Additional Gas Cuts for Pakistan's Textile Sector
Pakistan's textile and apparel firms have expressed their concerns at government plans to cut gas supplies to the industry as the start of the winter season puts further pressure on supplies.
Temperatures are already falling in the northern part of the country including Punjab, Khyber Pakhtun Khawa, and Azad Kashmir.
The Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited this week said gas supplies will remain suspended for four-days a week - and the industry now fears a complete closure as temperatures drop.
Rana Arif Tauseef, chairman, of the Pakistan Textile Exporters Association, and Chaudhry Salamat Ali, chief coordinator and former chairman of the Pakistan Hosiery Manufacturers and Exporters Association, are to organize protests against the increasing gas cuts for the industry.
Tauseef also warned that shipments worth of US$4m destined to the EU and US are under threat.
Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry believes a total shutdown in gas supplies could be imminent - and would put the jobs of over 15m people and exports of around US$14bn at stake.
Seth Muhammad Akber, acting chairman of the All Pakistan Textile Mills Association, is urging the government to honor its commitment of four-days-a-week gas supply to textile industry.
While Dr Asim Hussain, the federal minister for petroleum and natural resources, had earlier assured the industry that there is no intention to completely stop the gas supply to the textile industry during the winter, the government is under no obligation to provide gas during the months of December, January and February.
Around 75% of the textile plants in the northern part of Pakistan run gas fired power plants.

FDI Reforms Suspended
India's ruling Congress Party confirmed that plans to allow more foreign investment in the country's retail sector have been suspended.
Speaking in the Indian parliament, Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee gave official confirmation that the reforms, which have led to fierce opposition among parts of India's political elite, were not going to be forced through.
He said: "The decision to permit 51% FDI in retail trade is suspended until a consensus is developed through consultation among various stakeholders."
It emerged that the Indian government was planning to put its reforms, announced last month, on hold.
On December 3, Mamata Banerjee, chief minister of the state of West Bengal and leader of the All India Trinamool Congress
party, the second-largest party in India's ruling coalition, said the government had suspended a decision on the reforms "until and unless there is a consensus of all parties on the matter". December 7, however, was the first official confirmation that the reforms were being suspended.
Mukherjee said the Indian government would now consult all stakeholders, including the chief ministers of all states and political parties, before going ahead with the policy.
Under the plans, announced November 24, foreign companies would be able to own 51% of multi-brand retail stores. The Indian government claimed the reforms would create jobs and modernize the country's supply chain. As the ruling was made by the cabinet, it did not to go to a parliamentary vote.
Opponents of greater foreign investment, including key government allies like Banerjee, were furious about the move and began a series of protests that caused parliamentary proceedings to grind to a halt. They claim giving retailers like Wal-Mart Stores, Tesco and Carrefour greater access to Indian's retail market would cripple local businesses.
Sudip Bandhopadhyay, leader of the Trinamool Congress, which strongly opposed the FDI reforms, said after the meeting: "It has been accepted. Whatever you may want to call it, holdback or rollback, it is not being implemented."
Some opposition politicians said it signaled the death knell of
the proposals.
Jon Copestake, retail industry analyst at the Economist Intelligence Unit, described the move as "a blow" for global retailers.
He also believes that resurrecting the bill could prove difficult given the timing. State elections are looming next year and weak economic signs in September have made opposition voices difficult to ignore.
"Even if this is just a temporary setback it could prove costly," he adds. "Domestic players such as RP-Sanjiv Goenka Group, Future Group and Bharti Retail will have to wait for planned funding or tie-ins with international partners, which will hamper growth plans in the coming year."

Cotton Production to Fall
The global cotton area is forecast to fall by 8% in 2012/13 Cotton experts have lowered their estimates for cotton production for next season as falling prices lead farmers to focus on alternative crops - but say rising mill use and lower cotton prices could fuel a rebound in world cotton trade.
The forecast from Inter-governmental group the International Cotton Advisory Committee (ICAC) comes after cotton prices jumped to a record high of US$1.64 per pound in 2010/11, but dropped sharply in the current season.
For the first time in three years, it says, the crop is less attractive than the main alternatives. As a result, the Secretariat projects global cotton area to fall by 8% in 2012/13 to 33.3m hectares and production to drop by 6% to 25.1m tons.
Cotton production is expected to decline in most large producing countries, with the exceptions of the US, Uzbekistan, and Australia.
However, after two seasons at depressed levels, global cotton mill use is forecast to start growing again in 2012/13 - providing there is a recovery in global economic growth that boosts purchases of textile products and consumption of raw fibres. Largely driven by demand in Asia, global cotton mill use could rise by 3% in 2012/13 to 25.0m tons.
Together, rising mill use and lower cotton prices could fuel a rebound in world cotton trade in 2012/13.
Imports and exports are expected to jump by 9% to 8.4m tons. As global production and consumption are expected to roughly balance in 2012/13, global cotton stocks are forecast to increase only slightly, to 11.6m tons.

