Pyramid Companies, Syracuse, NY. is making a $1.3 billion bet on the future. The operator of 19 shopping centers in NY and MA, announced this week plans to develop a 5,000,000 sq. ft.retail and entertainment destination in Syracuse, N.Y. The "DestiNY USA" project is being touted as "the largest attraction of its kind anywhere in the nation." It will feature a five-story atrium housing a 90,000-square-foot saltwater aquarium, a 500,000-square-foot multi-field indoor sport and recreation complex, a 65-acre glass-enclosed park and a 1,500-foot long replica of the Erie Canal.
Pyramid will develop the project around its existing Carousel Center, a 1.6 million sq. ft. mall positioned on an 800-acre complex. DestiNY will be a mix of shopping, entertainment, recreation, dining and hospitality. Pyramid's founder and current Sr. managing partner, Robert Congel, stated that the project will "feature more than 400 world-class retailers, restaurants and recreational activities and over 2,000 hotel rooms." Over 40 million visitors are expected annually.  Construction will begin in spring 2002.

ABC Getting Heat for Risque Special
NEW YORK  - ABC says critics of its racy Victoria's Secret fashion special should see what hit the cutting-room floor.
The network, which is taking heat for devoting a prime-time hour to supermodels strutting in underwear, said it edited out camera shots that showed more skin.
``There has certainly been racier things on television than this,'' said Andrea Wong, the ABC executive in charge of alternative programming.
Groups like the National Organization for Women (news - web sites) and the Parents Television Council criticized ABC for airing the special, and a Federal Communications Commission (news -web sites) member asked for an investigation into whether it violated indecency regulations.

The US clothing giant Levi Strauss won a landmark ruling
from the European Court of Justice yesterday ensuring its
right to crush the import of denims from the United States
and other countries outside the EU.
Levi Strauss called the sweeping ruling a victory that
preserved quality and branding. But consumer groups and
British supermarket group Tesco Plc, which had imported
Levis jeans from the United States and sold them at
discount prices, expressed shock and sharp disappointment
and pledged to fight on.
The decision will have a broad impact on consumers across
Europe. It bars retailers from importing trademarked goods
from outside the European Economic Area - the EU, Norway,
Iceland and Liechtenstein - and selling them below
authorized prices without a green light from the trademark
holder.

A model wearing wings is suspended in the air over other wing-clad models on the runway at the finale of the Victoria's Secret fashion show in New York.  The Victoria's Secret fashion show on November 13 not only drove the crowds in Bryant Park wild, it also drove hordes of inquiring minds to the lingerie purveyor's website.
Those not lucky enough to be there in person, or catch the ABC telecast of the event two days later, apparently logged on that week for a glimpse of thong-clad supermodels that included Gisele and Tyra Banks.
According to Internet audience measurement service Nielsen/NetRatings, the traffic on victoriassecret.com doubled for the week ending November 18. Unique visitors climbed to 423,000,
compared with only 212,000 the previous week.

Fruit of the Loom - Hathaway
One of the best known names in apparel, Fruit of the Loom has been struggling with heavy debt and cut-throat competition, filing for bankruptcy protection two years ago. Now, the company is expected to emerge from bankruptcy as part of Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway empire. The group sewed up a deal to acquire the underwear maker for $835 million in early November. When the planned acquisition is
completed next year, Fruit of the Loom is expected to halt a long-running price war that's hurt itself and the rest of the industry.

Tyra Banks graces the runway during Victoria's Secret Fashion Show Tuesday, Nov. 13, 2001, at New York's Bryant Park. ABC television aired $5 million holiday-themed production last Thursday, the first-ever network broadcast of this annual event.
The network, which is taking heat for devoting a prime-time hour to supermodels strutting in underwear, said it edited out camera shots that showed more skin.
