Hanesbrands to Close Centers
Hanesbrands Inc is to close two distribution centers in Pennsylvania early next year, with the loss of 155 jobs, according to local media reports.
The T-shirt and underwear maker, whose brands include Champion, Wonderbra, Playtex and Bali, will close its Tidewood and Hometown centers by the first quarter of 2009, and shift the work to other facilities.
The move is part of efforts to be more competitive by operating fewer, but larger, distribution centers.
Hanesbrands said it will give workers severance benefits and help them find new jobs.

  Lingerie Americas and CURVENY
             Buyers and Manufacturers
weigh in on the state of the shows
                            by Luis Paredes
In the latest show of strength between Lingerie Americas and CURVENY, location may have tipped the scales in favor of one show – at least for now.
Appearances make a big impression and the look and feel of CURVENY at Jacob Javits helped erase the memory of the show’s last location that was plagued by a maze of booths. In fact, this last edition boosted their image in the eyes of some buyers and manufacturers.
“The difference betweens Curve and Lingerie Americas is that there's an electricity in the air in the air and there's more excitement and, of course, our sales are wonderful," said Felicia Loc, of Pfiff Lingerie. Pfiff did note that they had one booth in each show this year. Loc said that it was important for them to also have a presence at Lingerie Americas as well.
The majority of the buyers interviewed at CURVENY said that they loved the location of the show at Jacob Javits.
“It’s bright, open and inviting,” said Canville Mason, rep for Holiday Village. “There’s even a view of the river!”
Back at the Altman Building, which has become synonymous with Lingerie Americas for some long-time attendees, the same venue might have hurt that show’s image.
For the past few editions, Lingerie Americas has taken up more and more floors. Long-time visitors admitted during the interview that they were shocked to see only one floor at this edition.
However, some buyers like Frances L. Crespo of the Full Cup, a long time attendee of Lingerie Americas said that despite not having all the floors filled up, that they are always impressed with Lingerie Americas - especially this last show- and will come back for future editions.
Of course, this doesn’t mean CURVENY wasn’t without its faults according to visitors. Some were disappointed at having the fashion show held during the event. They felt it severed the show in half with booths at the other end of the fashion show paying with a slow down in visitors.
“A poor logistical choice,” said a buyer.
The lack of overwhelming traffic was the common thread connecting a majority of manufacturer’s complaints at both Lingerie Americas and CURVENY.
For buyers, they were disappointed at having to travel to two different shows and not seeing a huge number of booths at either venue.
But buyers at both shows agreed that they found a variety of new products not seen at previous editions. That, they felt, made their trips worth their time.
The majority of attendees, buyers and manufacturers did well, enjoyed the shows and are coming back for the Vegas editions. One buyer did warn, “This can’t go on forever. We all hope these two shows kiss and make up. Having two shows at the same time in two different cities – all this does is split up the buyers from exhibitors. It isn’t good for either of them or this Industry.”