             DirectorySexy
Is not your typical online lingerie directory. Included are links to social networks, images, categories of lingerie styles, sizes, and much more all the while including contact and company information.
Daniel Kraus, owner and creator said, "DirectorySexy grew out of a frustration I had in finding lingerie for my girlfriend. I was tired of web searches that all led to same sites and stores. So I decided to create a site that would list designers and boutiques according to major categories. Along the way I added categories for bra styles, panty styles, corset styles, lingerie styles, shapewear styles, and occasions.
Designer entries can indicate what countries their designs and products are sold in while boutiques can indicate what designers they carry in stock. There are now over 50 categories any lingerie boutique or designer may be listed under.
In addition, each designer and boutique can list their social networking sites, location, display their logo, supply a description of their company, include a biography and company history, links to their site, a specialty (should they have one), contact information and an image gallery. Currently there are over 200 companies listed on DirectorySexy from over 20 different countries. A set of "Lingerie Services" categories as well as bra sizes, panty sizes, price ranges and average bra price data is also being added.
Lingerie consultants, experts and publications also have their own directories to supply industry professionals with more information and possible networking. Each of these has their own set of categories to make searching and browsing simpler and easier.
Registration on the site requires either a $50.00 one-time fee or a link to DirectorySexy and is performed through a downloadable PDF form. Online registration is currently being worked on as well as user registration, interactions and owner control over their company's directory entry.
"Directory Sexy is an incredible resource," said Luis Paredes, publisher of The Lingerie Journal. "It's more than just a list of lingerie companies. The way Daniel has built Directory Sexy allows companies to effectively brand their listing, showcase their offerings and make a connection with the customers searching for them."

Mislabeled Garments
          Fail Tests
Spanish retailer Zara has again been accused of selling "sub-standard" clothes in China after tests were said to have found garments labeled with incorrect fiber content.
The claims, reported by China Daily, come seven months after
parent Inditex admitted that labeling on some Zara men's
trousers tested by the Beijing Consumer Association (BCA) did not disclose the acrylic and viscose content.
Zara's Quality Control Department is working to correct this and to avoid it for the future," Inditex said at the time.
But now it seems similar tests by the Shanghai Municipal Bureau of Quality and Technical Supervision found the fiber content on a batch of Zara cardigans did not match the label. Other brands including Nautica, CK Jeans and TeenieWeenie were also said to have failed the tests.

Lejaby Receives Second
        Takeover Bid
A second takeover bid submitted for insolvent French lingerie maker Lejaby comes from a UK-registered company, Pacific Junction Corporation, acting on behalf of an unidentified French firm currently being set up.
The bid is said to propose retaining 220 of Lejaby's 450 staff.
However, given that the deadline for bids passed on November 30, a bankruptcy judge will now consider whether this new offer is receivable.
The other bid comes from Grenoble-based investment fund Abcia, and makes provision to retain 135 staff.
The commercial court of Lyon is scheduled to examine bids for
Lejaby on December 22.
Lejaby puts its difficulties down to a significant shrinking in the multi-brand retailer channel, the main outlet for its products.
The lingerie firm, which closed three of its four French production sites at the end of last year, posted a loss of EUR2.7m (US$3.6m) for the 2010/2011 financial year.
Restructuring at the company has also entailed almost 200 jobs cuts and the transfer of production to North Africa.

Men, Fear and Marriage
The British had an organization that Americans are now considering adopting.
It seems that in England, they had a men's club, Bachelors' Anonymous. It was highly successful in making men fear or even hate marriage.
The club provided a unique way to treat the problem of bachelors wanting to marry. They send over a mother-in-law in nightgown, hair curlers, and a mud pack.

A Jolly Holiday for
   Online Retailers
According to comScore.com, online holiday spending so far this year is over $25 Billion, up 15% over last year. That is no small number and if you don’t have an online store you’ve missed out on a significant opportunity. Online sales have been increasing significantly over the past 15 plus years. That trend is not going to change anytime soon. Does this mean that brick and mortar is fading away? No, but what it does mean is that if you are a brick and mortar you need to have an online strategy that has synergy with your physical store. They should not be seen as two separate businesses, but should be fully integrated. You should be using an online store to further connect to your brick and mortar store customers and vice versa. You don’t want your brick and mortar customers going to someone else’s online store to shop, as you may lose a customer. Keep your customers by giving them what they want, a way to purchase from you no matter where and when they want the products you sell, an online store will help you do that.

At Gozooko, the customer always comes first. Our lines of products are customer driven, and our goal is to meet your needs and to help your business grow. As always we welcome your comments and suggestions. We look forward to hearing from you. GozookoGuys@gozooko.com

"This is a real honor and a pleasant surprise," says a humbled and semi-shocked Garland. "This of course means a lot to me and Eldorado – it’s an unbelievable feeling to have this kind of recognition from my peers and I would sincerely like to thank everyone involved. Who knew I’d be inducted into AVN's Hall of Fame for a non-performing role?" Garland says with a chuckle.
In addition to heading up Eldorado since 1974, Garland is a board member of the Free Speech Coalition, and a vocal advocate for his local community. For the last several years, Eldorado has held fundraisers and food drives for the Community Food Share program, helping put Thanksgiving dinner on the table for thousands of Colorado families in need.

