UK's Same-Store July Retail
Sales Up 3.4%
UK retail sales rose 3.4% on a same-store basis during July, according to a
report by the BRC.
The increase compared with the 1.9% fall last year following the London
tube bombings.
The three-month trend rate of growth fell to 3.1% from 4.1% in June for
same-store sales, and to 5.6% from 6.8% for total sales, reflecting the
continued growth of retail space.
Exceptionally hot weather hit footfall, but clothing did well in clearance
sales.
Although shoppers are eager to take advantage of clearances, they are still
wary of buying bigger things, the BRC said.
Director general Kevin Hawkins said: "A lot of this growth, against a weak
comparative a year ago, was driven by the food sector, helped by the
weather, and heavy discounting across many product categories.

Ethical Clothing Gaining
Interest in the UK
More than half of Britain's consumers would rather buy ethically produced clothing, according to the latest research from market information company TNS Worldpanel Fashion. 53% would buy ethical if it didn't cost more, the research found. 76% felt an end to child
labor and sweatshops was a very important driver of ethical production, closely followed by offering producers a fair price 60% and damage caused to the environment 50%.
TNS research manager Brenda Gobine said it was obvious people were more worried about workers being treated fairly than about elements such as organic manufacturing.
Gobine said "only time will tell" if the ethical clothing trend will continue.
But the report also revealed that 58% of under-25s didn't care how clothes were produced – nearly twice the percentage of those aged over 55.
Price could be a factor for younger generations, Gobine said, but added that if more younger stores sold ethical clothes, more younger people would be likely to buy them.
59% of women felt ethical production of clothes was important to them, and 41% of men thought the same.
Meanwhile, 27% of people would pay more for ethically produced clothing but 53% admitted they would choose ethical if they didn't have to pay more.
Marks & Spencer (M&S) was rated the most ethical retailer by consumers, scoring 3.27 on a scale of 1 – 5. Value fashion retailers were given the lowest score, indicating a link in consumers’ minds between price, quality and ethical responsibility, TNS said.
Gobine suggested shoppers would feel ethical clothing was "safe" if it could be bought at more quality retailers such as M&S.

Fashion to Future
The project is aimed at boosting textile, apparel and shoe innovation
Euro-Mediterranean Fashion City, an association of seven trade federations
from France, Italy, Lebanon, Morocco and Tunisia and the city of
Marseilles' Chamber of Commerce, has unveiled a project – 'Fashion to
Future' - which aims at reinforcing cooperation between European and
Mediterranean countries in the area.
The project is designed to boost innovation in textile, apparel and shoes
as well as promoting technology transfer towards small- to medium-sized
firms in the sector.
A database will be put in place in order to facilitate strategic decisions
in firms and the project will also make a provision for the creation of
work groups and the organization of a number of public events.
The Fashion to Future project is being coordinated by Italy's Institute for
Industrial Promotion, with a total of 38 partner organizations from 19
countries lending their support.

Klum Releases "The Body"
The stunning supermodel, who is currently pregnant with her third child, recently signed a deal with lingerie giant Victoria's Secret to release her own line of underwear.
Klum has revealed the first bra to be released by her and the company is called The Body in
honor of the nickname she got when she first started to model for them.
She revealed to TV program The Early Show: "Victoria's Secret have a new bra and they've called it 'The Body,' which was one of my nicknames that I started having when I started work with Victoria's Secret, which was a huge
honor for me," "Now it's a big honor having a bra named after my nickname that people know in the business, 'The Body'."
Klum, who is married to pop star Seal, has also filmed a TV advert for the new bra - which comes in eight different
colors and has no seams or stitches.
Despite shooting the promo while pregnant, the German catwalk queen managed to hide her fledgling bump with clever use of a prop.
She explained: "I had a chair to work with that I could hide behind a little bit. It all worked out fine. It was a lot of fun doing the ad because I got to tell my story a little bit, you know, how people gave me the nickname and everything, it was a lot of fun."

Vanity Fair Names Kate
Moss as Best Dressed
Glamour world's second favorite bad girl Kate Moss leads fashion magazine Vanity Fair's Best Dressed Hall of Fame. The 32-year-old model, who sparked off a controversy after being caught on camera snorting cocaine, appears nude on the cover of the September edition of the magazine in a Marlene Dietrich look complete with a fur hat, white gloves and leather boots.
This year's Best Dressed Hall of Fame has other notables like Queen Rania of Jordan, Oprah Winfrey, David Beckham, George Clooney, Renee Zellwegger, Gwen Stefani, Condoleezza Rice, journalist Anderson Cooper, filmmaker Sofia Coppola, and Prince William, among others. Former Spice Girl Victoria Beckham, known for her sharp dressing, is surprisingly absent from the list. “Kate Moss captured the highest number of votes in the women's
category. Her closest contender, Her Majesty Queen Rania of Jordan, pulled in just slightly more than half of Moss' massive tally,” said Amy Fine Collins, a spokesperson for Vanity Fair.
The controversy that broke out last year and Moss' subsequent public apology, coupled with a rehab stint and a break-up with Babyshambles doper Pete Doherty, seem to have done her good after a brief crisis. After the pictures appeared in a tabloid, Burberry turned its back on the supermodel, as did H&M, Rimmel and Chanel. However, after her public apology and subsequent attempts to change her ways, the lifestyle giants accepted her back into their fold. Moss signed major deals with the likes of Versace, Calvin Klein, Stella McCartney, and Bulgari, among others, after the episode, in the process doubling her earnings.
According to Vanity Fair fashion and style director Michael Roberts, Moss' appeal lies in her individuality and keen sense of what looks good. “Kate has a natural talent for putting fresh looks together that are inspirational for other modern girls to follow. And it doesn't hurt that she looks uncannily beautiful even after a hard night out,” Roberts said. He added that the supermodel was “the most followed style icon of our time”. “She looks ravishing whether she's going to the grocery store or walking the red carpet,” Roberts said.
