Anti-Ageing Fabrics
Spanish stretch-fabrics company Dogi has bought US peer Elastic
Fabrics of America (EFA) for US$33m.
The Barcelona-based firm stated the deal will boost revenues by 20% and enable it to complete its strategic plan two years ahead of
schedule.
Under that plan, Dogi has forecast a 50% annual rise in earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and
amortization (EBITDA) by 2008.
EFA is forecasting a $7m profit on revenues of $48m in 2006.
Dogi said EFA’s lead in the US market will boost its global expansion plans.
The acquisition comes after Dogi and EFA signed a joint venture to build a 2m-metre warp knit factory in Sri Lanka to expand their
business in Asia’s fast-growing textiles market.
Separately, Dogi’s communications director Ana Cano said the company’s recently-launched 'anti-ageing' functional fabrics line is
generating strong interest from clients around the world.
Regarding its new venture, Dogi said clients – which include Victoria's Secret and DBA Apparel – are considering
incorporating the materials into their products.
Dogi claims the new line, which is made from aloe-vera 'nanoparticles,' offers hydrating, calming and anti-ageing benefits
to those who wear them.
Dogi’s general manager Sergi Domenech said the line may become a key revenue maker on the back of strong growth forecasts functional
apparel.
Dogi makes stretch-fabrics for top lingerie and underwear

'Garment Girls' Songs
Garment workers in Sri Lanka have launched a collection of songs in a
bid to change attitudes towards what are known as ‘garment girls.’
The collection of 12 songs in CD and cassette format was funded by the Christian World Service of New Zealand and was launched by the
Women’s Centre, an organization campaigning for rights of working women.
"These girls are treated very badly by our society. They are called
all kinds of derogatory names," explained the Coordinator of the
Women’s Centre, Padmini Weerasuriya.
"They are harassed on the roads and preyed upon. But they are the people earning money for this country.
The Women’s Centre has also produced a street drama to generate public support against harassment of women in buses, roads and public
places.
Over 80% of Sri Lanka’s garment industry workforce is made up of women but women’s
organizations say that sexual harassment on the roads and busses are a major obstacle to the freedom of movement of
working women, particularly in Sri Lanka’s free-trade areas.
Although working conditions at factories have improved recently,
verbal and physical harassment, particularly after dark, has become a pressing problem. Women are also in constant danger of being attacked
and robbed for their jewelry or money.
The combination of low status, poor boarding and transport facilities and harassment is now turning people away from garment factory jobs.
"There are an estimated 30,000 vacancies in the industry. The biggest problem is the bad image," said T G Ariyarathne, secretary general of
the Joint Apparel Association Forum, the representative body of the garment industry.

Hanesbrands to Close
Textile Plant
Hanesbrands, the US$4.7bn apparel business spun off from Sara Lee in
September, has announced another production plant closure as it shifts its manufacturing to lower-cost locations.
The company said it will shut down its textile plant in Ponce, Puerto Rico, and move the operations to the Caribbean basin.
The plant, which turns out fabric for use in T-shirts and underwear, will close down by the end of January with the loss of about 500 jobs.
"Moving production from Ponce to the Caribbean basin is necessary to improve
Hanesbrands’ efficiency and competitiveness," said Gerald Evans, Hanesbrands executive VP and chief global supply chain
officer.
Evans added: "We regret the loss of jobs for our employees in Ponce.
We have a good work force in Ponce, but this move is an economic necessity for our
organization overall in today’s competitive global market and does not reflect the quality and dedication of the Ponce
workforce."
Hanesbrands expects to take a charge of about $18m related to the latest closure. About half of this will be non-cash.
The company said recently it plans to move supply-chain operations to lower-cost places within the Western Hemisphere, and eventually
balance out operations between the West and Asia.
Before the latest announcement, the company had already said it would shut three production plants – two in the US and one in Mexico – and
close and consolidate US distribution centers.
It then announced in October it will buy a sewing plant in Thailand, which will be its first owned manufacturing facility in Asia.
Third-quarter earnings at the firm were down 39.1%, hit by the cost of separating from Sara Lee in September, while sales were hit by the
exit from low-margin product lines and lower sales of sheer hosiery.
Despite numerous challenges including strong sector rivalry and
continuing retail consolidation, CEO Richard Noll has assured
analysts the company is making good inroads in executing growth
strategies and that Hanesbrands will build its "largest, strongest
brands in core categories by driving innovation in key items."

$20
On their wedding night the young bride approached her new husband
and asked for $20.00 for their first lovemaking encounter. In his highly aroused state, her husband readily agreed.
This scenario was repeated each time they made love, for more than 30 years, with him thinking that it was a cute way for her to afford new
clothes and other incidentals that she needed.
Arriving home around noon one day, she was surprised to find her husband in a very drunken state. During the next few minutes, he explained that his employer was going through a process of corporate downsizing, and he had been let go. It was unlikely that, at the age of 59, he'd be able to find another position that paid anywhere near what he'd been earning and, therefore, they were financially ruined.
Calmly, his wife handed him a bank book which showed more than 30 years of steady deposits and interest totaling nearly $1 million. Then she showed him certificates of deposits issued by the bank which were worth over $2 million, and informed him that they were one of the largest depositors in the bank.
She explained that for the more than three decades she had "charged" him for sex, these holdings had multiplied and these were the results of her savings and investments.
Faced with evidence of cash and investments worth over $3 million, her husband was so astounded he could barely speak, but finally he found his voice and blurted out, "If I'd had any idea what you were doing, I would have given you all my business!"
That's when she shot him.

Silver Helps to Fight Body
Odor
A T-shirt that that dramatically reduces the impact of body
odors with the aid of nanotechnology has been produced by the Thai company United Textile Mills (UTM).
Silver nanoparticles are embedded in the fabric of the garment and are so small that they allow silver atoms to penetrate the fabric and attach strongly to the
fibers, whereupon they suppress the ability of microbial cells to transfer
odors.
The nano silver particles are created by producing silver atoms with a size of less than 100
nanometers.
UTM calculates that the garment stops bacterial growth by up to 90% and lasts for up to 50 wash cycles before its effects begin to be reduced.
Meanwhile, other companies, such as China-based Beijing Kuailu Knitting Company, are developing socks embedded with nano silver that, working on the same scientific principles, inhibits the growth of fungi that cause foot
odors, Athlete’s Foot, toe nail infections and heel cracks.
Sports socks are also being tested which contain molecular-scale sponges that absorb the hydrocarbons responsible for body
odor that are released quickly and in great quantities during vigorous exercise.
