A New Breed of Sex Shops, but the Same Fight
Milford, Conn., — In this little enclave of suburban idyll, the town green has tributes to veterans of wars past and yellow ribbons tied around old oak trees to honor those dressed in camouflage who are still far away. There are ice cream shops and hardware stores, beauty parlors and antiques dealers. Church steeples dot the skyline.
And then, on the outskirts of the city, there is the pornography.
Along a road near a Hooters restaurant, nearly a half-dozen sex shops await customers. Vinny's Adult Movies has tinted windows, and a place called Video Pleasures occupies a dilapidated two-story house. Another pornography store sits near Tony's Pizza.
But the store that seems to have cemented this tranquil community's reputation as the suburban symbol of smut in southern Connecticut is the Penthouse Boutique, which opened last week amid protests.
Unlike the older sex shops, which are dark and dingy, the Penthouse store is big and brash and brightly lighted. Offering a ladies' night and marketing itself as a fun place for happy couples to shop, the store is part of a trend that has been spreading in suburbs from Louisville to Los Angeles in an attempt to take the industry out of the shadows and make it mainstream.

US textile manufacturers, complaining of a flood of illegally subsidized Chinese imports, filed petitions last month demanding that Washington impose curbs on Chinese knit fabrics, gloves, dressing gowns and bras.
"The orderly development of trade in the US textile and apparel market is not merely threatened; it is under unprecedented attack," said Allen Grant, chief executive
of textile group Glen Raven Inc.
A massive trade gap and a weak yuan are sparking fears of a destabilizing US-China trade war, threatening a new spirit of cooperation between the White House and Beijing.
While Chinese and US political interests have coincided in recent years, especially since the September 11 terror attacks, diverging economic paths could spell trouble.
The yuan was 40 percent undervalued,"and we think that that really is a problem."
Major East Asian currencies had deliberately been kept at low values and were responsible for as much as 100 billion dollars of the annual US trade gap, he said.
The US trade deficit with China bulged 50 percent in three years, to 103 billion dollars -- about a quarter of the total US deficit -- in 2002. So far in 2003, it is up another 27 percent from last year.

Lewd Photos Found In Women's Lingerie Boxes
Women looking for lingerie at a New Jersey store got more than they bargained for after a man stuffed photographs of his genitalia into the packages.
Police in Rochelle Park found nine of the x-rated photographs in bra and brief boxes after being called to the Target store following the discovery of a picture in a child's purse bought there.
Officers later used CCTV pictures to find the suspect and have now charged a local 33-year-old unemployed man with two counts of lewdness.

Fibre And Yarn Show To Launch Next Year
A new opportunity for the international fibre and yarn industry to showcase its latest collections in China is being presented next spring with the first Yarn Expo - China International Trade Fair for Fibres and Yarns.
The event will take place from 31 March - 2 April at the Beijing National Agricultural Exhibition Centre and is scheduled as one of four shows that will make up the inaugural 'Beijing Textile Arena.' Other events include Intertextile Beijing (apparel fabrics & accessories); CHIC (garments and fashion accessories); and a Knitting Fair (knitted garments).
Yarn Expo is expected to attract thousands of textile manufacturers and fashion industry professionals from north and north-eastern China.
"Foreign manufacturers can find huge opportunities in the Chinese market, where the demand for imported textile products far outstrips domestic supply. With its massive volume of textile and garment production, China is now one of the biggest importers of fibres, yarns and fabrics from around the world," says Katy Lam, Director of Trade Fairs for Messe Frankfurt in Hong Kong.
"The Yarn Expo will cater to the entire fibre and yarn industry, producers of yarns for apparel textiles, home textiles, upholstery and interiors will all be exhibiting at the show."

Dear Andy: I am a foundation garment supplier and have been in the industry for over 20 years.
I have successfully developed a new textile pad to replace the old sponge molding currently used in our industry. The new pad has the following properties.
1. Full textile, never turns yellow.
2. Super soft and stretchable. Can come thicker for large size bra molding application.
3. Surface feel and different knitting can be changed for additional application, such as swimwear top cup padding.
I need to launch European sales campagne but don't know how to start. Can you help? Best regards, Tom Liou