La Senza May Face
         Restructuring
Lingerie retailer La Senza is thought to be the latest victim of tough trading conditions on the UK high street after reportedly calling in accountancy firm KPMG to advise on a range of restructuring options.
The company, which was acquired by private equity firm Lion Capital in 2006, is said to be considering selling some of its assets or even going into administration, news reports say.
According to Lion Capital, La Senza operates a network of over 200 retail outlets in the UK and Ireland, with franchises in 14 countries across Europe. It employs over 2,600 people and in its most recent fiscal year generated sales of GBP140m.
The private equity firm also has stakes in international fashion brand AllSaints and American Apparel.
The news comes after the owner of the Barratts and Priceless Shoes footwear shops collapsed into administration last week following a downturn in trading, putting nearly 4,000 jobs at risk.
UK clothing and footwear retailer Blacks Leisure is also seeking a buyer for the firm or one of its brands. The company owns the Millets and Blacks Outdoor stores as well as the Peter Storm and Eurohike brands.
And rumors are also circulating that the Peacocks discount fashion chain may close some 200 stores as it looks to restructure around GBP240m (US375m) in debts.

     Seminar Schedule
AVN Network is pleased to announce that the seminar schedule for January's Adult Entertainment Expo (AEE) and Adult Novelty Expo (ANE) has been released and posted to the website for each event, available here and here.

The schedule also includes a first-ever joint keynote address by LFP Executive VP Theresa Flynt and Hustler President Michael Klein, which takes place Friday, Jan. 20 from 2 to 3 p.m.
For attendees from the novelty sector, seminar offerings include Not in My Backyard (Jan 18, 10-11 a.m.), which looks at the current state of brick-and-mortar zoning laws, and What's in Your Sex Toy? (Jan 19, 10-11 a.m.) which explores the ingredients that go into making sex toys.

For AEE attendees, the schedule of seminars is equally concentrated on subjects of interest to members of the industry, from legal issues and concerns about piracy and testing for performers to the making of porn parodies and the exploration of new opportunities in mobile.
Seminars include The Perils and Potentials of Parody Porn, featuring a stellar panel of performers and directors who consistently breathe new creative life into the niche and The Nuts and Bolts of APHSS, which explores the inner working of the industry's newest testing facilities.
The AEE Power Players panel, like its novelty counterpart, features acknowledged leaders in the industry sharing their expertise with others. And of course, Michael Klein brings an astonishing level of hands-on knowledge about broadcast, production and web issues to bear in his part of the AEE/ANE keynote address.
"As always, the January shows will be abuzz with show activity, in exhibit halls as well as throughout the hotel, but we hope that the educational lineup this year will also pique the interest of our attendees and inspire them to take the time to participate in these special events," said AVN senior editor Tom Hymes.

Filling In
A famous professor of surgery died and went to heaven. At the pearly gate he was asked by the gatekeeper: 'Have you ever committed a sin you truly regret?'
'Yes,' the professor answered. 'When I was a young candidate at the hospital of Saint Lucas, we played soccer against at team from the Community Hospital, and I scored a goal, which was off-side. But the referee did not see it so, and the goal won us the match. I regret that now.'
'Well,' said the gatekeeper. 'That is a very minor sin. You may enter.'
'Thank you very much, Saint Peter,' the professor answered.
'I am not Saint Peter,' said the gatekeeper. 'He is having his lunch break. I am Saint Lucas.'

