Venus Is Naked Once More
ROME - After being covered up for centuries in a chaste, striped robe, a Florentine Renaissance Venus has regained her naked splendor.
``Venere e Amore'' (Venus and Love), a painting from the mid-1500s by Michele di Ridolfo di
Ghirlandaio, was unveiled in all its glory by Italy's Arts Council Thursday after a long and complex restoration to undress the love goddess.
The reclining naked Venus was covered up in an orange and white striped dress by an anonymous painter in the early 1800s at the start of a period of restoration characterized by ''prudish rules of decorum for art,'' Angela Negro from the arts council told a news conference.
Ghirlandaio's Venus was based on a drawing by Michelangelo and shows Venus lying back in a lascivious pose, kissing an image of cupid.
Wrapped around her voluptuous body, the cupid figure does not notice Venus is stealing his arrows-- a moralistic reference to the fleeting nature of love that characterized works of Mannerist artists such as
Ghirlandaio.
The painted clothing was removed using delicate solvents similar to those used to restore and uncover some of the nudes in Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel in the Vatican (news - web sites).
The painting is now on display in the Colonna gallery in central Rome.

YSL's Latest Racy Ad
After Tom Ford came under fire for the YSL Opium campaign with a nude Sophie Dahl clutching her breast, word was that his new ad for the Paris fragrance would feature newcomer Russian model Anna Eirikh fully clothed. Well, clothed she is - in an unbuttoned black coat and see-through pants, providing a full frontal view of her impeccable body. Shot by Mario Sorrenti,
the ad has Eirikh, 20, pulling back her hair in front of a mirror, with two partially-dressed youngsters enjoying the view. Though Ford says provocative images are part of YSL's tradition, it remains to be seen if audiences will get his taste. British advertising authorities banned his Opium campaign after it received letters of complaint from the public.

Brazil's Erotic Goods Sector Booms
SAO PAULO, Brazil (AP) - Chocolates in erotic shapes, massage oils, lingerie and a whole range of gadgets designed to
titillate even the tiredest of sex lives. Whatever your taste, you'll find it at Sao Paulo's Erotika Fair.
At the fifth edition of the annual event, which opened Friday at the city's Mart Center, organizers say the sector is booming
and that more women are attending, showing Brazilians' attitudes to sex are changing.
According to fair organizer Evaldo Shiroma, the erotic goods sector is worth $350 million a year in Brazil and is growing by
20-30 percent a year.
Some 55,000 people are expected to visit the four-day show and spend about $1 million, according to local Folha news
agency.
``Today, there are about 600 sex shops in Brazil, but there is a large number of people interested in opening franchises'' of the better known brands, Shiroma was quoted as saying by Estado news agency.
The fair's most impressive statistic, organizers say, is the increase in the number of female visitors. About 70 percent of the
visitors to the first edition were men, today about half are women. The number of senior visitors has also increased.
``Women buy more erotic goods because they are less inhibited,'' said fair director Ana Paula Caseiro. ``And during marital
crises, she is the creative one. ... The men are normally afraid of what she will think of him if he goes to a sex shop.''
In Brazil's traditionally macho society, women are rarely treated as sexual equals. In Rio's world-famous Carnival this year,
one of the biggest hits was a dance song called ``slap on the face'' in which men deliver fake slaps to their partners.

after approaching the company with the idea for her own lingerie line.
Holeproof says the 24-piece range, for fashion-conscious 20 to 35-year-olds, is functional and fun.
But the key word is sexy. The collection ranges from wispy
next-to-nothings to the slightly conservative.
The more demure Starburst hipster boy-leg pant, for example would
have been perfect for the girl next door Charlene, the Neighbours character that made Minogue a household name.
For the naughtier modern Minogue, who appears in various states of
undress in her film clips, look no further than the Lucky Knickers, which untie at the side.
