Mayo Sets World Record
Mayo has set a new world record. Last Saturday, in swirling November mists on the slopes of Croagh Patrick, 300 volunteers hooked together around 5,000 bras, creating a chain 2,150 feet high.
Breast cancer awareness campaigners were joined by volunteers from all over Ireland to carry the bras to the top of Mayo’s holiest mountain and unfurl the
multicolored chain from the summit to the foot at Murrisk.
The record-setting crew was headed by John Maughan, who masterminded the operation and ensured the chain made it to the top of the mountain. There was some initial concern about a lack of volunteers to get the chain all the way down the slopes, but determined
organizers from Mayo Cancer Support Association and the Rock Chicks managed to rope in every casual visitor and onlooker to make sure the record was set.
The unique climb began at 9am with an ecumenical blessing from Fr Denis Carney and Rev Gary Hastings, who described the event as an expression of solidarity with cancer sufferers everywhere.
Teresa Burke Gillespie of the Rock Chicks, was on hand with barrels of bras that volunteers had spent days hooking together in preparation for the event. With an advance team of experienced climbers including Mary
Beston, Jar-lath Kelly, Tom Dempsey, Michael Gavin, Catherine Brennan, and father and son John and Con Doherty, the entire chain was in place just before noon. Con Doherty, who is just 13, was among the youngest of the volunteers, and counted Saturday’s climb of Croagh Patrick as his 12th. Cllr Paddy McGuinness was among the first to reach the summit and Kilmeenabased
councilor Johnno O’Malley also scaled the slopes.
The event generated huge good will with donations from Wonderbra and Playtex, as well as the support of Curves
Castlebar. Mayo Civil Defence, Mayo Mountain Rescue and the Order of Malta were on hand to co-ordinate the climb and ensure that everybody who scaled the slopes came down again safely.
Bra chain instigator, Louise Killeen of the Rock Chicks, was jubilant after the climb.
“We’ve now achieved the record for the highest bra chain. It’s never been done before, and it might never be done again!” the Castlebar woman said. “There’s lots of different fundraising and awareness events happening all over the county in connection with the bra chain. We haven’t totaled the amount up yet, but what’s been raised from the climb is going to Mayo Cancer Support Association. Cancer Care West is working in conjunction with them to create the longest bra chain. The funds raised from that will be divided between the two charities.”
With one world record in the bag, the campaigners are gearing up to enter the Guinness Book of Records with the longest bra chain ever made.
“We’ll decide this week when we will go for the world record for the longest bra chain. We might do it at the weekend or during the following week. If not then, we’ll put it off until early in the New Year. We’re going to use the grounds of Westport House. We’ll do a loop of maybe eight miles, and then do that nine times to make 72 miles of bras. It has to be over the 70-mile mark to break the record. That’s around 120,000 bras.”

Lingerie model Karolina Kurkova has been voted the
world's sexiest woman by E! entertainment television, beating sultry actresses Angelina Jolie and Scarlett
Johansson for the honor.
Czech Kurkova, ranked by Forbes magazine as one of the world's highest paid models, was dubbed by E! as "she
of the mysterious belly button" due to media speculation about what appears to be an unusually
smooth navel.
Second place also went to a supermodel, Israeli Bar Rafaeli, who has been linked to actor Leonardo
DiCaprio, while Jolie, who recently gave birth to twins, was in third place.
"Far from being a US-centric list, you'll find a face, and body, from six continents," E! said in a
statement.

ReaLasting Cotton
Intimate apparel and underwear maker Delta Galil has
launched a new fabric technology which it says helps cotton fabrics last longer.
'ReaLasting Cotton' can be washed multiple times and still look as good as new, the company claims, which is
a big benefit for underwear and hosiery products that are laundered more frequently than any other clothing.
"Because of our advanced, unique and exclusive finishing technologies, ReaLasting Cotton extends the
fresh look of cotton, allowing for longer wear and use," says Esti Maoz, chief marketing officer of Delta
Galil.
The company also says the technology will enable retailers and brands to give more value to their
customers by selling longer-lasting apparel options,
and also helps the environment by reducing the need for frequent garment replacements.
ReaLasting Cotton will appear in Delta Galil collections starting in spring 2009.
Bras for Men
Who said bras are only for women? A Japanese online lingerie retailer is selling bras for cross-dressing men and they've quickly become one of its most popular items.
Since launching a couple of weeks ago on Rakuten, a major Japanese web shopping mall, the Wishroom shop has sold over 300 men's bras for 2,800
 yen ($30) each. The shop also stocks men's panties, as well as lingerie for women.
"I like this tight feeling. It feels good," Wishroom representative Masayuki Tsuchiya was reported as saying as he modeled the bra, which can be worn discreetly under men's clothing.
Wishroom Executive Director Akiko Okunomiya said she was surprised at the number of men who were looking for their inner woman.
"I think more and more men are becoming interested in bras. Since we launched the men's bra, we've been getting feedback from customers saying 'wow, we'd been waiting for this for such a long time'," she said.
But the bra, available in black, pink and white, is not an easy sell for all men.
The underwear has stirred a heated debate online with more than 8,000 people debating the merits of men wearing bras in one night on Mixi, Japan's top social network website.