Warning! The Wrong Bra May Be
     Hazardous To Your Health
Every day like clockwork, Kate got a headache. It usually started during the late morning, as her workday intensified, when she felt as if her chest were being squeezed—which it was. Why? Her bra was too tight—as always. Kate didn’t even realize that her too-small band was the culprit; she just knew that her performance at work was suffering and that she came home every day too drained to play with her three small children. To make matters worse, she went to bed every night feeling exhausted, frustrated, and guilty.
Laura trudged to her chiropractor every Friday to get an adjustment. She was tired of spending the time and money at the doctor each week, but her chronic back pain left her no other option. Her large breasts were heavy, and continuously carrying all of that weight with her shoulders had made her back condition worse. She felt a touch of relief each weekend, but by Monday morning she was hurting again and pining for her Friday appointment. All week long, as her bra straps bit into her shoulders, Laura was reminded of the source of her discomfort.
From high up in the bleachers where no one could detect the dejection on her face, Jennifer watched the girls on her high school basketball team celebrate another win. Part of her wanted to be back on the team with her friends, but thinking about being called “Jiggly Jenny” was even more painful than running up and down the court. Since freshman year, when her basketball skills began being compromised by her growing—and unsupported— chest, Jenny faced increasing flack for her changing physical appearance. As her breasts grew larger and she struggled to find the right bra to support them, even some of her teammates used the hated nickname. Jennifer was not only losing out on the chance to play basketball; she was losing her positive self-image.
Kate, Laura, and Jennifer have all suffered needlessly and prove that wearing the wrong bra can be hazardous to your health for many reasons. Whether it’s too tight, too big, or just doesn’t fit right, the consequences can have a real impact on your physical health.
The consequences of poor bra fit include tension in the shoulders, upper back, neck, and head. The upper body may become strained to a point that ultimately causes poor posture. If a bra band is too tight, a woman might get headaches or mistakenly put pressure on her lungs. Women who carry the weight of their breasts in the bra straps can cause permanent divots in their shoulders. In extreme cases, a hump in the back, between the shoulders, can arise from improper weight distribution.
Many women report skin irritation, rashes, and infection from sweat and friction. These can be extremely uncomfortable – and are avoidable when wearing a bra that fits properly.
The most common side effects are the ones most women tend to fear the most, namely, sagging and vertical stretch marks.
The British Chiropractic Association has warned that “wearing the wrong bra size can lead to a number of problems, including back pain, restricted breathing, abrasions, breast pain and poor posture.” Independent medical and scientific studies, both in the United Kingdom and here in the States, have attested to the difficulties of getting the fit right and the implications of getting it wrong.
The good news is that no matter how uncomfortable a woman feels in her bra every day, and even those who have already experienced some of the physical or emotional problems associated with poor fit, it’s never too late to start reversing the process. Finding a bra that fits properly is the first step to positive change, which gives retailers the opportunity to help women both look and feel better.

Five Ways to Improve
     Holiday Sales
                     by Holly Jackson
Creating A Lingerie Description
             Template
Occasionally, I’m hired to come in and organize the writing on a client’s website. Clients are usually interested in optimizing their descriptions: they provide lots of SEO, and actually convince people to buy the item they’ve found.

In some cases, I end up creating a description template for my client to work with in the future. While you can hire a copywriter to do this quickly and easily, you can also do it yourself. Creating a template for your descriptions will help you analyze what you’re saying and how to make sure you’re putting the right message across each and every time. It can also help you get a handle on your SEO if you feel like you’re swimming in hundreds of potential keywords.

In this two part series, I’m going to start by talking about product descriptions in general, and then move onto how to create a template for your descriptions.

Here are some key concepts to keep in mind when you write your product descriptions:

1. Longer is usually better.

I have a great SEO friend who always reminds her clients that while you can pack a lot of keywords into a small sentence, you always get better results with longer blocks of text. It also gives you more room to show off your product.

The downside is that longer chunks of text are harder to organize, but we’ll cover how your description template will help with that in the second part of the series. For now, just keep in mind that sometimes using a paragraph when a sentence will do is the right way to go.

2. Never copy a description from a retailer.

Google’s algorithm is constantly changing, but they’ve begun a shift towards requiring original content on any well-rated site. This means that copying descriptions from a brand or retailer will lead to your site being ranked lower than it would otherwise. As a copywriter, I’m really happy that Google is leading the charge when it comes to creative content, but I also know that many retailers are legitimately worried about the repercussions of this new update. Remember, you don’t have to write like Shakespeare to write a great description. You also don’t have to write an essay. However you decide to go about it, make sure that your descriptions are written with as many of your own words as possible.

3. Don’t stress out too much about keywords.

SEO is important for a website, but making your keywords work within the context of your content is actually more important than how many keywords you use. If you’re struggling with figuring out which keywords to use, step back and think like a customer. How are they searching for sizes or styles of lingerie? Do they think in terms of knickers or panties? Do they identify as full-figured or full-busted? When you get stuck, let your customers be your guide.

4. Don’t forget the obvious.

When I optimize descriptions, this is what I spend the most time on. If it’s an underwire bra, you need to say that in the description. Even if the name of the bra makes it absolutely clear, providing that extra detail in the description will give your customers clarity and help you build in an extra keyword. The same rule applies for various styles of bras, colors, and different types of lingerie. It may seem obvious to you, but your customers and the search engines will love you for it.

Wal-Mart's Corruption Probe
Wal-Mart Stores has started a probe into bribery allegations in its operations outside the US after an internal investigation.
In a filing to the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), the world's biggest retailer said it had begun a "voluntary internal review" of its policies in relation to its global anti-
corruption compliance program. It is not known in which of the 28 countries Wal-Mart operates in the review applies to.
The filing said: "As a result of information obtained during that review and from other sources, the company has begun an internal investigation into whether certain matters, including permitting, licensing and inspections, were in compliance with the US Foreign Corrupt Practices Act."
The law makes it illegal for US citizens to bribe a foreign official. The company added that it has contacted the US Department of Justice and the SEC about its investigation, and that is implementing "remedial measures" and has brought in lawyers and other advisors to assist in the review.
It also added that it does not foresee it having a "a material adverse effect on our business, financial condition, results of operations or cash flows".
Wal-Mart has a "Statement of Ethics" on its website, which states: "We do not tolerate, permit, or engage in bribery, corruption, or unethical practices of any kind. Bribery of public officials in the US and abroad is illegal under both US law and the local law of the countries in which we operate."

