeared in the publication's inaugural Indian edition this month.
The photograph showed a woman in a transparent bra and panties and was clearly doctored and stamped with the message "100 per cent fake." A quote beneath the photograph declared her a virgin, but made clear she was no sexual innocent.
"The photo and language used are in bad taste," she said. "I'm really upset and angry ... I'm not going to let them go scott free." "The damage has already been done. My lawyers will file a case next week," she said.
Khushboo's lawyer, R. Karthikeyan, said the actress would file a defamation suit and lodge an obscenity complaint against the magazine's British publishers and the editors of the Indian edition. Each charge carries a maximum penalty of two years in prison.
"They may say it's 100 percent fake, but will a common man know?" said Karthikeyan. "The foreign publishers can't escape liability. It's published in India and against an Indian citizen."
Xavier Collaco, the publisher of Maxim's Indian edition, said the magazine had no intention of belittling Khushboo, adding the magazine was meant to be an "overall light read for men." "We'd like this to be resolved amicably," he said.
Khushboo said Maxim's publishers probably thought she was an easy target after she made headlines in September for telling an Indian magazine that society needs to rid itself of the expectation that brides be virgins. She later apologized for the remarks, which offended sections of this deeply conservative society. Local editions of Western magazines are increasingly common in India, though sexual content is scaled back for more conservative Indian readers.
