Victoria's Secret Fashion
        Show Returns
After leaving its lingerie tucked away last year, Victoria's Secret Fashion Show is coming back.
The show is returning to the runway, CBS announced.
CBS aired the show in 2002 and 2003 before deciding to pull it last year in the wake of the Jackson controversy, when the Federal Communications Commission cracked down on all things racy, raunchy and risqué.
But the decision was more a way for Columbus-based Limited Brands, the operator of Victoria's Secret, to re-evaluate its promotion of its products.
The hour-long show features supermodels sporting the company's latest lingerie. It also typically incorporates singers, skits and an orchestra.
CBS said it is the most-watched fashion show with more than 12 million viewers.
The show was on ABC in 2001 and its first online show in 1999 made Internet history when 1.5 million visitors tried to log on and brought down the site within 20 minutes.
Limited Brands, with $9.4 billion in sales last year, canceled plans for the 2004 show after CBS parent Viacom Inc. came under attack for the halftime show at the Super Bowl.

Gap Reports Low Sales
Gap Inc has reported static net sales of $1.04 billion for the four-week period ended July 30, 2005, and a 4% fall in same-store sales compared to a 5% drop last year.
Decreases were seen within the core Gap chain and the Old Navy chain – 8% and 5% respectively.
Same-store sales within the up market Banana Republic division, however, leapt 7%, and international division same-store sales rose 4%.
The company said that the “disappointing” sales figures came after the company was forced to engage in mass promotional activity to clear summer lines.
Gap senior vice president, Sabrina Simmons, said: "July was a transitional month as our brands continued to clear summer merchandise”.
Second-quarter same-store sales dropped 3%, compared to static same-store sales last year.

China Has Excess Supply
         of Textiles
China has excess supplies of approximately 86.9% of its textiles, according to a Ministry of Commerce.
It was suggested that the problem would worsen, considering that investment during the first five months of 2005 leapt 39.7%.
The country is currently fighting measures by the EU and the US to restrict its textiles and clothing exports following the end of the trade quota system at the start of 2005.

         Intimate London: The
   Industry’s #1 UK Trade
           Exhibition

31st July – 2nd August 2005, enjoyed its most successful show to date. Although numbers were down from the previous year, exhibitors were delighted with the quality of buyers they did see, both from departments and independents.
Martyn Wilkinson of Maryan Beachwear Group commented: “We have been extremely busy on all three days of the show, my only complaint, if I was to have one, was we were too busy at times. We have seen all the major department stores and Independents from both the North and the South, the show has reached beyond my expectations, we have seen everyone we hoped to see, plus more”.
Diarmuid Foghlu Managing Director of Shirley of Hollywood echoed these comments: “The show has been excellent for us. We have seen no time waster’s only serious buyers. Staging our own catwalk show has given our brand a larger presence at the event and in the long term will hopefully further our credibility as a brand. I am very pleased with the show itself and the buyers we have seen, and I am looking forward to the next event”.
Pauline Lewis of Alba Associates said: “The quality of buyers has been outstanding, and the only people that seem to be missing are the time wasters. We have had an excellent response to our collections from both boutique type stores and the larger independents”
Patricia Ratut of Manuel Canovas: “I am very pleased with the level of  buyers we have seen. We have been so busy on all three days of the show, and if anything I would like it to be a four day event. The new venue is excellent and the organization and promotion of the event has been superb”
Eugenia Bonotto of Ahead Fashion: “The show has been wonderful, and has enabled me to branch out into department stores. The organization has been fantastic and the fashion show just fabulous, the styling was perfect”
New brands were also excited and enthusiastic in their praise for the event Iza Barden from Sukisu: “My Honey Moon Bikini has had an amazing response from Independents. I have made many new contacts and am very happy to have been apart of this event”.
David Finnlayson agent for Chloe, Frankly Darling, Kalyani, Only Hearts and Roberto Cavalli added: “The show has been brilliant, we have been steady on all three days of the event, and have made several new accounts with both departments and independents. The level of buyers has been outstanding, and we are delighted at the quality of orders placed”.
Buyers that attended the show were pleased with the new venue and were impressed with the variety of brands on show:
Maureen Henderson Owner The Cheshire Lady: “Everything about the show was just wonderful. The new venue created the perfect atmosphere for me to do a lot of buying; it was comfortable, welcoming and stress free with an excellent variety of brands. The whole organization was just excellent even small details like the shuttle bus from my hotel to the venue, I had a wonderful time”.
Michelle Etherington Owner of Top Drawers: “Intimate London is the only place I can view so many resources under one roof. I can gain an overview of the market, and I use this show to place all my swimwear orders”.
Nicky Clayton Head Buyer at Rigby and Peller commented: “Brand representation at the show was superb. The fashion show was really inspirational; it gave a fantastic representation of key themes for next season”.
Robert Thomas Organizer added: “We were delighted with the excellent turnout despite the current situation in London and the constant disruption to the transport system. Our exhibitors and visitors are to be congratulated on their business approach in this difficult time”.

Istanbul Gives Away Free
           Swimsuits
Turkey is taking its campaign to join the European Union to the beaches of Istanbul.
The city is giving away free swimsuits to deter bathers from jumping into the sea in their underwear. About 2,000 were distributed last weekend and stalls were also set up to sell them for $2 apiece. A pair of shorts sells for $10 at local supermarkets.
Wearing underwear is ``unhealthy and creates very ugly scenes at our beaches,'' ``There's a proper way to go into the sea. You don't do it in underwear.
16-year-old young man isn't changing his habits or his clothes. ``Underwear, swimsuit, what difference does it make?'' he said, in white briefs as he prepared to swim in the Bosporus Sea in 34 degree Celsius heat. ``You still get wet and cool down.''

Freshpair's Campaign for
        Underwear Day
We have Mothers Day, Fathers Day, Valentines Day, Teachers Day and Nurses Day, but how about Underwear Day?
Since 2003, Freshpair, a leading Internet retailer of intimate apparel, has been campaigning for Aug 10 to be declared National Underwear Day.
On Wednesday, August 10, in the heat of Manhattan summer, ambassadors of Freshpair were right in the middle of Times Square, catching unsuspecting yet pleasantly surprised tourists and New Yorkers in nothing but their underwear, trying to get their support.
They had curtained rings for anyone interested to go in and change into a new pair of underwear for free.
There were lots of takers from teenagers to grandfathers and great-grandmothers who changed into a fresh pair of underwear to the cheers of spectators and rolling cameras.

Why I Love Grandmas
Here's a quote from a government employee who witnessed a recent interaction between an elderly woman and an antiwar protester in a Metro station in DC:
"There were protesters on the train platform handing out pamphlets on the evils of America. I politely declined to take one. An elderly woman was behind me getting off the escalator and a young (20ish) female protester offered her a pamphlet, which she politely declined. The young protester put her hand on the old woman's shoulder as a gesture of friendship and in a very soft voice said, "Ma'am, don't you care about the children of Iraq?"
The old woman looked up at her and said, "Honey, my first husband died in France during World War II, my second husband died in Korea so you could have the right to stand here and bad mouth our country. If you touch me again. I'll stick this umbrella up your butt and open it."