Avitera SE Eco-friendly
      Dyes Expanded
Dyes and chemicals maker Huntsman Textile Effects has expanded its Avitera SE range of eco-friendly dyes so it now features a broad palette color spectrum ranging from the palest to the deepest and the darkest shades.
The polyreactive dyes for exhaust application on cellulosic fibers were initially launched in October 2010.
They help processors reduce water and energy consumption and CO2 emissions by keeping the dyeing and washing-off process below 60°C. And because less than 5% of the unfixed dye needs to be removed - instead of the usual 15-30% - fewer rinsing baths are required to obtain fastness.
Huntsman has calculated that the cotton mills using Avitera SE saved 32m gallons (121m litres) of fresh water - equivalent to 48 Olympic-size swimming pools - in the first six months after its launch.
The savings are significant as up to 26 gallons (100 liters) of water is needed to dye just two pounds (one kilogram) of cotton fabric.

Catching the Fish
Jim had an awful day fishing on the lake, sitting in the blazing sun all day without catching a single one. On his way home, he stopped at the supermarket and ordered four catfish. He told the fish salesman, "Pick four large ones out and throw them at me, will you?"
"Why do you want me to throw them at you?"
"Because I want to tell my wife that I caught them."
"Okay, but I suggest that you take the orange roughy."
"But why?"
"Because your wife came in earlier today and said that if you came by, I should tell you to take orange roughy. She prefers that for supper tonight."

An Interview with Period Corsets®:
     The Corset Makers For the
   Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show

While the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show is often seen as an hour-long commercial for America’s most famous lingerie store, the show also features work from smaller, more independent artisans. While corsets were shown prominently on the runway both this year and last year, Victoria’s Secret isn’t really known for making the kind of authentic, steel boned corsets we know and love. So when Victoria’s Secret wants to use a corset in their annual fashion show, who do they call? They call Period Corsets.
Founded in 1997 by Rebecca Kaufman and Susan Davis, Seattle-based Period Corsets has been the official corsetiere for Victoria’s Secret for three now, and I am incredibly excited to feature these talented designers on the blog in an exclusive Lingerie Addict interview. Please don’t forget check out their Etsy store and take a moment to tell them what you think of their work in the comments! We’ve got lots to talk about right now though, so let’s get started with the interview.

1) I’ve often admired the corset work during the annual Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show, so it’s a real delight to talk to the corset makers behind the beautiful pieces we see on the runway. Thank you for making the time for an interview on The Lingerie Addict. Let’s start with the question that I’m sure is on everyone’s mind…how did you begin working with Victoria’s Secret? Did they approach and how did they first discover your work?
Thank you for interviewing us. It’s our pleasure.
The Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show approached us! In 2009, a few weeks before the show, their designers needed another outfit for Fergie of the Black Eyed Peas (the musical guest that year) and some options for the runway collection. Their designers were looking for a company they could trust to make high-quality, high-fashion corsets with a quick turnaround.
While Period Corsets® is based in Seattle and we make everything in our studio here, we are part of the network of New York costume houses and regularly partner with places like The Metropolitan Opera in New York City.
The Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show is a hybrid between costume and fashion, bringing together talented artists from all over to create the breathtaking looks you see on the runway – whether that’s 10-foot wings, “million-dollar bras” or one-of-a-kind corsets. Victoria’s Secret retail lingerie is woven throughout the fashion show, and what completes the look of each themed ensemble are the custom-made pieces. That’s where our corsets come in.

2) That’s really interesting…especially since most people don’t know that Victoria’s Secret employs artisans in that way. How many VS fashion shows have you created corsets for and how many corsets have you made for Victoria’s Secret in total?
We’ve worked on three Victoria’s Secret Fashion Shows, and the number of corsets has varied from 5 to 10 each year.
In 2009, time was of the essence so Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show designer Todd Thomas picked a few styles from our retail line of corsets and sent us the fabrics. He chose our c.1900 Lilly and a c.1860 Julia in emerald green silk taffeta as options for Fergie, and they decided on the under-bust Lilly style to construct a dress around.

Photo Credits: Jason DeCrow/ AP Victoria Secret Fashion Show 2009

The show also featured two more Lilly under-bust corsets; one in herring bone plaid and the other in a red metallic fabric with an overlay of black lace. We also patterned the under-bust version of our 1880’s Alice corset to be worn with a Victoria’s Secret bra. This corset was made out of an extremely narrow, creamy silver metallic brocade fabric that was so unusually delicate and luxurious, I am certain it was a vintage kimono fabric.

In 2010, we were fortunate to collaborate with Todd Thomas from the early development of the show. That year Heavenly Bodies, Tough Love, and Country were some of the design inspirations for the themed corsets, which were closer to wearable art than functional garments.
Working directly from Todd’s design sketches is a privilege; he is wonderfully creative with both his corset shapes and unconventional fabric choices. We made corsets out of a diamond-woven straw matting, wig lace, and cross-stitch embroidering canvas. It was exciting to find creative solutions for constructing corsets out of these vastly differing fabrics. The straw corset presented the most challenges. When completed, it was more molded into shape than it was sewn – when we finally top-stitched the seams into place, it held its shape so well that it barely needed the boning we put in! You can read about the construction process on our blog.

The Heavenly Bodies corset below is made of a wig lace–a sheer, impossibly delicate fabric intended for making wigs. It’s not what you might think would work for a corset, but perfect for a Victoria’s Secret Angel. You can read more about the construction of the wig lace corset here

The 2011 Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show has been by far the most thrilling and challenging for us. We made 10 corsets for several of the themes: Ballet, Angels Aquatic, and I Put a Spell on You. The designs are closely guarded secrets that are only unveiled on the runway. Once we send our corsets off to the show, there is excitement down to the last minute as we wait to see how things will turn out.
This year, Todd Thomas’ designs and fabric choices evoked the essence of fragility. They are “breath-taking for the moment.” These ephemeral corsets are for one night only like Cinderella at the ball.

For Angel’s Aquatic we made a transparent wig lace corset which the Victoria’s Secret design team then encrusted with coral and pearls.

We will post more of the behind the scenes magic; making these corsets from two- dimensional design sketches on our Facebook page and our blog after the show airs on November 29th.

3) Wow! That is a lot of detail. The wig lace and straw corsets are especially amazing. Which leads me to my next question…what kind of direction does Victoria’s Secret give you when it comes to making the corsets? Do you pretty much have free creative reign or is there a very specific vision you’re asked to stick to?
It is very much a collaborative process. We design our own products, but when we do custom work, we enjoy combining creative forces with other designers or people with imaginative ideas for their own one-of-a-kind corsets.
For the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show, Todd Thomas is the designer, and we are the technicians bringing his two-dimensional drawings to life on the runway. He gives us free reign to interpret his design sketches into the physical shapes that take into account how gravity and physics apply to the fabrics and the person wearing them.
We start the process in late spring when he sends us his gorgeous design sketches, and we confer on what corset style might work with each one. He either has a clear vision to use one of the styles in our retail line of corsets, a style we developed for a past show or a new pattern that we create. The collaboration continues right up to the finishing details.
For example, the Tough Love corset from the 2010 show (shown below) was our 18th century shape styled with a ragged hemline. The Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show team accented each bone channel with silver spiked studs.

The Country cross-stitch fabric corset was a pattern we developed to include hip gussets of vintage tatted lace and pleated chiffon. Their team cross-stitched the Victoria’s Secret logo. Whatever the choice of pattern, when you add the custom fabrics and final details you have something completely new and fresh.

4) It sounds like a complex process. How much time goes into making one of those corsets from start to finish?
Because we hand-make every corset we produce and are meticulous about the details, there are many steps that all take time. We make a sample to fit and critique; we true the pattern and develop a construction method. Only then do we start sewing the final garment. So the time varies based on the complexity and fabrics, but we want each corset to be a work of art.
We also spend a lot of time finding unique solutions for custom work. For example, the corsets in our retail line come with grommets in the back for a lace-up closure. In a fashion show, you don’t have time to unlace each grommet, so for the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show we developed a quick-change method that we call speed lacing and now use for all of their corsets.
There are also different levels of finishing to the corsets we send to the show. We send the corsets ready to fit and they do the final steps, whether it’s a bit of detailing or an extensive appliqué. Some are complete and they may only add a few accessories. Some get a lot of detail added before the show. For example, with our straw corset, they added sheaves of wheat and straw appliqué over the whole corset. In some cases the corsets are barely recognizable, but our shapes show through.

5) Do you personally fit any of the Victoria’s Secret Angels or is a remote fitting?
We make a pattern based on the design sketches and send a sample to the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show team to fit and give us feedback. When using styles we’ve made before, we make the corsets directly in the new fashion fabrics and send them ready for a final fit. All of our corsets have alteration points so they can be let out or taken in, which adds versatility for the final fitting and allows the corset to fit more than one model.

6) Amazing. How long have you been making corsets? And are there any other famous clients you can share with Lingerie Addict readers?
We have been making corsets since 1997. Over the years, Period Corsets’ retail line of historic corsets has grown to include 13 styles; each encapsulates the fashionable look of an era. We developed each corset by researching vintage corsets, historic photos and paintings and distilling a wide variety of examples from the time into one corset with classic simple lines. The distinctive attributes of these corsets are what have attracted the eyes of costume designers and stylists in the fashion world.
We’ve made corsets for celebrities, pop stars, opera singers, dames of the theatre and fashion models, including Madonna’s little lavender waist cincher corset for her “Sorry” video.

Mainly we make corsets for women everywhere who want unique, glamorous corsets of their own. Women all over have figured out they can make an elegant, sexy statement with their own signature corsets.
7) I love that you’re based in Seattle, especially since this isn’t an area many people associate with lingerie and corsetry. Are you very involved in the local lingerie, theatre, or burlesque scene?
Yes! At Period Corsets we make everything in our studio here in Seattle and are very proud to be part of the thriving theatre, performing arts, lingerie and custom clothier scene. We have supported Seattle non-profit performing arts organizations by donating a few corsets to their fundraising events.
In this economy we know how important it is to support businesses based in the US. In the apparel industry, especially, we all know how much cheaper it can be to buy things that come from other parts of the world. We prefer to buy our materials from domestic vendors. We also keep the needs of our amazing team of employees who have been with us since we started a high priority. We work hard to balance paying a living wage and providing benefits to our employees while keeping our corsets affordable for our customers.
We feel fortunate to be part of this amazing community. For instance, a shop manager from nearby theatre recently needed a few c. 1890 Theodora corsets for “The Importance of Being Earnest,” and she walked down the street to our studio to pick them up.
What expert advice would you have for my readers who are interested in buying their first corset?
We advise investing in a quality product made in the US from a company with great customer service. To get an idea about whether they really care about taking care of you and helping you find the right corset, you should do some research: Do they have happy clients and good feedback? Do they make the kind of corset you want? When you are buying something via the internet, you need to make sure you can communicate your ideas with a person on the other end. Call or email us and we’ll be happy to help you with any questions about your next corset.
9) It’s extremely cool that you make corsets for celebrities and the opera, but how would a “regular person” commission a corset from you? Do you accept commissions?
It is very easy! Go to www.periodcorsets.com  Choose your style, size and fabric and check out. We keep all of our styles in small to 2XL in stock and ready to ship within 7 business days. There is a size chart for you to determine your size after you’ve taken measurements. We are ready to help anytime from 9 to 5 Monday through Friday Pacific time. You can always email us at sales@periodcorsets.com with any questions; to double check that you’ve chosen the right size, to pick the style that might suit your needs best or to consult on having a one-of-a-kind corset made to measure.
If you commission a custom corset, we estimate two to three weeks. To start your custom order, look at www.periodcorsets.com to see if the corset you are looking for is one of our existing styles with a few alterations. Then peruse Period Corsets on Etsy, which will show you examples of the many ways we customize our corsets with fashion fabrics or by altering the style lines. We are also happy to look over your design sketch or to research images of your dream corset. Once you have an idea of what you want and the range of our products, you can email or call me to get a quote.
We treat every individual as we would a professional designer. Your imagination is the limit! We are happy to create whatever strikes our client’s fancy, whether it’s a corset in Harris tweed wool for a dashing steampunk gentleman, or a red silk corset for a college student who wants it to match her graduation robes.
As Lingerie Addict readers know, all of life is a stage and a runway when you have the right lingerie/corset. We love to hear your ideas so we can make your corset a perfect fit.
What great advice! Thank you so much for your time, and for the great behind-the-scenes interview. I hope we see your work at many Victoria’s Secret Fashion Shows to come!

The piece comes with a horned headband and mini pitchfork to top off the look.
“We were proud to have “The Dean” wear our sexy Devil costume that is traditionally a woman’s. To see it represented on him was absolutely hilarious,” said senior designer Elaine Carson. “It shows the versatility of our pieces and how a little creativity can result in a completely different look.”

pjur Med Premium Glide
  Makes the Grade in
  Neurodermatitis test
Over a period of four weeks, 20 male and female atopic dermatitis patients used the pjur med Premium glide in a clinical- dermatological test. The participants all applied the product at least once a week on their intimate area. The result is impressive: All participants confirmed that the skin-friendliness of the glide was “very good.”
Now, an official medical report underpins the positive experiences users have made with the pjur med products. pjur med Premium glide helps to alleviate skin problems and soothes skin irritations, reddening of the skin, or itches, so even people suffering from such ailments can enjoy sex without pains or itches and make intimate togetherness a pleasant, sensual experience again. It is particularly important for people with atopic dermatitis that their skin is relaxed, and with the pjur med Premium glide, the risk of infection of the stressed skin is also minimized.
The participants of the test had atopic dermatitis without eczema and, going into the test, they all stated that they suffered from symptoms such as strong itches, reddening of the skin, scaling, dryness of the skin and severe pains, particularly during intercourse.
Already after the first week, the participants found that the symptoms had improved considerably. After day 21, all the test persons stated that they no longer suffered from any of their complaints and that the symptoms had improved 100%.
Therefore, the test proves that pjur med is 100% skin-friendly and the perfect product for people with skin problems. None of the participants showed any signs of allergic reactions, and they were all convinced of the effectiveness of the product. Already after a few days, the irritated skin was much more relaxed, and the test persons rediscovered a sense of well-being when experiencing physical intimacy.
“We are in touch with many people with skin problems, and they told us about their relief and about the positive experiences they have made with our products. All that was missing was confirmation from an expert or an independent institute, so we commissioned the renowned “Dermatest” institute in Münster to carry out this test series. We are very proud of the results and will continue to recommend our product to people with skin problems,” says Alexander Giebel, CEO and founder of pjur group Luxembourg S.A.
On request, we can also send you information materials in digital form.

Ramatex Aims for
     Toxic-Free Future
Singapore based dyes and chemicals maker Huntsman Textile Effects is to work with textile and garment giant Ramatex in a bid to achieve zero discharge of hazardous chemicals - a target global fashion brands and retailers have set for their supply chains by 2020.
The move, Ramatex says, would make it the world's first textile company dedicated to and capable of helping the brands to deliver their commitments.
Adidas, C&A, H&M, Li Ning, Nike and Puma last month released details of a joint 'roadmap' outlining the steps they intend to take to achieve the zero discharge goal.
"It is clear that the joint roadmap is challenging and ambitious but represents an important first step in reducing the environmental impacts of the textile industry," said Ramatex chairman Mr Ma Wong Ching.
Vertically integrated Ramatex operates three fabric mills and 13 apparel factories over Singapore, Malaysia, Cambodia and China which cover the entire manufacturing process from spinning, knitting, dyeing and printing to garment export.
The company has always aimed to be socially responsible, ensuring its manufacturing processes embrace environmental protection, and being more sustainable in production by minimizing energy usage, adopting waste and water recycling and only using organic materials and compliant chemicals and dyes.

Pacific Sunwear to Close
           200 Stores
Retailer Pacific Sunwear of California is to close up to 200 under-performing stores after securing new credit agreements designed to help turn around the ailing business.
The US company, known for its PacSun brand, said 175 to 200 stores would close over the next 14 months.
Of these, the company said it would buy out the leases of about 75 stores at a cost of US$13m, complete short-term extensions for about 50 better performing outlets, and close about 115 more upon the expiration of their leases by the end of fiscal 2012.
Meanwhile, Pacific Sunwear has negotiated a five-year, $100m revolving credit facility with Wells Fargo Capital Finance and a five-year, $60m senior secured term loan funded by private equity group Golden Gate Capital.
A portion of the Golden Gate Capital loan would be used to fund the lease buyout payments, the company added.
“The combination of these transactions greatly enhances our financial and operating position, and is another critical step forward as we work to re-establish PacSun as a leading specialty retailer across the US,” said president and CEO Gary Schoenfeld.
“With the support from all of our major landlords, we can now focus on our targeted base of 550-600 better-performing stores and our enhanced merchandising and marketing strategies.”
The announcement came as Pacific Sunwear announced rising third quarter losses and falling sales.

"Green" Nylon Plant
Industrial biotechnology company Verdezyne Inc has opened its
first pilot plant to produce 'green' nylon for use in a range of
products including clothing and other textiles.
The plant in Carlsbad, California will make adipic acid, a key
component of nylon 6,6. The bio-based adipic acid is one of two
components used in the production of 'green' nylon 6,6 and is
derived from renewable sources like non-food based vegetable
oils.
"We are excited to achieve this key milestone," said Dr E
William Radany, president and CEO of Verdezyne. "This is the
first demonstration of the production of bio-based adipic acid
at scale from a non-petroleum source. Our novel yeast platform
enables production of adipic acid at a lower cost than current
petrochemical manufacturing processes."
As well as lower production costs, Verdezyne says its method for
producing adipic acid offers a number of advantages over
petroleum-based alternatives.
The company's yeast fermentation process uses non-food, plant-
based feedstocks to produce a variety of commercial diacids. And
its production methods are expected to generate less CO2 and
other pollutants as compared with incumbent methods.

ALSA To Reduce Carbon
         Footprint
Turkish acrylic fiber producer Aksa Akrilik Kimya Sanayi AS (AKSA) is to improve its environmental performance and boost plant and worker safety after securing a US$50m loan from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development.
The total cost of the improvements at AKSA's plant in Yalova, in north-western Turkey, stands at around US$60m. The project will also help Aksa reduce its carbon footprint and, it is hoped, will raise standards in the Turkish industry.

Curry and Queenin will be on hand at the Sportsheets booth (No. 38, 39 and 54) during the ANME Founders Show Jan. 7-8 and the Xbiz Retail Show Jan. 9-10 in Burbank, Calif., where the two newest staff members will make their official debut to the industry. The company's Sex&Mischief line has been nominated in the BDSM Pleasure Products Company of the Year, Marketing Campaign of the Year, and Excellence in Product Packaging categories and Curry and Queenin said they were thrilled that their debut will also be a great moment for the Sex & Mischief line and Sportsheets as a company.
They may be reached at Cheri@sportsheets.com and Joanne@sportsheets.com respectively.
